Voyager Book Club - First Briefing

Hey everyone! 

I thought I’d make a post outlining my plan for this endeavour, so we can all be on the same page. (See what I did there? Prepare for puns.;) )  

For every novel I will plan a month. I picked the 20th as a repeating deadline since we know that Kathryn’s birthday is on May 20th and I needed something I could remember. ;)

The idea is that we all take a month to read each book, come up with ideas to discuss and basically just find some people we can chat to about what happened to our favourite crew after their return to Earth. I am personally a pretty hardcore Janeway/Chakotay shipper, so there might be a focus on those two, or in general the personal relationships and how they develop. 

I’m also going to link to fanfiction and fanart that is set in the post-Endgame universe. And I sure hope for the development of some stellar memes! If anyone feels up to the task of creating some sort of header for  us that would also be rad. I’m pretty incompetent when it comes to that. 

For now I’ve decided to stick to tumblr. Mainly so we all wouldn’t have to deal with another platform and since we already have tumblr, it seemed convenient. But I’ll keep checking out other options. Thank you to everyone who has made suggestions so far! 

I hope this works for everyone. If life should become too stressful to keep up, that’s fine. This isn’t meant to feel like homework but just to be fun. I am just super excited to get this show on the road!!

If you actually feel like doing this, let’s get going with this gem that literally starts a short moment after Endgame ended. I thought about starting with “Full Circle” but this is a lot less traumatizing. 😉

I wanna see what everyone thinks and DEFINITELY gush about Janeway/Chakotay, cause really, that’s my main purpose in life. ;)

I’m still not over the finale of Voyager. Probably never will be.

The last 6-8 episodes of season seven were so hard to watch. Gone were the Janeway/Chakotay scenes that were so amazing throughout the series. I mean even if they were going to bring out a new love interest for one of them they shouldn’t have discounted the connection those two characters had for the last seven years. Have a few scenes with them acknowledging their close friendship even if it isn’t a romantic one. (Altho it should have been).

I just don’t get it. It was such a sudden ending. No resolution to these characters that we followed for seven years of their life. Except that they are back home. But that’s not much comfort.

Sorry…rambling again. This may go on for a few days.

I need fic recommendations to make me feel better about this ending. Anyone?!

Feel better about it how? By explaining it away, or adding to it, or changing it? Cuz there’s a plethora of all three.

My little one-shot, based on the image that LO’s fic above brought out for me, because this is my headcanon for what happened with J/C.

The Bitter End by @mia-cooper (M)

I mean, really, all three fics that Mia has written in the unaltered Endgame timeline are excellent, but this one is a masterpiece. Definitely heed the warnings—it’s tough, tough stuff. But if you’re looking for a more solid explanation behind the Admiral’s motives than what she gave to Captain Janeway, this is the best one I’ve read.

My running collection of drabbles, several of which follow my headcanon for their relationship between the lines of what is seen on screen. These aren’t nearly as dark as the other fics I just listed.

Lovely (and sexy!) little piece that fits in with the Counterpoint Vignettes but can stand alone. Jumps back and forth between KJ’s and C’s perspectives, giving such poignant insight into each character’s thoughts.

Last Goodbyes by @missmil (T)

Lovely, angsty, emotional, romantic, vivid imagery… these are the whole package.

Counterplay by Amalgamoo (T)

This is a multi-chapter written by someone who watched ‘Endgame’ for the first time and took out her frustrations by rewriting the whole episode. It’s fucking brilliant. I read this and automatically decided that this is how it should have gone. So so good.

Things You Shouldn’t Be by @lodessa (E)

Really, all of Smut Khaleesi’s Admiral KJ fics are worth reading, but this one is my favorite. I just love fics that explore the overlap of passion between love and anger. This takes place after AKJ has her talk with Seven about how her death will affect Chakotay. Chakotay goes to confront AKJ about it, and… well… we don’t call Lodessa the Smut Khaleesi for nothing. 😉

Great one-shot that reverses the roles of KJ and C in ‘Endgame’ so that he goes back instead. Angsty as hell, but so beautiful.

I follow the journey of that lovely pocket watch Chakotay gave to Kathryn for her birthday in 'Year of Hell,’ except this is what happens in the reset timeline.

Moving Mountains by me (G)

Short little ficlet that shifts one or two details from the 'Endgame’ episode so that it makes more sense and ends the way it should have.

This list doesn’t even scratch the surface of what’s out there. And I’m not huge on straight fluff, so I’m not sure how happy these will make you feel, lol. But it’s a start. We have an entire sub-genre of 'Endgame fix-it’ fics for this very reason.
