Come one, come all

@multiessence / multiessence.tumblr.com

I am an essence of many sorts. I am a Disney and DreamWorks Animation fan, particularly How To Train Your Dragon, Rise of the Guardians, even movies like Tangled and the short, Paperman. I may reblog anything that appeals to me and my values.

So I decided to hop back on Tumblr for this. I’ve been following @bonkalore for years now and I remember her monster Jughead story which is from the Archie comics. As it turns out, Sabrina the Teenage Witch is also a part of the universe. Harvey Kinkle is a character from Sabrina that I thought was significant from his relationship with Sabrina but bonka never included him so here’s my interpretation of how he would look in the story. I tried to match the style as best I could.

Also I remember in Sabrina the animated series, Harvey becomes a monster. I like her KaiJug and monster designs so much so my idea is he becomes a monster too. But all I have are some sketces of what he'd look like cuz I just want to get this out already so don't judge me. It's supposed to be hid mid and final form.

This was supposed to be for Halloween but I got busy so happy belated gift, bonka! I hope you like my idea.

in httyd when gobber says “the dragon will always go for the kill” and it shows hiccup at the place where toothless spared him as he goes, “so why didn’t you?”, and later on when hiccup says he should’ve just killed toothless, that it would’ve been better for everyone, astrid asks “the rest of us would’ve done it. so why didn’t you?” and hiccup says that he saw himself in toothless, and that’s why hiccup spared him. so good. incredible. i ate that shit up like a wild rat

Anyone who says THW Toothless’s characterization, or lack thereof, is based in anything we’ve ever been shown prior is kidding themselves. Toothless in httyd 1 and 2 was snarky as hell.

Bonus: What it’s come to.

You know, I hate this. I really do hate this.

In HTTYD2 it was glaringly obvious that Toothless had become more domesticated since we saw him in the first movie. He lost more of his wild, mysterious aura, but cushioned the loss with personality. He was snarky. He was aggravated. He ran around through snow and struggled to fit between rocks. Growled at dragons when they got in his personal bubble and tried to befriend Cloudjumper by using his wing as a hat.

And yes, those moments were silly. They were so silly. But the difference between them was that they still felt natural. It felt like Toothless. Because even after spending the first movie as this mysterious dragon that could have killed Hiccup with one plasma blast, we saw him do this.

And this.

And this.

All very silly moments, yes. But the point is: they had a purpose. It wasn’t just Dreamworks going “Hey, let’s just have him keep his tongue out all the time.” or “Let’s have him jump around and slobber excessively.” They were little sporadic moments of cute dragon antics to show that dragons weren’t always the big, scary murderous beasts they were thought to be. If you got to know them you could witness them acting like cats and bats and dogs. If they really wanted to they could wag their tails, go fetch sticks or learn to smile like you. They’d learn to give you kisses to annoy you or cheer you up and they could bumble around your house on a path of destruction because they don’t know their own size, just like a lap dog. Even a Night Fury was not above this.

But then we look at Toothless in the 3rd movie, and everything falls apart. Eyes always dilated. Scales so shiny that they look like bubble wrap. Tongue constantly out. He won’t stop jumping around. They couldn’t even make him a good alpha. All that characterization? Gone. He’s no longer an interesting creature. He’s no longer a long-feared dragon that will love humans and throw down for them because of said love. He’s just a slobbery oversized dog. Walking slowly towards enemies and licking walls.

This is a really good analysis and I 100% agree with it. I also hate how they changed his design as well; he goes from having subtle markings reminiscent of leopard spots, to his scales being plain black and, as you said, far too shiny. It feels like his design reflects his character - mysterious in the first, tamer in the second, and plastic in the third. Yes, THW Toothless has a plastic personality.  Just like his oh so wild ‘graceful’ and ‘feminine’ girlfriend, how about that?

hey quick question why are all adult cartoons like that

like why is it that adult cartoons could build upon this beautiful format for storytelling used in children’s cartoons to deliver more complex, powerful narratives and include themes with more depth and comedy that adults can relate to, but instead it means “hey here’s an array of every nasty vile bigoted thing u can think of drawn in the most tedious ugly obnoxious art style” like why did we go so wrong..

anyone else remember being like 13 years old and watching that scene in how to train your dragon (2010) where hiccup carefully navigates the maze of lines toothless has drawn between them without breaking or stepping on any of them and with his back to toothless and eyes shut to demonstrate how he’s willing to put total faith in him not to harm him or run away and to show humility and a desire to establish a natural bond of mutual trust instead of the arrogance to try to force toothless to submit to his will and hearing the music crescendo and fade into silence as he finally crosses the last obstacle so that they’re standing mere inches from one another, tension built on years of bad blood between their two races, so immense it’s almost like a physical barrier, separating them, and after what feels like forever toothless presses his nose gently into hiccup’s outstretched palm and it fits perfectly like it was made solely for that specific purpose, and feeling all the hairs on your neck stand up and a stifling sensation that brought actual tears to your eyes rise in your throat as it touched something profound and full of unspeakable yearning inside you

You just want a dragon

Well of course I want a fucking dragon
