It is Asian and Pacific Islander heritage month so please take a minute to read this. Samuel Kaleioka Kaeo, a Hawaiian professor has a warrant out for his arrest just for speaking Hawaiian in court. He is facing charges for protesting against the construction of a telescope on a sacred mountain in Haleakalā. Words cannot convey how disgusted I am with this trash country.

“Punishing Native Hawaiians for speaking our native language invokes a disturbing era in Hawaii’s history when olelo Hawaii was prohibited in schools, a form of cultural suppression that substantially contributed to the near extinction of the Hawaiian language,” Crabbe said. “It is disappointing that the state government continues to place barriers on olelo Hawaii, 40 years after Hawaii’s constitution was amended to recognize the Hawaiian language as an official language of the state. We demand that the state Judiciary find an immediate solution to this issue.”

Hawai’i is more than a picture perfect sunset. It’s more than a vacation spot away from work. Kanaka Maoli (Native Hawaiians) are still facing blatant racism and suppression in 2018. This is oppressive action against the protesters. This is bullshit white supremacy in action. I don’t know how to directly help, so I’m spreading the word. We must all practice Malama ‘Aina. http://m.hawaiinewsnow.com/hawaiinewsnow/db/330510/content/YTPnUXB5

One of the reasons why I’ll happily defecate on RHPS, and why i’d shout into the void about it being transmisogynistic.

The creator of it is shit. The play is shit. The show is shit. Folks who contest how shitty the dude and his creation are can go fuck a butternut squash

And people scream at how it was such good representation..ummmohkay

Avengers: Age of Ultron co-stars Jeremy Renner and Chris Evans are in hot water today for some sexist and ableist comments they made about the film’s Black Widow character. Jokes they may have been, it’s hard to view these comments minus the context of the often sexist film and comic book industries. In light of this, Evans and Renner have issued apologies.

Apparently, everyone in the Tyler Seguin tag thinks that “fuckboy” is an appropriate thing to call someone.

Fuckboy originated in the 70s-80s from prison. It refers to transmen who are considered easy/slutty to the inmates for a quick fuck.

Stop it. Stop saying it. Stop using it. It’s very hurtful.

oh shit x x

Okay PSA yall don’t use this. I didn’t know this and I will stop now.

I humbly apologise for every time I have said this and hereby swear that I will never use it again.

OH, MY GOD if you fuckin think that TRANS PEOPLE get to go to the JAIL OF THE GENDER THEY TRANSITIONED TO in the FUCKING SEVENTIES then i have some serious news for you, we can barely ever get that shit now orange is the new black is NOT reality guys -TRANS PERSON its fuckin aave, shut the fuck up, stop fucking saying it for that if you’re white if ANYTHING good fUCKING LORD

AS IF APPROPRIATING OUR LINGO WASN’T ENOUGH, YOU NOW WANT TO BASTARDIZE ITS DEFINITIONS.

A FUCKBOY IS NOT A TRANSPERSON, GAY CIS MALE, RAPE VICTIM, OR SOME SHITTY FUCKING SKELETON, AS I HAVE ALL SEEN CLAIMED HERE ON TUMBLR.

A FUCKBOY IS A SHITTY ASS MALE. THIS IS SIMPLE. STOP CONTRIVING LANGUAGE YOU DON’T EVEN KNOW.

...yeah, uh, FORCED atheism among adults. *FORCED*. with actual destroying of churches and monasteries, stealing and/or destroying any and all holy remains and irreplaceble holy images centuries old, and, oh yeah, brutal murdering of monks, nuns and other members of the clergy/church.

this btw didn't do jackshit as far as actual religious belief was concerned. it just forced the majority of believers/churchgoers, ie. orthodox catholics, to go underground and meet in secrecy, and interestingly, also meant that it was mostly the women in communities (esp. in rural russia) that kept the rituals going, because there usually wasn't a priest around to officiate.

and this fact then meant that orthodoxy in a lot of rural areas in russia eventually mixed with a lot of folk spirituality/rituals, the variety of course depending on the area (siberian people believe differently than people closer to tibet/mongolia/china than people close to europe/in carelia aka former finnish areas so finnish/finno-ugric folk belief still happening, as well as in the areas with finno-ugric minorities like the mari people etc.)

tldr: nothing "just happens", especially in soviet russia. all statistics lie, ESPECIALLY IN SOVIET RUSSIA WHERE NOT CONFORMING MEANT DEATH. for FUCKS sake.

source: actual atheist (*wave*) with orthodox family roots, and a gender studies professor (who coached me and gave me full marks on my BA essay), who did her phd work on the belief systems/rituals/spirituality of carelian and finno-ugric women in rural russia, abt. ca. 1980-2010 (and as far as i know, she still keeps in touch with the communities she and her group studied).

ETA: i looked at the source, and i do not understand how you can get "managed to reach 90 percent atheism" from "The initial anti-religious campaign [...] was characterized by brutal terror tactics that killed thousands accompanied by legislation meant to deprive the Church of its capacity to function.".

so while the actual source is accurate, the *graphic* makes it sound like this is all fine and dandy because ooh nearly everyone is atheist! sigh. could we just not, okay?

Broomberg and Chanarin say their work, on show at Johannesburg’s Goodman Gallery, examines “the radical notion that prejudice might be inherent in the medium of photography itself”. They argue that early colour film was predicated on white skin: in 1977, when Jean-Luc Godard was invited on an assignment to Mozambique, he refused to use Kodak film on the grounds that the stock was inherently “racist”.

