I walk into my quarters on the station Deep Space 9, confident that my schemes and plots have been pulled off successfully. My chair gets orange and wobbly and goops slowly into the shape of Constable Odo who has my ass dead to rights. I start stimming and bouncing on the spot because despite the near inevitability that I'm going to be sentenced to hard labour on a distant penal colony planet I've kinda always wanted to see him do that

Crime on DS9 works by gameshow rules and if you can guess which object in your room is actually Odo he can't legally arrest you

Ghezal Chagak is a professional baker born and raised on Cardassia Prime. After the bombardment of her homeworld destroys her workplace along with the economy, she moves to Deep Space 9 to open a new little bakery of her own and send money back to her family. The mix of cultures and flavor preferences on the station (how could she have known shellfish and fresh fruit breakfast pastries wouldn’t take off?) are daunting at first, along with lingering anti-Cardassian sentiment among the locals, but she’s determined to make things work.

The fact that deep space nine is a shopping mall and gas station is SO charming to me

Not to be extremely American but it’s one of those massive truck stops you find along the interstate that’s always open and has a place to do your laundry and shower and play video poker and buy audiobooks and 30 different kinds of jerky and a new seat cushion for your rig because it’s been bothering you for a while and there are other travelers shooting the shit around the coffee machines just to get some social time in before the road’s calling you back because you aren’t supposed to stay forever. You pick up a hand pie and a fidget spinner and maybe a new pair of sunglasses because god only knows where the your old ones are in the cab, consider buying a carton of cigarettes or that dang horrible nicotine gum and somehow when you roll back through 6 or 8 months later the folks at the inset all-night greasy spoon greet you and everybody else like you’re a regular just there the other day.
