Okay but for anyone who legit wants to know how to calculate it correctly:

The elbow joint on average rests a couple inches higher than the navel, so if you measure how long the distance is from the middle of the shoulder to that point then you have the length of the upper and fore arms!

So if anyone’s wondering about legs too, the simplest rule of thumb is that the length from the top of the leg to the knee is equal to the distance between the top of the leg and the bottom of the pectorals:

And I wanna stress that when i say “top of the leg” i’m not talking about the crotch (please don’t flag me tumblr it’s an anatomical term) i’m talking about the point where the femur connects to the pelvis, which is higher up on the hips:

It’s easier to see what I’m talking about in this photo of a man squatting:

So yeah if you use that measurement when using this technique you should get fairly realistically proportioned legs:

But remember! messing with proportions is an important and fun part of character design! Know the rules first so you can then break them however you please!

HOW THE HELL DID I FIND THIS POST OMG

Oh hey, there’s more helpful hints since I saw this last

THIS IS SUPER HELPFUL. especially the hand one.

I’ve translated the ones that aren’t in English! (at least the ones in the main photoset, my Chinese isn’t good and I’m too tired from doing those translations to sit and decipher some of the characters that are blurry haha sorry)

under the cut because it got really long:

Weekly anatomy tip!

This week I tackle feet. I know how many of you asked for it.

It is hard topic indeed. It’s hard to draw nice looking character with feet that doesn’t look believable.

A lot practice is needed. I just presented few ideas and now you have to put it to practice.

Hope this helps !

Hey. I’m gonna break down how to draw a Black/African/Dark Skinned person’s lips.

Hello! In celebration of a new year, I’m gonna show all of you a tip how to draw lips for Black/African/Dark Skinned people.

If you’re drawing a black/dark skinned person, the top lip is a slight step above or below their actual skin tone while the bottom lip can range from a faded pink to brown.

Black/African men’s and women’s lip lean towards “nude/palm of the hand” makeup color. Some cases it’s pink but everyone’s lip color varies from pink to brown. In my experience of going outside my house, the darker the person, the pinker the bottom lip is while the lighter brown skin lips will be closer to their actual skin tone.

Another note is that the pink /brown tone on the bottom of the lip is near the slit of the mouth, not the complete lip like lipstick makeup. Try adding different tones to a lip and blending both top and bottom lips together because everyone’s different! A very good detail to remember.

TL;DR: USE A REFERENCE. GOOGLE IMAGE SEARCH DOESN’T BITE! Thank you for your time! Go out and draw them awesome dark skinned characters and people!

Ho would you draw shoulders from the side? I've always struggled with that.

Avatar

I’ve been thinking about it too, and honestly it’s quite troublesome to think about. I never really thought about how I draw it, I just improvise until it looks believable. However, I did notice there is a trick for it…

Okay so here’s the body, right? Ignore the obvious anatomy errors, I’m lazy and tired at the moment, but the idea should be clear. Think of the shoulder as ball-jointed doll. Draw the circle in the motion of the body as the base and…

Bam! Put a teardrop around it! I love teardrops as guidelines so much. I don’t think I have to explain it, do I? I think it speaks for itself; rotate the teardrop and the shoulder should follow it. Use it as a guideline and eventually you won’t have to use it anymore, it’ll be there mentally. I do, however, reccomend you pose in front of the mirror to get more correct results on how the lines will bend with the muscles. Just stand in front of the mirror and move your shoulders around, notice what muscles follows and etc.

If you need any more help with this, let me know.

Tuesday Tips - Watch Your Mouth (new tip, which will be included in 100 Tuesday Tips Volume 2, available next year. The first volume is finally back in stock in our Etsy shop.) Even without language, we communicate a lot with the shape of our mouth (lips, mouth corners, teeth, …) Like all facial features, its complexities can be simplified, but a good understanding of it all is a must! -Norm #100tuesdaytips #100tuesdaytipsgrizandnormbook #watchyourmouth #grizandnorm #arttips #arttutorial #disneyartist

Anonymous said: I know you’ve shown how you draw faces from different angles very briefly before, but I was wondering if you’d ever go more in depth? For example, I always struggle with drawing the eyes at a ¾ angle… 😔

Ok, I get this question so many times that I decided to do something about it. I’ve already made a tutorial about drawing eyes and tbh it should help with drawing eyes from any angle, the tricky part is to understand the human face, its anatomy. If you see the face/head as a three dimentional object you’ll be able to draw it, I can’t say it enough, 3D thinking is important. Also, references are important, drawing from life is important because then you have a 3D model of the head right in a front of you. All you need to do is observe and understand.