The light range was so narrow, Broomberg said, that “if you exposed film for a white kid, the black kid sitting next to him would be rendered invisible except for the whites of his eyes and teeth”. It was only when Kodak’s two biggest clients – the confectionary and furniture industries – complained that dark chocolate and dark furniture were losing out that it came up with a solution.

Makes perfect sense to me. The human eye always adjusts to see people’s faces but the technology of photography developed around adjusting to white people only. You can probably dig deeper and look at the cultural institution that developed around photography for what came to be accepted as “what the camera likes” and the aesthetics of palettes and light conditions and such for more normalization of racist standards. Same can probably be said of a great deal of Eurocentric art, aesthetics, and technology in general.

So glad someone identified this tendency. When I did photography, I found my POC friends impossible to light with the reccomendations given by most photography blogs and such. I also found no techniques on how to photograph people with darker skin tones because even DSLRS require different types of exposures for darker skin.

Are these people serious

Yep cause it’s true

Film is an inherently racist medium, which seems unfortunately to bemost discussed by white authors (Richard Dyer, though, does have a lot of good information in White)

But when Spike Lee has to come up with his own methods of cinematography to film black people, something is definitely wrong

Or when I show up as a dark blob in photos with my white friends, or when I’m the only one who’s face isn’t picked up by any recognition technology, then I’d say film and photography are definitely racist media

edit-

idk how much we should be taking cues on racism from JLG tbh

Also the filters that get used for photo editing (digital and otherwise). Like, I think loads of pictures are specially developed with this blue tone that really lightens people up (while also making everything look washed out). And all the common tutorials (both on tumblr and elsewhere) to improve the lighting/image quality of screencaps for edits and gifs are totally useless for darker skin tones. I wish there were better fandom resources for this shit because it’s fucking frustrating.

reblogging to add:

“Montré Aza Missouri, an assistant professor in film at Howard University, recalls being told by one of her instructors in London that “if you found yourself in the ‘unfortunate situation’ of shooting on the ‘Dark Continent,’ and if you’re shooting dark-skinned people, then you should rub Vaseline on their skin in order to reflect light. It was never an issue of questioning the technology.” In her classes at Howard, Missouri says, “I talk to my students about the idea that the tools used to make film, the science of it, are not racially neutral.”
Missouri reminds her students that the sensors used in light meters have been calibrated for white skin; rather than resorting to the offensive Vaseline solution, they need to manage the built-in bias of their instruments, in this case opening their cameras’ apertures one or two stops to allow more light through the lens. Filmmakers working with celluloid also need to take into account that most American film stocks weren’t manufactured with a sensitive enough dynamic range to capture a variety of dark skin tones. Even the female models whose images are used as reference points for color balance and tonal density during film processing — commonly called “China Girls” — were, until the mid-1990s, historically white.
In the face of such technological chauvinism, filmmakers have been forced to come up with workarounds, including those lights thrown on Poitier and a variety of gels, scrims and filters. But today, such workarounds have been rendered virtually obsolete by the advent of digital cinematography, which allows filmmakers much more flexibility both in capturing images and manipulating them during post-production.”

and from the original article:

The artists feel certain that the ID-2 camera and its boost button were Polaroid’s answer to South Africa’s very specific need. “Black skin absorbs 42% more light. The button boosts the flash exactly 42%,” Broomberg explained. “It makes me believe it was designed for this purpose.”
In 1970 Caroline Hunter, a young chemist working for Polaroid in America, stumbled upon evidence that the company was effectively supporting apartheid. She and her partner Ken Williams formed the Polaroid Workers Revolutionary Movement and campaigned for a boycott. By 1977 Polaroid had withdrawn from South Africa, spurring an international divestment movement that was crucial to bringing down apartheid.
The title of the exhibition, To Photograph the Details of a Dark Horse in Low Light, refers to the coded phrase used by Kodak to describe a new film stock created in the early 1980s to address the inability of earlier films to accurately render dark skin.
The show also features norm reference cards that always used white women as a standard for measuring and calibrating skin tones when printing photographs. The series of “Kodak Shirleys” were named after the first model featured. Today such cards show multiple races.

I’ve posted information about this before, and I want to reblog it again because it’s so important.

People really need to understand what it means that racism is built into so many of our technologies, our education, our lives…too many people seem to believe that racism is about feelings and interactions.

A lot of the photos I have posted of artworks are old photographs that use films that oversaturate dark skin tones or blast them out with contrast. They need to be modified where possible in order for dark skinned people portrayed in the paintings to be visible at all.

soooo i might be contemplating doing something completely insane

like finishing my english translation degree

that i started right outta high school (LIKE A DECADE AGO JESUS) and did for a year - very lazily i might add and then raegquit because i do not do things like grammar rules.

but

- i could study in helsinki (it wasn't in helsinki when i started so that added in the quitting - i HATED the small town i had to live in, ugh) - the work is INDEPENDENT (if i graduate some day and maybe get a job etc. etc.) and freelancing and SETTING MY OWN WORK HOURS and fucking WRITING AND PROOFREADING WHICH GUESS WHAT I FUCKING DO ALREADY - i clearly have some potential since i got in the first place and did the year, albeit struggling with some courses but um duh that's why it's edumacatin' and not shit-i-already-know (yeah this has taken me a decade to learn) - will not take me for-fucking-ever since i have previous studies plus i know how to study in the finnish university system now (LIKE THE WIND) (TAKE ALL THE BOOK EXAMS)

i swore that i would never ever return to study translation, but i was like nineteen, what the fuck do i know at nineteen. so yeah. we'll see.
