Ngl if I was Mertha I'd be feeling so dumb when the news comes that Patrick is dead. I mean, it literally happened right in front of her.

And I can't help but go back and laugh at all the times Mertha called Dae powerless or useless or just a hostage and worth nothing, then Dae does this. 😆 😂

But knowing Mertha, I bet she'll just be really mad at Dae (not herself) and maybe a little scared.

It would be funny if in the future Dae mocks her over it. Like, "Hey Mertha, I know that since the blockade was put in place there's been a food shortage, and you do look a bit hungry; do you want some of my porridge?" 🤣😂

Oh Mertha is going to be pissed for sure because it shows her incompetence, so Dae will likely be in an even shorter leash.

Awwww this chapter got me the moment where Dae recalls the first time Aemond sneaking in her chambers and him tripping due to his blindness and him being embarrassed by it.🥲🥲

The fact that he practiced and memorized her chambers so he wouldnt trip and be embarrassed infront of her is so endearing and sad at the same time.

They should have made her chambers their marital quarters, she thought sourly. She would have much preferred the familiarity of her own room, smaller though it was, over these chambers. At least there, she would feel a sense of grounding, surrounded by what was hers. And, she supposed, Aemond wouldn’t have to map out new surroundings.

Even she is rightfully angry at him, she is still conscious enough to think of his disability.

Now that I think of it, would Aemond be afraid to hold and walk around with Rhaegar in his arms because he fears he would trip with him in his arms🥺🥺

Avatar

That's the hardest part about the state of their relationship--being angry and hating him, but still there's a part of her that still thinks of him and considers his well-being/feelings.

And I also think it's because of how much his disability effects him that she thinks of him, even when angry, because it's more than just discomfort, its about knowing how deeply he feels about it and how he's embarrassed to show any weakness like that.

Yea, I think he'd be uncertain about holding the baby, but at the same time really wants to do it.

Will the prolong be Fenrick's POV as he tries to make his escape?

Yes--and its the Epilogue, I conflated the prologue with the epilogue lol

But yes, it will follow Fenrick

You can bet that Daenera would throw Rhaegar’s soiled cloth to Criston Cole’s back and cloak. I mean its already soiled, adding baby poopy is not going to hurt.

Daenera going around drive-by bombing people with Rhaegar's diapers

I find this thought fucking hilarious!

"Unfavorable traits" like fucking the Dowager queen? 👀

If Mertha knew about their sordid little tryst would her opinion of Alicent take a nosedive? Or would she frame it as "the virtuous pious queen was lead astray and into sin by the evil rakish Dornishman?"

I mean, people who is so... religious and conservative as Mertha would vote for a rapist madman to take the throne (not calling Aegon a madman yet though) so while I do think her opinion of Alicent would take a hit, especially since Alicent wouldn't fit the very specific mold the world and she herself has forced her into, I also think it is very possible that Mertha would come up with ways to justify and excuse her. She would, however, frown upon Cole as you said! 100%

Since Mertha is bigoted towards Dornish looking people, how does she view Criston? Or is he "one of the good ones?"

He's one of the 'good ones' but like.... she'd turn on him if he exhibits any 'unfavorable' traits

I know everyone’s talking about the DaeMond reactions to the maesters writing the dumb stories that the smallfolk will misinterpret for generations to come but I’m thinking about Aegon laughing at the stories and then popping up like a gremlin and adding in his own lies for fun and further tarnishing their reputations. “The good king Aegon ll watched in horror when the kingdom fell apart as his one eyed ogre brother destroyed the castle and killed men mercilessly for the vain and callous Princess Daenera.”

If Ageon were alive at that point Aemond would hit him in the head with a book lol and then strangle him

Rhaegar better poop and puke on Alicent if she thinks she can change his name. That his poop goes into her dress😂😂

Anyone who we dont like gets to hold Rhaegar (Alicent, Otto, Aegon and Cole) baby puke and poop.

