there's a lot to be said about how the average person indulges in delusions far more than anyone is really comfortable grappling with. every now and again, a poll comes out that reveals some sort of number of people who believe they have magical powers, usually pretty high, and everyone takes turns making fun of it and affirming their own Sanity

this is more observational than scientific, but it really does seem like writing off delusional thinking as the realm of the "insane" creates this valley where the "normal" person's thinking (especially a person who considers themself normal, but that's a whole other kettle of fish) must be more empirical, because, categorically, they are not insane

I betray a bit of a tendency towards criticising pop-psychiatry here, but I really don't think it's entirely fair to treat "hallucinations" and "delusions" as these incomprehensible eldritch states of the Other when the most stable person you know is a few nights of bad sleep and one day of unreturned phonecalls away from saying something that would qualify them for a pretty severe diagnosis

most people won't admit to having any kind of hallucination at all for fear of being locked up and yet the occasional weird fucking nighttime ones that you know aren't real are, to my knowledge, one of the most common and universal human experiences

there's an interesting thing I've noticed pretty often when someone first makes friends with schizophrenic people, which is that they undergo this period where they get anxious about whether or not they're a little schizophrenic (I'm guilty of doing this too) before either shutting down entirely or becoming more open to engaging with their own internal concept of sanity

it's so universal that it really brings into sharp focus just how much effort social norms encourage in rejecting everything that could make you seem even a little bit similar to groups that have been written off as morally defective, which makes them seem even more alien and incomprehensible in turn

you're only really allowed to acknowledge these experiences if you're making jokes about them, which I think is a big reason why shadow people and sleep paralysis demons are such an enduring topic of memes. you're only allowed to acknowledge you experience distressing sensory phenomena when it's part of a socially affirming in-joke

The vast majority of mental illness symptoms are completely typical functions and behaviours, but occurring frequently or severely enough to become a problem. They're not some Unique Thing Only Those Insane People Have.

yes I am always saying that.

mental illnesses are almost always "you do something that everyone does, but REALLY BAD or REALLY OFTEN"

like, ADHD: Basically every ADHD symptom is something that everyone does. fidgeting? having trouble focusing? getting distracted? hyperfocusing? time blindness?

Everyone does those from time to time and for one reason or another. We call it ADHD when you do it so much that it causes you problems, and it can't easily be fixed by things like "drink less coffee" or "get rid of distractions".

And the same goes for delusions and hallucinations. Everybody can get them, it's not a fundamentally different thing that only People With Delusion/Hallucination Disease get.

Yeah, and I'd add the way psychology and mental illness are stigmatized in global capitalist culture really doesn't help matters.

Like: I grew up in an environment where psychology was often discussed and treated as normal and, while that didn't SOLVE these issues for me, it did give me a non-judgemental, empirical frame-of-reference for explaining and managing them. X Hallucination or paranoid delusion may have been utterly believable and terrifying in the moment, but being able to say "that wasn't real, it was just my brain" helped me to process them non-destructively in the long term, and ultimately to learn how to control my immediate reactions to them. It certainly wasn't perfect or a cure, but compared to the Popular Media view of "you're broken and Wrong", or the superstitious view of "you're special and magic and god/demons is/are talking to you", it was certainly more beneficial.

on the Quizzardry stream the other day you mentioned that rich people are extremely susceptible to being tricked by wizards, and i can't stop thinking about flipping that on its head and treating "professionally tricks rich people" as a (somewhat flippant) definition of 'wizard'.

am i a wizard if i scam a modern-day VC techbro into throwing money at my shiny bullshit project?

No. However if you sold that guy healing supplements you are doing fundamentally the same thing that some magicians in ancient Greece were doing.

Alex Jones, with 100% seriousness, considers himself a prophet. He believes magic is real, and an active threat to his political goals.

He believes himself to have a a special connection with god, and has attempted to invoke the angelic hordes through the power of prayer multiple times during his career.

He actually fits this flippant definition of wizard better than most.

Yeah. We laugh and joke about wizards here on tumblr dot com, but it's important to recognize that people who genuinely believe they are magic --who genuinely believe god talks directly to them, genuinely believe their own thoughts are god's thoughts, genuinely believe they can read other people's minds, genuinely believe they can make things happen in the world just by willing them to happen, genuinely believe they are the main characters of existence and that everyone else are various gradations of fake-people less human than themselves-- exist, and many of them are out there dedicating their lives to making existence measurably worse for the rest of us.

"Trots"(ie "Trotskyites") at the BANK OF ENGLAND. Those notable communists, BANKERS :|

Going to a wake is WOKE. Sitting over the corpse of a person you cared about, toasting their life and sharing stories of them with other people who loved them, is Black USians being aware of the systemic oppression they face in their daily lives :| :|

Conservatives are out there discovering stunning new vistas of self-delusion every day. Really innovating the field of choosing to "believe" the most unhinged, ridiculous nonsense you've ever heard uttered in your whole damn live.

Just so we’re all clear: psychosis is a relatively common human experience. Psychosis is a state of mind that results in difficulties determining what is real and what is not. Anyone can experience psychosis given the right conditions, such as: lack of sleep, stress, sustance abuse, falling asleep/waking up, recent death of a loved one, etc.

Being psychotic is when you have a mental health condition that causes ongoing episodes of psychosis. If you hallucinate once or twice then you are not psychotic. Everyone experiences psychosis differently, you don’t have to hallucinate to be psychotic you can also experience delusions. Some psychotic people are constantly experiencing psychosis, some have random episodes, some have specific triggers, some have psychosis when experiencing negative emotions or other mental illness symptoms. Some psychotic people know when they are hallucinating/experiencing delusions, some do not, some have a mixture of believing their symptoms are real or not. Not all psychotic people are schizophrenic, psychosis can occur in lots of different mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, borderline personality disorder, schizotypical personality disorder, schizoid personality disorder, paranoid personality disorder, PTSD, depression and many more. You likely know a psychotic person, you interact with psychotic people everyday. We are not some vague other, we are your friends, your family, your classmates, your teachers, your coworkers, the cashier at the grocery store, the repairman fixing your car, the receptionist answering your phone calls. You often can’t tell someone’s psychotic by looking at them. All psychotic people deserve to be taken seriously.

Psychotic people have a very different experience than yours, in more ways than you’d think. Please listen to us and take our experiences seriously. We experience a unique type of ableism in all aspects of life. Never ever call the police on a psychotic person. Never ever get angry at someone expressing their symptoms or try to force them to see reality from your perspective. Never ever deny someone their basic autonomy due to their psychosis. We are still humans deserving of respect.

Lmao

i hate this so much lol

Must be fucking nice

So ole girl got a free job a free house and then was like “see it’s not that hard!” i’m crying

This is how most rich people think though. They think they’ve gotten to where they are in life because of dedication hard work, but its mostly because they’re even richer parents gave them a bunch of free shit.
