They initially refused to even release the whole series on DVD, waiting 8 years to release S2 Part2. I really doubt they’ll do anything else for us

Yeah, they cancelled the comic series before it really had a chance to develop much of what Greg Weisman wanted to do and they took forever releasing the second half of the second season citing “poor sales” as the reason they were dropping it like it was hot.

Gargoyles really is one of those series with very niche appeal, though. It’s fantastic and the fans ABSOLUTELY love it, but it doesn’t have that lowest common denominator appeal that nets the huge fanbases (of predominantly 7-12 year old boys) they’re angling for. It was a relatively serious long-running serial full of references to classic literature and mythology and a lot of heavy themes. Which means it’s amazing it ever had a chance to get on TV in the first place. (Greg Weisman says after years of pitching finally they got caught in the perfect storm of success from Batman the Animated Series and Gummi Bears - they wanted gritty inner city action drama with whimsical fantasy creatures)

The cynical part of me wants to say they probably got scared off because it’s most adamant fans tend to be bookish teenage girls, and that’s a market they’re just terrified of touching. Like, if something is supposed to be for boys they try to go full-tilt all-boys-cartoon-all-the time and unfortunately dumb things down with tired old tropes to firmly cement a “for boys” stamp on it so marketing can focus on putting a bunch of space armour action figure variants on the shelves knowing that their demographic is clear and concrete. If they’re trying to make a show for 12 year old girls they push the 100% barbiefied pink aisle friendly angle so hard, it has to just be quintessentially girly. So if  girls have taken to something that’s kinda dark and and serious with an action slant to it and thematic undertones dealing with racism, sexism, violence and sexuality (albeit in a family friendly squeaky clean way that wouldn’t be out of place in a “boy’s” action series like Batman) they have no idea what to do with it. They’ll sell things like Lizzie McGuire and Hannah Montana to teenage girls. The Shakesperian techno-future adventures of a cool lady cop and her divorcee single-dad monster boyfriend is terrifying if your whole strategy of marketing to a demographic revolves around fashion, celebrity, and the colour pink.

Which of course is not to say boys didn’t like Gargoyles, just a trend I’ve noticed that the people who most often tend to be adamant Gargoyles fans and point to the series as a life-changing formative part of their childhoods are women who were into fantasy and mythology and felt excluded by the really rigid lines drawn in the sand about what constituted “boys” shows and “girls” shows.

I found this to be relevant to our interests.