Daenera using Rhaegar as a squirt gun but since he's a baby she can get away with it

We already know who is Daenera’s faceclaim but what about the supporting characters like Finan, Eddelin, Mertha and Fenrick? And Willem(Joker)

Everytime I read Mertha I envision either Miss Trunchbald from Matilda or Dolores Umbridge from HP actresses. But I see more Dolores Umbridge in Mertha😂

I know the beauty standards for women back in the Westerosi/medieval settings were really high especially for noblewomen were really important and they had more access to makeup, jewelry, etc but Mertha should be the last one commenting on Daenera’s weight and calling her fat because she’s old and considered “used.” But Mertha was right when she said that beauty can wilt or beauty fades over time. Daenera is beautiful but she’s got her intelligence and her skills in healing and poisons.

YES!!! The beauty standard for women in Westeros is insane--as in history--but it's really interesting to see what privilege can do and how it is both a blessing and a curse.

Summary:You will be trapped by the obligations of love and duty, unable to escape the web of expectations others have woven around you,“ the witch said….

Chapter 98: Think of Home

The night seemed endless.

A dense, stifling silence filled the room, hanging in the air like an executioner’s blade poised to descend. Daenera lay curled in bed, her eyes fixed on the dying hearth, watching as the flames sputtered and waned, each flicker growing weaker until they left only a bed of glowing embers. The fire had burned itself out, leaving her nothing but shadows and an oppressive weight that pressed against her chest. Beneath her ribs, a tight, sickening knot had formed, burning low and deep like molten lead.

The tears she had shed had long since dried, their salty remnants lingering on her skin, and within, a hollow ache remained. She’d spent the night tossing and turning, seeking sleep that refused her, unable to silence the whirl of thoughts crowding her mind.

Poor Patrick. It was a mercy if he was going to be stuck indefinitely in the dungeons but he didn’t deserve to die 😢 I wonder what the Greens response will be when they find out he’s dead and they don’t have leverage on her. Will Patrick’s parents do anything? It was clear Dae struggled with this decision and I can imagine this will weigh on her in the future. I hope it pisses Larys off that she did this right under his nose.

Dae is stronger than me because I would have bitch slapped Mertha so hard if she kept pinching me like that. I can’t wait for her demise. It’s a pity she didn’t drop dead in shock over her nightgown.

Dae’s reaction to Aemond’s altercation was definitely on point. Very “your crazy matches my crazy” (but I’m supposed to hate you right now).

Hopefully the message Dae gave Fenrick will explain her decisions but Aemond previously placing doubt could complicate this. I’m sure he felt smug telling her that he knew she gave the letter and that he sent his own message.

I can’t wait for Dae’s bitchy era! 🥰

Enjoy your well deserved break!

I had thought about bringing Patrick's parents in to create drama, but the knowledge that Daenera poisoned him is limited to the council--since there's no evidence and there's nothing but speculation and rumors. The most logical explanation which is the one most people will believe is that the Greens neglected him and he fell sick and died.

Mertha WILL get slapped, trust me. We're heading there.

Bitchy era is coming <3

Fenrick is so dead, isn't he?

OMG, is he going make it all the way to Dragonstone only for Daemon to kill him for his perceived failures? That would suck to make it all the way to "safety" only to die anyway.

And how's Jelissa doing on Dragonstone?

Avatar

I have a plan for Fenrick, and due to how he is turning out, he definitely won't survive till the end of the story.

Jelissa is doing well on Dragonstone. I'm considering her future, I don't want to focus too much on her, but she'll be in scenes and I don't know if I should have her involved with going to the Vale with Rhaena and the children--and then Braavos, though the battle of the Gullet happens.

I hate the thought of killing every small character off and such, but it's just so easy.

I do, however, have a handful of smaller characters that does make it further into the story--and even to the end.

On how years later there’d be books of Daenera being the kidnapped princess and Fenrick being a knight who rescues her probably, I can imagine Aemond ordering that those books be accidentally maliciously destroyed and any peasant repeating it be thrown in the dungeons. It’s treason after all.

I wonder if Aemond would be writing his own fanfiction of events because at least then he won't be the villain all the time--though he is lol

I think he'd be amused with the retelling of the Princess and the Knight because he knows it's not true, but he'd be annoyed if anyone made japes at him about it.

