Another reason why there are so many tapes of people being racist/sexist, anti-gay, and otherwise terrible people:

It’s not just that Donald Trump has empowered the worst instincts in many people … although he certainly has.

It’s also because everyone has a video camera with them everyone they go, all the time.

I mean, you know there’s nothing new about Americans being cruel to one another, right? It’s not like 1955 was a land of sunshine and honey for women, racial and ethnic minorities, and people with non-“conventional” sexual orientations. (As that term is generally understood.)

Much the same is true of all those horrible “cops being abusive” videos: it is a sad fact that such behavior is not new. It’s just finally being recorded.

My hope is that in 20 years we’ll have adapted to the fact that we cannot remain anonymous and be shitheads. But we’ve been shitheads for, well, ever. It’s gonna take a big change to get to a better place.
