My university did nothing to stand between my undocumented community and the hateful hands of radicalized white men, the AntiFas did. A peaceful protest was not going to cancel that event, just like numerous letters from faculty, staff, Freedom of Speech Movement veterans, and even donors did not cancel the event. Only the destruction of glass, and shooting of fireworks did that. The so called “violence” against private property that the media seems so concerned with stopped white supremacy from organizing itself against my community. Everything else seemed an act of passive acceptance to the hate speech that was about to take place on our campus.

Right now, the black bloc protesters from the D.C. protest are facing a decade in jail and a fine (each) of $25,000. No one was hurt during their protest, but Starbucks and McDonald’s had to replace some windows and a limousine, a symbol of America’s wealth disparity, burned. And meanwhile, liberals are gleefully making memes of a black bloc protester engaging in the great American pastime of punching Nazis. Lots of people secretly really like the black bloc. If you doubt that, just Google ‘Richard Spencer gets punched in the face’ to see just how fond people are of the black bloc’s direct action approach to stopping Nazis in their tracks. And that’s what we need to do right now. Many progressives have been raised to tolerate outlandish ideologies in the spirit of inclusivity, but the far-right is now exploiting the sanctity of safe spaces in order to advance fascism, which will destroy our democracy. You don’t hug and coddle Nazis. It doesn’t work. Fascists only understand aggressive defeat. Radical protest creates the space for actions like the Women’s March. By pushing the Overton Window left, the black bloc makes the Women’s March look like a hyper-reasonable movement. ‘We’d better deal with these nice white ladies,’ some in power might say, ‘They’re nothing like those crazy kids dressed in black.’ I promise you: the Nazis don’t fear peaceful liberal protests, but they may think twice about marching in public if the black bloc is there to meet them.

If you want to talk about their tactics, talk about their tactics, but if you enjoyed seeing that asshole get hit in the face, put $5 into their legal defense fund or the NLG defense fund. Your meme hero could easily have been among the ones arrested.

Honestly outside of a few useful idiots like Nick Spencer I’m starting to think the majority of people saying “don’t punch nazis”… are nazis. Just saw someone saying “Hitler deserved a fair trial, not to be punched” for example but it quickly became obvious they were Alt Right. Remember that Gater tactics didn’t just involve harassment they involved massive disinformation campaigns. Totally possible we’re seeing that here, and that “civic-minded liberals” calling for the sanctity of freeze peach are actually mostly sockpuppets. And Nick Spencer.

I’d say there’s likely plenty of this, but there are also plenty of leftists, including centrist liberals, who would likely take this stance. Here’s One Example. And a liberal taking the Exact Opposite Stance from the exact same blog.

So to me the thing is this: “Liberal” constitutes a pretty wide ideological area, and “Left” even more so. Sure, the whole labeling “liberals” the problem coming from some quarters of the Left bugs me as a person who 1)is happy to take that label and 2)understands the long history of rightists pulling the above and generally trying to turn “liberal” into a dirty word, BUT at the same time the claim that there are centrist liberals opposed to pushing back against fascists with violence isn’t spun from whole cloth.

I guess what I’m saying is you just gotta look into the source for these things if you want to know whether the person’s being sincere, or just trying to sow discord. And also that it’s just as important to keep this stuff in its proper perspective as it is to know its purpose: Antifa tearing into, specifically, “liberals who denounce violent protest” are still far closer to those liberals politically than folks like Spencer or his supporters who Crowdfunded a Bounty for info on his attacker. Making each other the enemy distracts from our shared goal.