Peasants will say Princess Daenera gave a loyal brave knight a handkerchief as a token/favor of gratitude for her rescue (they just heard she gave him something and no one really knows about the letter) it also sounds cute for stories; think about that one scene in Shrek with Fiona giving him a handkerchief. Years later Queen Daenera’s reading the book knowing how dumb that is before King Aemond respectfully lets her finish it before grabbing it and tossing it into the fireplace.

Hoestly, I could see Daenera being fucking annoyed by the Maesters/Citadel's version of events during the Dance and going 'what the fuck is this? This is not right, let me give my own--biased--telling of what the fuck happened'

And then decades later when the histories are written as in F&B we'll have these Maesters picking apart her telling and versions and misconstruing it because, again, she is a woman and she cannot be objective about anything--as though they're not at alllll biased themselves.

But I agree, I think the peasants will tell lodes of stories--I just cant say that they'll speak favorably about Fenrick.

Avatar

One thing I can't wait to see is the Greens reaction to Patrick's death. No way they don't know/figure out that Daenera killed him.

Aemond will be like 😍🥵, as he always is when Dae does something dark and twisted.

Alicent will probably be furious, shocked, and maybe even a little scared of Daenera, after all she did just kill an innocent child while being under constant watch for the past 2-ish weeks. Who knows what else she's capable of?

Otto will probably be surprised that it happened and mad over it, as he just lost all his leverage over her.

Larys - who knows what that freak will feel? Surprised? Impressed? Mad over losing leverage? It's an enigma with him.

Mertha will most likely see Daenera as even more of a monster than she already does, in addition to being furious that it literally happened right in front of her. I can totally see why she's going to treat Dae even worse until she croaks.

I don't think Cole's opinion could worsen, considering how much he already hates her. Initial surprise sure, but also, maybe he would consider murdering a child as 'in character' for her.

Gwayne will probably be surprised and maybe a little alarmed that Dae is capable of that kind of ruthlessness.

Aegon might mockingly congratulate Dae over being so callos as to kill a child. And he might throw some digs at Aemond about it.

But what will Edelin and Finan feel? Edelin does seem to like Dae, and I hope this doesn't make Edelin distance herself from her. And Finan was the one who got those yew seed berries. How will he feel knowing that he aided in the murder of a child? Will he be angry at Daenera for it?

Also, will Patrick's death result in Dae being more restricted and watched, with her stuff being looked through several times a week? So many questions and worries for Dae.

Enjoy you hiatus, Zeciex, you've certainly earned it!

Avatar

They will certainly have an reaction--we'll get a council scene in chapter 1 or 2 of season 2. It will definitely have an effect, and she'll be put on even stricter watch--but as much as they want to attribute it to her, it could so easily be him catching something in the dungeons and croaking. We know it's not that, and the council knows it's not that, but his death would be attributed to being in the dungeons.

It doesn't change the restrictions though. And it will make Mertha both afraid and even more angry at her, because, as you said, it happened under her watch.

Otto will be annoyed but pragmatic--she is married now and theirs. And I think a part of him will be impressed.

Larys? I have no idea, but I imagine he'd be amused.

Gwayne may be shocked, surprised, even a little off put but at the same time, I think he'd understand why she did it--he has a bit of his father in him, so he can be pragmatic as well, while being sympathetic.

Aegon will make some japes--both at Dae and Aemond, though he's sleeping off his hungover when the council meeting is held.

I think Daenera will talk with Edelin about it, about why she did what she did. Edelin likes Daenera--Dae is kind to her and treats her well, almost an equal and she's been relatively honest with her, so I also think Edelin would outright ask her about it.

As for Finan, I think he knew when he provided the berries that there was a purpose behind it. He will feel a sort of guilt or maybe even shame, but at the same time, he understands because he's seen what happened to the other men, what would undoubtedly have happened to Patrick, and he knew where he was, the boy wouldn't have survived for long in those dungeons.

Patrick's death is a sacrifice and a mercy--but his death would have been inevitable even if Daenera didn't make this choice. He already had the nose around his neck, she just eased him into sleep.

The first chapter will deal with the immediate aftermath and all Daenera's thoughts and emotions about it. She will swing from justifying it to thinking herself selfish, being sad and then callously ruthless. I think its something that will stay with her for a long while.
