Grad student Harrianthe meetcute where their eyes lock while sneaking into the bio lab at 3am to compound and self-administer their own hormones/antipsychotics
- Augustine is doing psych research and Mercymorn is doing hormone stuff so Harrow and Ianthe are sneaking into each other’s labs to steal the relevant supplies for this
- Ianthe is tired of fighting with doctors who know less about trans care than she does and has decided to just DIY all of her own hormones and do her own bloodwork
- Harrow is terrified that if she honestly describes how frequently she’s hallucinating to a psychiatrist she’ll be forcibly hospitalized for her own safety and is trying to fix the problem herself
- They are united by their extreme willingness to self-administer experimental medical care in violation of all reasonable safety precautions and I for one think that’s very sexy of them
- At some point they inevitably get caught together in the lab at night and everyone quite reasonably assumes they’re dating because why else would they be meeting up like that. John tries to give them a workplace safety lecture that devolves into a safe sex talk
- Also quite inevitably they manage to fuck up their meds halfway through the term and can’t go to anyone but each other for help because that would mean admitting all the sketchy stuff they’ve been doing to an external authority
- In the end they’re saved from getting caught and kicked out of their PhD program only by the fact that everything else blew up at the end of term too and half the faculty in the department got arrested for fraud and/or murder
