Benedict says David Bowie is the person he’d most like to play onscreen.
Wonder why.

“When Granada Holmes captures Sidney Paget illustrations perfectly..” but ALSO makes sure Holmes has his Watson at his side, while Watson waxes lyrical about Holmes’s languid, dreamy eyes
Is this why we're like this, is this why literally everyone tries to deduce people after watching this show, is this why no one who watches sherlock can't get involved... they're manipulating us omfg.
i’m like 95% sure this is what’s going on lmao
SHERLOCK: The Van Buren Supernova, so-called. (He holds up his phone over his shoulder so that Miss Wenceslas can see the screen.) Exploding star, only appeared in the sky in eighteen fifty-eight. (He turns and throws her a triumphant look, then walks away. John drags in a relieved breath, then walks closer to look at the painting.) JOHN: So how could it have been painted in the sixteen forties?
So the little old man in Argentina commissioned to paint the fake Vermeer used the oldest possible photograph he could find of the night sky over Delft (where Vermeer lived and worked), in an attempt to depict a 1640s-ish scene—and had the misfortune of using a photographic reference which outed him thanks to a precisely-datable astronomical event.
Except there’s no such thing as the “Van Buren Supernova.” Gatiss invented it specifically for this scene. But no big deal, right? Writers are entitled to creative license, they obviously have to make some things up in the process of writing a good story!
It’s just, well, I become suspicious when a writer invents a fictional event as a plot point, yet a real event already took place which would have fitted his purposes perfectly.
There may have been no “Van Buren Supernova” in 1858, but there was a remarkable astronomical event that year: Comet Donati, first observed in June of 1858, and noted as the most brilliant comet of the 19th century after The Great Comet of 1811. Obviously, this begs the question of “why?” What reason is there to use Comet Donati of 1858 as the definitive clue to the final pip, yet rename it “the Van Buren Supernova?”
The only connection I could find between astronomy, supernovas, and the name Van Buren was the existence of a David Van Buren, who works for NASA … Deeper research, however, revealed Van Buren as the name of a British-born “magician, illusionist and showman who is also well known as a builder and magical inventor.”
It turns out Fred Van Buren’s claim to fame is a trick known as the “Vanishing Motorbike and Rider,” which is significant for having been one of the earliest large-scale illusions performed while surrounded by an audience on all sides. As Wikipedia claims:
Another great influence on Van Buren’s career occurred when he saw a performance by Ali Bey in Blackpool in 1948. Ali Bey did much of this performance on ice but for some illusions he retired to a theatrical backdrop because the particular items could not be performed surrounded. It was then that Fred decided that the future lay in illusions that could be performed anywhere, with the audience on all sides and with no possibility of effects being accomplished by the aid of trapdoors. What was Sherlock’s fall from the roof of St Bart’s, but exactly this? “It’s a trick. Just a magic trick.”
lol I wrote this two years ago as part of a meta on Countdown to Johnlock, and originally speculated that Mark had heard about Van Buren from Derren Brown just from, like, bros sharing trade secrets, but if Derren Brown has been at least peripherally involved since the BEGINNING, I’M GONNA LOSE IT
Mary’s DVD like: oh sherlock honey, I’ll help you, here’s a hint: if you want to save John Watson, just die already :))) I’m helping you sweetie :)) I’m being such a good friend :))
I KNOW
Jesus Christ my heart SOMEONE FIC THIS IMMEDIATELY

I REALLY hope this is a ‘special’ friend of Sherlock’s. #MakeJohnJellybean2016
I want this man, whoever he is, to be involved in a case and for John to see Sherlock fumble over his own words after this man flirts with him. Like Irene flirting with John and Sherlock fumbling, this time this man is GAY and HOT for Sherlock and Sherlock’s all blinking eyes and gurgling syllables.
“Sherlock, mate, what the hell?”
“I’m a man, John. I’m not free from the basic impulses of my transport.”
“What?!”
“For God’s sake, John, I’m not BLIND.”
Yes, @the-7-percent-solution, yes!! That’s all I need. That’s all I want.
With all the maritime scenes in recent setlock… what if Leonard turns out to be a sailor 👀 👀 👀
That’s it. That’s what’s happening. Sherlock, the nice girl, is going to like a sailor. I have no doubt. Bring it.
someone needs to tell sherlock he is already worthy of john
uhhh!!!! john’s gonna do that! hol ysHI t
moffat like ‘allow me to explicitly state in no uncertain terms that there will be no more victorian’ 100% means THE VICTORIANS ARE DEFINITELY KISSING
AN ENTIRE MONTAGE OF SHERLOCK AND JOHN KISSING BOTH IN REAL LIFE AND WHEN SHERLOCK INEVITABLY LOSES IT AND RETREATS INTO HIS MIND AND KISSES EVERY JOHN HIDDEN IN THERE TOO
READ THIS IN A STEVEN MOFFAT VOICE AND THEN READ IT AGAIN IN A MARK GATISS VOICE:

Apparently the line ‘I find this difficult, this sort of thing’ was something Martin said while they were trying to shoot John talking to Sherlock’s grave. Mark liked it, and wrote it into TEH. I just love that. Don’t you love that?
so they’re filming the same scene with and without the lady in red present so we can assume she’s some sort of mind palace/imaginary friend situation…. lady in red……….. red….beard?
