This is exactly what happened in this scene and i cannot be convinced otherwise
Usually I don't bring my non-digital drawings here, but it's time for an exception.
What I’m getting at here is that everyone on Voyager is freakishly overqualified. They are all so much better at their jobs than everyone else in Starfleet and through a trick of ‘the writing actually being half-way decent’ no one has really called Voyager out on this. Ask yourself; what is Janeway’s scientific specialty? Because as far as I can tell it’s ‘everything plus a little medical’. Also she’s a decent engineer and the third? fourth? best pilot on the ship? Also she’s an excellent marksman. Also she mentions having studied several languages apparently for the fun of it. Singlehanded she’s probably the most skilled normal human (non Borg, non-augmented, etc.) in the franchise. (Edit: Also computer programming!)
Is it any surprise then that B’Elanna just is the franchise’s best engineer? You have a problem with it take it up with 1994’s Star Trek Voyager because they pulled this shit in the 90s. They made B’Elanna way better at her job than everyone else and if you have a problem with that talk to Rick Berman.
