Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984) dir. Hayao Miyazaki
here’s my (non-exhaustive) woman chart. rate my taste in fictional women
That post about death note being "everyone's first anime" (untrue statement) made me curious and now I want to gather data for science
Can you reblog this and tell me where are you from and what was your starter anime?
Inspired by this poll
If you guys were on here at 11 years old what would you be posting about
One of my favorites, and I worked very hard on it. I never liked drawing standard heroine pictures of Nausicaä looking cheerful. I couldn't draw her disconnected from the story. Nausicaä looking out of the picture and smiling just seemed wrong to me. When she's alone, I always imagined her looking very unapproachable. Not because she was intimidating, but because of a quiet isolation, like she wasn't part of her surroundings at all.
– Hayao Miyazaki.

zenosanalytic replied to your post:wtf does making Studio Ghibli stronger even mean
The Ghibli film of my youth was Nausicaa the Valley of the Wind(on what I’m p sure was a bootlegged copy no less) and I kinda wonder if and how that impacted me :T
fwiw my first reaction was “lmao, of course it was”
Yeah see, like, I think about myself in context to it and I say: “Fantasy Sci-Fi. Huge, Wise, Rolly-Pollies. Lots of Guns. Giant Firemen of Death. Vast Deathforests eating Fallout to fix the Earth. Post-Apocalyptic. Female Protag who is both Deeply Compassionate and Ready to Fight for her Convictions at the drop of a hat, and isn’t presented as “Unnatural” or “Conflicted”. Ecologically Radical. Deeply, Inherently Political. Ultimately Pacifistic and Egalitarian. Amoral Charismatic Lady-Villain in Armor Driving Tanks, Getting in Sword Fights, and generally Ruining everyone’s Shit. Clear Chemistry between Lady-Hero and Lady-Villain. Anger-Hair” and I’m like. Yeah. Of course. No Brainer. But then I think: but I can’t remember ever NOT being into those things :|
But here’s the other thing: I can’t remember a time when I hadn’t seen it either! It was just always That Animated Dune with Subtitles. So maybe the first time I saw it I was really, really young, and it had a big impact, or maybe it was just the Perfect Thing for me that Miyazaki just, fortuitously, made. I simply cannot know u_u
