The Old Guard Reverse Big Bang 2022 - @theoldguardevents

“Sometimes you can get what you need” by @sharkie335

Nicky is an Omega whose parents have kept isolated since he presented at sixteen in order to preserve his purity. They decide to hold a Masquerade ball for his “coming out” and to see what offers they get for his hand.

His father decided that the best offer has come from the Merrick family, which horrifies Nicky. Not knowing what else to do, and having very little power in the situation, he stops eating.

Eventually his father comes around, with a little help, and the crisis is averted. Nicky is finally given some say in his own life and he chooses Joe, even though he’s only actually met him for a few minutes.

Will he be happy with his choice?

I was so lucky to get not one, but two amazing writers to write for my Masquerade prompt. Here’s @sharkie335′s take on it :D

The small leather pouch has been burning a hole in Yusuf’s pocket ever since the morning. The man who had handed it to him then, the hood of his heavy brown cloak drawn deep into his bearded, furrowed face, had disappeared again as soon as he had counted the coins Yusuf had given him in exchange for the stones.

Every time Yusuf closes his eyes, he can still see them lying in his palm.

The man had watched him closely with dark, narrow eyes as he had untied the strap and let the circular piece of leather fall open, shielding the transaction from prying gazes by blocking people’s view with his broad shoulders and back.

The stones had felt warmer than Yusuf had expected them to feel when he had finally held them in his hand. He had touched them carefully, gently, turning them around with the tip of his index finger to inspect them from all sides, stray rays of the rising sun catching in the golden veins running through the dark, rich blue.

Lapis lazuli.

TOG Reverse Big Bang 2022, Fic #1: All Unquiet Things

I’m pleased to share a fic I wrote for the TOG Reverse Bang 2022 (found here), inspired by the amazing @artgroves’s art prompt (art post here). It will be two chapters, and the second chapter will be posted in another three days.

Summary:

An upsetting sight as they travel north reignites the simmering hatred between Nicolò and Yusuf until it spills over into first violence, then desperate need for each other.

But despite their developing feelings for each other, both of them are stubborn, and need time to admit the depth of their love.

Rated E; the first chapter contains graphic depictions of violence, temporary canon character death, and brief descriptions of dead bodies.

I can finally reveal my first set of artworks for the TOG Reversebang. ✨

It was absolutely wonderful to see it inspire—and in return be inspired by—a hauntingly beautiful story about redemption, dealing with the trauma of their beginning, and finding a way forward.

And then @falcon-fox-and-coyote went and wrote a whole damn sequel (and there’s a third story coming!).

The Old Guard Reverse Big Bang 2022

Summary:

“You haven’t written in a while,” Nicky said, cuddling into Joe's arms.

“Shall I write for you?” Joe asked. “What shall I write?”

“I don't know, something sweet,” he suggested. “Nothing sad.”

“But I like sad poems.” He did too. He liked the grim reality of expression, the dark curls of violence that could be meted out in words if not deed. The reclamation of the horrors of their world, but put into perspective by pen and paper where there was no death, only life. Life and a condemnation for the hell of their reality.

Nicky poked him in the side. “Nothing sad,” he requested, old eyes made weary by the reality of the request. This too, Joe knew. For sometimes, sad words offered no catharsis. Sometimes, sad words or hateful claims were the only ways a mind could process the trauma. But sometimes it only trapped that pain in the presence. Sometimes it made it too real, too visceral, too constant. Sometimes, sad words could not bring a soul peace or satisfaction, for the mind already knows the world is a bad place, and instead it needed to be reminded that the world could be a good place too.
