Can you imagine having Tumblr on your resume at this point?

“Yeah I worked on a site that wound up with a huge child pornography and pornography bot problem that we didn’t address, deleted legitimate users in an attempt to get rid of them without success, managed to give a platform to nazis and white nationalists, and effectively killed the website.”

On Tumblr Links:

So, a while back Tumblr made a change where links on posts would cause the post to not show up in search unless it was a tumblr link.

This was in an attempt to kneecap pornbots, but also hurt creators.

One workaround that was done was to use your blog and make a redirect link to the site you wanted. This can be done from editing your blog theme, adding a page, and setting its type to ‘redirect.’ (Then like for me, zedrin-maybe.tumblr.com/twitter goes to my twitter URL) Unfortunately, mobile users will not be able to use these links.

After some time they removed this restriction for SFW blogs. They could link again without their posts being hidden.

The restriction is now back, and here’s some information on it so you can deal with it, if you’re a creator who needs to put links on your work:

1. Things like Youtube links appear to be whitelisted and thus are unaffected. This is new.

As you can see a link is present on both posts. One is a video embed (so seriously stop fucking reuploading peoples’ works to this site just embed them you fucks okay enough of that tangent), and the other is a gifset. Both have links to their respective youtube videos.

2. The redirect method appears to still work. There were some concerns that it did not.

Those links are both redirects to my twitter and patreon. I also confirmed this worked for my NSFW blog posts.

Conversely, direct links to my patreon or twitter do NOT show up in search.

So yeah. This shit’s annoying, but isn’t new. It’s a reversal of a reversal.

Part of me can understand why they’re doing this but that doesn’t mean I agree with it. The whitelisted links part is new, might be good to figure out what sources are ‘safe to link.’ (Still pressure tumblr to reverse this change.)

So I sent Tumblr a message asking if the new ‘share-to-IM’ feature was meant to replace replies, since it’s in the same spot, and this is what I got:

So apparently replies are still eventually going to make a return in some other form (hopefully, anyway).

Avatar

The messaging system is such a piece of crap that to prevent my phone from being overloaded with notifications, I’m setting it so I can only receive messages from blogs I follow, and I will start unfollowing blogs that try to contact me via the messaging system.

This thing is utter garbage. I don’t need my phone to ping with 8 notifications in rapid fire.

And even if it didn’t ping the service is so horribly redundant that I wouldn’t want to use it anyway.

Verdict on tumblr messaging:

it’s shit

its functionality is nothing like replies

and whenever you get a message, it pings your phone. loudly.

You can’t shut this ping off.

@staff you suck at this.

on the next episode of tumblr dot com

Hey guys, you know tags? Well, like comments, they’re gonna be going away for a moment as we replace them with something even better!

Emoticons.

Literally just fucking emoticons that you can add to your posts to tell people how you feel. We’re removing the ability to search for tags since the search bar searches all of a post anyway because fuck you.

so yeah, expect to have absolutely nothing for 2 to 67 days while we fumble around and get our shitty update live.

o gee i wonder if anyone’s gonna get pissed at me over this comic.

but seriously I have no idea where this stigma of ‘Likes are worthless’ came about. I’ve been saying it’s stupid for a long time. Now I’m saying it in visual form, yay!

Reblogs are nice, this is true. They’re more useful to an artist than likes, also true, and are especially appreciated if there’s commentary added in in the captions or tags. But, Likes are still worthwhile in their own right, and by no means are you ever obligated to reblog someone’s art. While they’d like it if you did, it is your blog and they cannot force you to share it on there if you don’t want to, no matter how badly they try to guilt trip you.

Also I’m getting mighty tired of comics speaking on my behalf and falsely asserting that I as an artist don’t appreciate likes. So can we stop these silly attempts at guilt tripping people now, and stop complaining about people who like our work? They seriously started cropping up like a fad.

also plz reblawg mah comic dont liek it jus reblawg if u dont u R DISRPETCTRAN ME AS AN ARTHRITIS

tumblr discourse has truly taken away the right to subjective opinions and its exhausting

like now instead of saying “i like this tv show because it is entertaining and engaging” you have to come up with totally ridiculous reasons as to why this random television show on like, the CW or something is Actually the paradigm of feminist media even when it isnt at all

instead of saying “this celebrity is obnoxious and overrated and annoying” you get people searching meticulously through their twitter or interviews in order to find something incriminating enough to end up on a yfip list, and now you can pretend that your reasons for disliking this celebrity arent entirely personal and have some kind of Righteous Cause backing it

you dont need to put politics into everything you love and you dont need to bend over backwards trying to explain why this Thing you love is Actually Totally Political. you are allowed to subjectively enjoy things. conversely you can hate looking at a celebrity’s dumb face without acting like theres always some kind of social justice reason fueling it

I’m never gonna understand why on Tumblr there’s often this overarching mentality that “My issues are others’ issues.”

