Okay but for anyone who legit wants to know how to calculate it correctly:

The elbow joint on average rests a couple inches higher than the navel, so if you measure how long the distance is from the middle of the shoulder to that point then you have the length of the upper and fore arms!

So if anyone’s wondering about legs too, the simplest rule of thumb is that the length from the top of the leg to the knee is equal to the distance between the top of the leg and the bottom of the pectorals:

And I wanna stress that when i say “top of the leg” i’m not talking about the crotch (please don’t flag me tumblr it’s an anatomical term) i’m talking about the point where the femur connects to the pelvis, which is higher up on the hips:

It’s easier to see what I’m talking about in this photo of a man squatting:

So yeah if you use that measurement when using this technique you should get fairly realistically proportioned legs:

But remember! messing with proportions is an important and fun part of character design! Know the rules first so you can then break them however you please!

HOW THE HELL DID I FIND THIS POST OMG

Oh hey, there’s more helpful hints since I saw this last

Anonymous asked:

Do you have any advice on legs??? Specifically how to handle the transition between the lower torso to beginning of leg? And even more specifically, how to go about accurately drawing clothes on a pair of legs???

hi anon! sorry it took so long to get back to you but here’s the simple n dirty way of how i do it:

Anonymous asked:

by any chance could you do a lil tutorial/process of how you draw limbs in different poses? esp. legs/thighs, your legs always look so jaunty and charming i love it but i never know what to, ,, ,,, do with mine, like where to put them so

Okay! I’m going to try to answer this best I can, but before I do, please remember I am just a humble animation student and by no means a professional artist or a seasoned expert, so this might not be the correct way to do things or be extremely accurate. This is just how I do it, and a couple tips I’ve picked up from teachers at school.

First of all, getting familiar with the anatomy of legs helps a lot! (I know this is the dreaded answer to every art question) I don’t know too much about the muscles of the legs other than the basics, so I don’t talk about them here because I don’t want to look like an idiot. They’re very worth studying though, especially the muscles that form the inside of the thigh and back of the calf.

Those are some leg studies I did from life in class last year, with the key parts labelled.

Chances are you’ve tried to draw legs and??

Unless you’re going for a certain style, legs that look like straight tubes or 90 degree angles are gonna look a bit weird.

As you can see with the life drawings above, legs have certain natural curves and rhythms to them! None of the bones in the legs are straight or tubular, so your legs should not be either.

Sorry for the really mediocre pelvis it’s not my strong suit oh god. It’s easy to characterize the legs as something like this:

Remembering that the knee is a hinge joint and that it has a sort of curved offset from the upper leg to the lower leg really helps.

So when you keep that offset in mind and apply some curves over the muscle and fat layered on top of those BEAUTIFULLY RHYTHMIC bones, you get dynamic flow in your legs. The hip (trochanter), kneecap (patella) and ankle (fibula/tibia malleolus) are good landmarks to keep in mind.

So by applying some curves, you get a softer/more dynamic/rhythmic feel to the legs that makes your figure look a lot less static even if they are standing entirely still. It’s also worth noting most people shift their weight onto one hip or another, position their feet weirdly, etc etc.

Hope that helps!

style guide for the sculptural aesthetics we were going for~ Sculptors like Georg Kolbe, Giacomo Manzu, and of course the amazing Kent Melton were sources of inspiration.. I also looked at painters like Enoch Bolles and Pete Hawley who also stylize plane changes and simplify their work when they render with light..

Reblogging this not only for artists but also for people who write werewolf (and other animal transformation) fiction.  If a human turned into a wolf, their knee joints would not reverse— what some fic writers mistake for the knee is actually the ankle.  A wolf’s hind feet are relatively long, and they are always walking in way roughly analogous to human “tip-toeing.”

heyo! don’t worry, your english turned out fine, dude.

as a foreword of warning, it is best that you don’t use this post as a standalone tutorial,  instead, try to use it as a study aid to help you make sense of real-life references. (same applies for any decent “art tutorial” out there, really. :p)

bolded numbers correspond to the numbers on this post’s pictures.

my dear friend Jessi (lilylilymine) whom i really admire told me she liked the way i draw legs (thank you, btw!) and asked if i would do a tutorial. i feel a little weird having never done a tutorial before, and i don’t feel like i have the authority to really teach anyone about art, but i can’t deny Jessi. ;)

i’m not sure if i have anything particularly revolutionary or exciting to say…i’m sure i missed a lot of important stuff. i guess it’s mostly just an insight into how i personally like to draw legs, so take it with a grain of salt. :)
