This story of tech firm Palo Alto using women literally dressed as sexy lamps for their event at a cybersecurity conference (and getting massive blowback from women in tech) has been going around, and it feels like some weird combination of the 00s era of video game "booth babes" (when I saw the story I was like "what year is it?") combined with somebody thinking Kelly Sue DeConnick's "sexy lamp test" was an instruction manual. >_>

Tangentially, I feel like if there was a comic book supervillain whose gimmick was lamps, they'd probably have minions dressed like this.

When I say “free water, free food, free shelter, free healthcare, free education for everyone” in that “everyone” I even include the people I hate. Too many people get surprised at the idea that I do wish for the people I hate to have better lives.

When I say EVERYONE, I mean EVERYONE. These are things ALL people should have. If you reblog this saying “except THIS group” then you’ve missed the point entirely.

i want to remove the boots from necks altogether, not just be the one to put on the boot.

“Rich kids should go to public schools. The mayor should ride the subway to work. When wealthy people get sick, they should be sent to public hospitals. Business executives should have to stand in the same airport security lines as everyone else. The very fact that people want to buy their way out of all of these experiences points to the reason why they shouldn’t be able to. Private schools and private limos and private doctors and private security are all pressure release valves that eliminate the friction that would cause powerful people to call for all of these bad things to get better. The degree to which we allow the rich to insulate themselves from the unpleasant reality that others are forced to experience is directly related to how long that reality is allowed to stay unpleasant. When they are left with no other option, rich people will force improvement in public systems. Their public spirit will be infinitely less urgent when they are contemplating these things from afar than when they are sitting in a hot ER waiting room for six hours themselves.”

Yeah. The article probably covers it, but this even works for GOOD experiences; it's harder to think of your not-rich fellow citizens as "lesser-than" when you're hanging in the same public park every weekend, sitting next to them in the same sports arena, taking the same tours in the same museums, or sharing a camp-ground in the same national park. A big reason WHY Republicans have pushed so hard(politically and culturally: see their participation in the long-running PR campaign against public transit as "low class") to create a wealth(and race)-segregated society is because they know rich(and white) people sharing experiences with non-rich(and non-white) people will naturally create solidarity between them and erode support for their political project.

the ideas that “libido and attraction can be separate and for many aces they are”, “aces who have and enjoy sex are still ace” and “aces who do not have sex and don’t want to shouldn’t be pressured” and “you should accept aces regardless of their sexual behavior” can and should coexist

the older i get the more i realize that ideas need to exist in an ecosystem to be stable and healthy. all the ideas above aren’t in competition for supremacy because they mutually support and reinforce each other. the more you learn to appreciate all the different permutations of facts, the more you can understand and enjoy the wonderful complexity of human experience.

Y’know what…

Yeah. I want my tax dollars to pay for the healthcare of the person who started smoking and kept smoking because they think it looks cool and doesn’t give a shit about all the warnings. I want my tax dollars to pay for the healthcare of the person who destroyed their liver because they just love drinking and didn’t stop even if they weren’t addicted. I want my tax dollars to pay for the healthcare of the person who never drinks water, only regular cola. I want my tax dollars to pay for the healthcare of the person who missed the trampoline when they jumped off the roof to impress their friends. I want my tax dollars to pay for the healthcare of every single person who had to have a surgeon remove something without a flared base from their assholes. I want my tax dollars to pay for all the kinds healthcare needed by all the kinds of people who decided to have sex without any kind of barrier. I want my tax dollars to help fix the teeth of meth users. I want my tax dollars to help everyone who’s been noncompliant with the doctor’s recommendations, everyone who’s been a hypochondriac in the ER, everyone who let things get bad before getting help.

Everyone is deserving.
