Kathryn and Chakotay have found a way to make reading through all those boring status reports slightly less tedious :)
“The True Meaning of Peace” - a speculative mood board
Who confesses late at night “I’m sorry I’m the worst person ever”, who presses a kiss to their forehead and whispers, “it’s okay, you’re trying your best”
@fbismostunwanted1158, that’s one I really, really love. And it’s kinda obvious who’s who.
She glanced at the chronometer. Damn! She was late. Later than late. That meeting couldn’t have run any slower. Kathryn raced through the halls and rounded the corner straight into Will Riker. “Woah, Kathryn! Where’s the red alert?,” he caught her by the shoulders. Her hands came up to halt his train of thought. Riker was long winded and she had no time to strike up a conversation now. “I’m missing my husband’s birthday dinner. For the fourth year in a row. If you’ll please excuse me, I’ll see you at the briefing tomorrow,” and with that, she patted his shoulder and returned to her sprint for her office. “Sure thing! Wish the old man a happy birthday for me, will you?,” he grinned. “Be careful, Riker. You’re just as old as the rest of us. But, I’ll be sure to relay the message,” she called to him as she stepped into the lift. Horrible. She hadn’t been there for any of Chakotay’s celebrations since they’d returned from the Delta Quadrant. Shaking off her frustration, she flew from the lift, gathered her things from her desk, and ordered a transport. As she approached the door to the apartment, she heard the voice of Tom Paris. She began to key in the door code when it opened on its own. Tom stepped aside and let her in. “Speak of the devil! Here’s the greatest present of them all, Chakotay!,” Tom called up the stairs. Kathryn pulled him into a hug. “Sorry we couldn’t stay later. Harry had to be back at Starfleet, Seven and the Doc had a transport to catch, and B'Elanna took the youngest partygoer home an hour ago. Let’s set up a lunch date sometime? Miral misses her Aunt Kathryn,” Tom’s smile almost broke her heart. Everyone had been together again and she missed it. “Of course. Thank you for keeping Chakotay company. He loves seeing all of you. Sorry I couldn’t be here as well. Take care of that beautiful girl of mine,” she waved to him as he made his exit. “Always, Admiral,” Tom saluted back at her as he walked down the hallway. Kathryn pressed her forehead against the door after closing it. The guilt was so heavy, it felt like it was suffocating her. Chakotay always dropped everything for her. The least she could do was show up for his damned birthday once in a great while. Her feet got heavier as she climbed the stairs. Reaching the bedroom, she heard the shower running. She took off her uniform and changed into her nightgown. Playing through her apology in her head, she laid down on her side to wait for him to join her. She opened her eyes to a dark room. Oh, God. She’d fallen asleep! She turned over to see Chakotay snoring lightly on his back. She wanted the Earth to swallow her whole. “Chakotay,” she whispered. She shifted closer and placed feather light kisses all over his face. He startled awake and attempted to focus on the face inches from his. “Kathryn? What?,” his sleepy eyes filled with confusion. She sighed and brushed her fingers through the hair at the top of his head. “I’m so sorry. I am the worst wife. Missing your birthday. Again,” she punctuated every sentence with a peck on the lips. He ran his hands up her back to cup her shoulders and smiled warmly. “You’re busy. You do your best. I love you. No matter where you are on my birthday. Or any day. As long as I know you are coming home to me. Eventually,” they both chuckled as he pulled her in to kiss her forehead. She snuggled down and rested her head on his shoulder. He rubbed his hand up and down her back, lulling them both back to sleep. Just as Chakotay was about to nod off again, Kathryn mumbled into his chest. “Oh. Will Riker told me to wish you a happy birthday,” her eyes still closed. “Mmmhmm,” he grunted. “And he called you ‘old’,” she huffed out a small laugh. After letting the words process, Chakotay cracked open one eye. “Isn’t he a year older than I am?,” he attempted to crunch the numbers in his head. The only answer to be heard were Kathryn’s gentle snores.
it was so sweet, thank you for posting it!
