people are constantly talking about the writing tags being filled up by non writing, which is a completely valid criticism. but i’ve witnessed others go so far as to claim that works of writing under a certain word count don’t belong in the tags, as they “aren’t fics,” but instead are drabble or thirsts or headcanons.
as far as i’m concerned, a fic is any piece of writing that tells a story. you can tell a story in as little as a couple hundred words—there is no minimum word count, no formatting guidelines, no requirements. i say this as someone who consistently struggles to write anything longer than 1500 words. does that make me any less of a writer than someone who only publishes fics with 10k+ words? for a long time, i thought it meant exactly that. but i’ve come to see things differently.
the beauty of fandom is that we’re all here as a hobby. the goal is to build community, to exchange thoughts and ideas, and to create art. why would we discourage others from expressing themselves through their own means? maybe english isn’t someone’s first language, so they struggle to write anything longer than a few paragraphs; maybe someone has a demanding job and can only write little blurbs here and there; maybe someone just doesn’t have the capacity to write anything substantial; does that mean that they shouldn’t share their work or be proud of it?
you don’t have to like the formats in which others choose to express themselves, but you shouldn’t outright dismiss them or invalidate their efforts, either. at the end of the day, we’re all humans trying to cope with the hardships of day-to-day existence. fandom should be more inclusive and understanding.
