helping fanzine authors bring their fanfiction online to the next generation of fans

One of my passions is preserving the history of the fanfiction community. And one of my favorite universities doing this work is Texas A&M University. In addition to the large sci-fi/fantasy collection (the papers of Martha Wells and George RR Martin) they have many slash and gen fanfiction fanzines. Check out this video from 2022 about their Science Fiction and Fantasy Collection

Zinedom Project Update

The project is still alive, this time under the direction & assistance of the OTW Open Doors Team. Open Doors will be looking down the road for volunteers to help with converting and uploading of #fanzine era #fanfiction and #fanart. Stay tuned.

Was the project to add "The Weight Collected" by Leslie Fish to Zinedom ever finished? If so, where can I find it? I came up empty in search.

The fanzine text was converted but then the project stalled because there is a lot of fan art that needs to be extracted from the PDFs, uploaded somewhere and then embedded on AO3. Volunteers willing to take on the project and come up with a way to complete are always welcomed.

Cadet Kirk is stranded while on a survival course and is found by Spock, a cadet also stranded 5 years earlier.

Originally published in 1985 in the print fanzine As I Do Thee #3.

“After the first fic is written in any fandom, traditional themes (cliche fic, tropes, archetypes – whatever you want to call them) quickly follow. It takes no time at all for any fandom to develop its favorite tropes (often the same tropes, no matter what the fandom)... Then there are authors like Vivian Gates, who can take a long-familiar trope and find an entirely different way to look at it. Vivian was a prolific K/S author in the 80s, and she recently consented to have her work posted on ksarchive.com.” (x)

“A delicate and focused story taking place after ST1 when Spock returns to the Enterprise. Spock and Kirk play chess in Kirk's quarters and they start talking on intimate terms about their feelings for each other... Of course they don't finish the chess game. What a wonderful story.” (x)

“Claire de Lune is a Connie Faddis triumph. It's very well written, interesting—and weird. In a nutshell, Spock and McCoy are marooned on a planet where the moonlight does strange thing to any one with telepathic powers. Together McCoy and Spock fight to save Spock's sanity.“ (x)

In the aftermath of Balance of Terror, both Kirk and Spock struggle to accept the violence and the deaths. Kirk prowls the ship, disturbed by the knowledge that Spock might have easily died along with Tomlinson. But Spock has a Vulcan ritual to remember the fallen, and in the dark cocoon of night, he invites Kirk to share it with him.

Originally published in 2001 in the print fanzine Beyond Dreams #3.

“This is a beautifully written story. The whole story is so atmospheric, and really emphasizes that Spock is, after all, an alien, with a different culture and a different way of thinking than humans. The scenes between Spock and Kirk are some of the most loving and erotic I've ever read. This story really stayed with me after I finished it.“ (x)

Unaware of their relationship, a delusional woman from Kirk's past comes aboard the Enterprise.

Originally posted in 1987 the print zine Daring Attempt #9.

“Debbie Cummins has written some wonderful K/S over the years, and this story is one of her best. A Shadow from the Past is very simply written, straightforward in narration and characterization, but it works beautifully. It definitely is an excellent example that an old formula can be very effective. The story does have the feeling of classic hurt/comfort from the 70s with a wonderful 80s K/S twist.“ (x)
