Okay this is fascinating because the Greek version of Anthy’s name, Antheia, is another name for Hera (and Zeus’s name is derived from Dios). Zeus and Hera were, of course, siblings as well as husband and wife. Antheia was ALSO sometimes used as an epithet for Aphrodite herself. So in both these tales about Io, we have the Anthy-equivalent goddess jealous of a relative’s love for someone else.

hi i’m a freak for ovid and this episode makes me go absolutely insane so i’m gonna go crazy with the io / nanami thoughts that have been percolating in my brain!! this parallel really really fascinates me. putting it under the cut for length, also because of discussion about rape and incest.

I’ve seen ppl get mad that utena and anthy never actually kiss onscreen throughout the entire show and that the movie is actually rectifying a grave slight by allowing them to kiss so brazenly but I actually think that there is something so much more incisive & trenchant about the only fully exposed onscreen kisses belonging to shiori & ruka (& unnamed stand-in #1) and akio & utena (& tokiko & kanae* &&&). if you dismiss the frame you lose the story
