Imagine Xie Lian wanting to work for Hua Cheng in paradise manor thinking it was a brothel—after burning it down, he has to pay the money somehow, right???

Hua Cheng actually agrees with the offer, but doesn't take it far. Xie Lian then is actually offended because he thinks Hua Cheng rejected him, and now he's doing is best to seem more pleasing.

This is a battle between Xie Lian's lust and Hua Cheng's self control.

After their wedding, Hua Cheng and Xie Lian disguise themselves to spend their honeymoon in the mortal realm.

As an expert in shape shifting, Hua Cheng's appearance is handsome but discreet. Xie Lian, however looks almost the same.

It doesn't take long before eventually the gods see Xie Lian "making out with someone else" and everyone starts believing they broke up or that he's cheating on the ghost.

Bai Wuxiang's human face disease was different from Xie Lian's.

The Calamity's curse was a disease and had these qualities:

  • Infects the body.
  • Not always deadly.
  • People who have killed are immune.
  • Target: anyone else.

Xie Lian's curse was a weapon and had these qualities:

  • Eats the body.
  • Deadly.
  • People who have killed can be affected (the target was Lang Ying, then Xie Lian himself, ultimately taken by Wu Ming).
  • Target: anyone.

It would all have been easier for Xie Lian if his original target was available. He wanted to kill Lang Ying, not the common people, that is why BWX's plan went shit.

Because his original revenge plan was ruined, he got insecurities about his "evil path" and tried to convince himself that commoners were a good next target... which was not.

I wrote a short story based on this analysis. "The night of the beautiful crime."

The night of the beautiful crime

Jun Wu always loved writing stories.

When he was young and naive, his Guoshi constantly told him his stories were too perfect to be believable; that conflict was part of what made life interesting.

Bai Wuxiang knows manipulation is an art.

Just like writing stories, you control your subject’s life, and guide them to do what you desire.

In order to get someone to do what you want them to do, you must make them believe it was their idea. You may guide them a little, but they mustn't know.

Compelling someone to commit an atrocity is like making them an addict to a drug.

You start with little, inoffensive and redeemable acts.

Make them enjoy it.

Make them crave for more.

The prince of Wuyong was never taught to see the future, but it always haunted him. Not because of something mild like anxiety, but because it forced its way into his life through dreams.

A gift that haunted him forever, and now is finally giving him a useful warning.

He can’t force Xie Lian to kill innocent people. Not yet.

The prince has yet to drink in the beauty of the crimson tapestry that trails in the wake of demise. He doesn’t see the grim beauty of commanding respect from a throne of skulls. The chanting that comes with screams hasn’t yet reached his ears.

In a future where the king of Yong’An isn’t available as a vessel for the Human Face disease, he’s out of acceptable targets; turning in the loss of Jun Wu’s desired heir.

That won’t happen now.

The king of Yong’an is unmoved by the arriving presence. “You’ve come to kill me?”

Xie Lian speaks like ice. “I’ve come to punish you.”

That night, Xie Lian discovers a new feeling when the king’s screams become the only instrument in a song he’s never heard before.

The smiling side of the mask matches the expression in his true face.