Like, not to shit on peoples’ experiences, but ultimately what you’ve gone through or whatever conditions you have are going to still be your responsibility at the end of the day. I see posts like “please respect people with x and don’t do thing!” all the time.

You can ask people to accommodate you, and many will, but ultimately they have no obligation to and it’s not by default disrespectful if they decide not to. If they’re not doing anything illegal, their actions are their own--they’re not coming into your space and trying to force anything on you, by contrast by requesting them to accommodate you, you’re entering their space. And that’s not a bad thing either--just understand that they have no obligation to you if they decide not to be accommodating. And if it’s a severe enough case, then unfollow them.

Probably one of the best examples of what I’m talking about: I remember there was an anon asking a space blog to tag their posts, because space was distressing to them. why even follow that blog in the first place if that’s the case

Also note I’m talking only about blogs and dashboards here, things that are strictly one’s own space.

tumblr: GUYS MAKE SURE TO SOURCE ART WHEN YOU POST IT! Ask for artists' permission to share! It's important that content creators get credited for their work!
tumblr: *proceeds to reupload animations and youtube videos to tumblr without even mentioning the animator or original video creator*
tumblr: *posts and reblogs vines from others' source material with captions of 'lol who made this'*
tumblr: *posts unsourced music with no title or description just cause it matches up with a gif*
tumblr: :) protect content creators

I don’t get where the push to abandon using the ‘like’ button in favor of the reblog button came from.

Like, yeah, as an artist, reblogs are great. I love it when people share my work.

But I still like and appreciate ‘likes.’ I’m getting tired of people acting like they’re worthless cause they mean something to me, still. :c And I’m sure the same is true for other artists.

By all means push for more reblogs and stuff, but don’t devalue ‘likes’ in the process.

I JUST NOTICED

TUMBLR BROUGHT BACK STATISTICS ON THE MAIN PAGE

NO MORE HAVING TO ACCESS THE DROPDOWN OR SEPARATE DASHBOARDS TO SEE THEM

It baffles me how impressionable a lot of people on this site are.

Like, it goes for a variety of users, but it gets dangerous for younger ones especially. A lot of really gross advice parades under the guise of making Tumblr more of a ‘safe zone.’

What hopefully happens, you’ll get a bit older and look back and start to realize how unrealistic some of your outlooks on life were. The other option is to take the bad advice and unhealthy outlooks to heart, and I think it’s understated how problematic that can be for a person.

NEW PHOTOSET DIMENSIONS

Something wasn't adding up math-wise so I took a screenshot and did some measurements.

The middle pic in the 3's is actually 178 pixels, not 177. Probably wouldn't notice and won't affect much.

The gaps are all 4 pixels, vertically and horizontally, and gaps + pic space always should add up to 540 horizontally. (268 + 268 + 4 = 540; 177 + 4 + 178 + 4 + 177 = 540)

i s2g I'm getting sick of complaints and reblogs over the update

  1. Yeah the update was glitchy. For a short time. Like maybe 2 hours, tops. Some formatting options weren’t restricted or removed like they should’ve been. This was patched pretty quickly and was really only a problem if you followed people who were assholes and exploited the glitch.
  2. Tumblr as a whole is not broken, it hasn’t been broken. Stop fucking exaggerating with sensationalism. There’s a difference between someone intentionally fucking up their own post (even if it displays outside of their own boundaries) and Tumblr inadvertently breaking your own when you’re not doing anything.
  3. Things that people are complaining tumblr added in out of suspicions already existed. Like posting an image via URL? Did you seriously never see that option when posting a photoset before? Hell that shit comes in handy if you post your OWN artwork to multiple sites. Sourcing still exists, only complaint that would be legit in respect to that is if they had a comment within the upload button pointing to the options saying “If you got your art from somewhere else, be sure to include a source.” But beyond that, nothing’s different than it was before.
  4. Has anyone even recognized any of the major bug fixes they’ve had with in-line images and asks? You can now properly upload multiple images to a single ask, and you do not get spammed with dialogues when trying to upload an image to multiple asks. Oh yeah, and in-line image uploading as a whole is SIGNIFICANTLY faster
  5. Out of everything that was on Tumblr before, the only thing that’s been removed is the ability to post an in-line image via a link, rather than direct upload. You’ll gradually stop seeing those little gray boxes unless there’s some way to still post them in. This isn’t a HUGE deal, and one flip side to it is that it’s now possible to directly upload in-line images to the comments of a photoset. That was something long overdue.
  6. A legit complaint is that the GUI isn’t as intuitive; the minimalism does make it a bit confusing. Another one is that the font colors for like tags are very difficult on some eyes. In some cases the new GUI also doesn’t work properly. These are all examples of things that were design choices, not fleeting aspects.
  7. In short stop freaking out over the trivial shit. If you’re gonna complain, complain about something that’s actually a problem.
  8. Seriously I wouldn’t even be this acidic if it were just like 1 person posting to complain about it but seriously this shit’s occupied like 50% of my dashboard at certain times.
