Today I was denied a renewal of my US Passport and told I would need to get a judge to unseal child welfare records from Foster care in order to “prove” my US Citizenship. Despite having had all “Female” ID since 1999, they are now demanding “Proof of Transition” for the 1st time
Other important notes: 1. I have already showed them a birth certificate with my current legal name (which it has been since 1999) and my legal gender as “Female”. They claim this is not the “original” because I had previous names. The “original” documents no longer exist.

Check her longer thread here (x) – she is a human rights defender fleeing imminent, documented threats of violence in Seattle, and says she’s likely been targeted specifically because of her political work and being high-profile in the local area. This is dangerous bullshit, it’s important and a possibility for any trans person to face, but it’s also a specific political situation that won’t automatically be the case for every trans person.
This is the government targeting and endangering a Human Rights Defender, unlawfully interfering with her safety, travel, and privacy – not necessarily a broader policy change. Yet.
