Summary: Upon seeing one of the SOLDIERs receiving a package from home, Zack finds himself reminiscing about home and family with a few fresh-faced Third-Class SOLDIERs.

A rare crowd had gathered in the SOLDIER mess hall. Rare, because most SOLDIERs had been sent out to the fields on one mission or another. Zack himself had only returned from one such mission, dealing with skirmishes from local beasts that had been terrorizing a mining town on the outskirts of the continent. Not what one might expect a First-Class SOLDIER to be sent on, but they were short on SOLDIER operatives due to the mass desertion. The fresh-faced Thirds now sitting in a circle in front of him listened to his exploits in rapt attention, until Zack noticed their awed expressions and cleared his throat self-consciously.

How do you like this spot right here? Nice and shady, huh? This is the first tree I’ve seen in a while.

I miss all the trees back home. There were so many, all around town. I bet I climbed every last one of ’em when I was a kid.

Can’t believe we were really there, just a couple of weeks ago. Good old Gongaga. You think it’s funny, Cloud, but you’d love it there. Everything’s so green now, with the reactor out of commission. Some parts are kind of a mess, though. At least Mom and Dad are okay.

I wanted to stay there so bad, but Cissnei wouldn’t let me. She was right, though. Too obvious.

It’s okay if I keep talking, right? Hope I’m not boring you. If I had a radio, we could listen to some music… Hey, I know. Why don’t I sing something?

Heh. Just kidding. I wouldn’t do that to you.

We should rest up here a while, though. It’s gonna be a long journey to Midgar. We’re gonna have to go all the way around the island to Mideel and sneak onto another ship somehow. Hope we don’t run out of gas before we make it to port.

Sorry about the ride, by the way. I can tell it was rough on you.

Ah… there. How’s that? Comfortable?

Oh, man. You look like shit.

Sorry. I know it’s been a few hours and we’re out of water. All I’ve got is… this apple here.

Prompt: Role Model

SOLDIER First Class Zack Fair sat alone in the forty-ninth floor lobby at Shinra Headquarters with his head bowed and his hands between his knees, fingers wrapped tightly around the hilt of his new sword. The blade was still in near perfect condition. The few dings and scratches that marred the smooth slab of steel—they only served to remind him that he was still alive, and someone else was not.

Everyone at Shinra knew this sword had belonged to SOLDIER First Class Angeal Hewley. And if they didn’t—well, they ought to know it. Nobody else had ever owned a sword like this one. Big as a surfboard and nearly ten times heavier, carried everywhere he went but rarely used, the Buster Sword had been to Angeal what the Masamune still was to Sephiroth.

so it’s been Zack Fair week over on twitter!

I redid the main theme of Crisis Core in the style of the original FFVII.  Based most closely on the Under The Apple Tree version, but with a few changes to the melody and harmony as well as instrumentation.  I’ve done a few things with The Price of Freedom, the other main theme from the game, previously, but time to give this one a bit of focus too.
