I don't know what was more heart-breaking...

Grog whimpering, pleading "fix him" while holding Scanlan's broken body.
I think that really highlights the difference in expectations regarding death and resurrection in TLOVM vs. CR.
In CR, resurrection isn't guaranteed to succeed, but it's always possible. With enough determination, any death can be reversed. Grog can demand to fix him, because that's a demand that can be fulfilled!
But in TLOVM, resurrection isn't really a thing! It doesn't take a diamond and a spell, it takes a genuine miracle. Grog can't just demand that Scanlan be fixed and expect it to work. So a big, strong man is reduced to begging.

i was just gonna post the percy doodle page but i really wanna share this other doodle i made, though not digitalized because im lazy
so in the original campaign percy was only dead for a day and vm killed ripley pretty quickly, meaning the old fans are just as in the dark about what's gonna happen next with them as the new fans!
but as a balm to everything that happened this week i wanna post the original scene immediately following percy's resurrection, because it's a cute character moment on multiple people's part

okay 1) have many emotions about this
2) the temptation to try and play that to see what it sounds like is very strong rn
it's not, but it does seem to be following best practice for writing sheet music (and i mean as someone who did a music minor with a compo teacher who was very strict about that shit, like, this is very close to being grade-worthy), which does suggest this is not the animators making stuff up
still working my way through the song, i'll let people know when im done
i had to remove one 8th rest in measure 7 because that was making the bar 4.5 beats long, but otherwise yeah this whole thing is pretty sound! (i also cut the crossed out section bc it's a repeat of a previous bar and lengthened the last note so it didn't sound weird, but that's not really changing anything). it sounds like it's just the melody for the lyrics, it could definitely use backing, but it is musically coherent
if people would like to listen to a musescore mock-up here it is!
(or the sheet music if anyone would like it in a more legible form)
if this does get played in the show i'm interested what it's going to be played on though
because like scanlan can play all sorts, but kaylie's signature instrument is the violin
which, speaking as a violinist, is not capable of playing this! it's too low 😂 (and i doubt a flute fares much better)
but i'll be keeping an eye out for it!

I finished my rewatch/relisten of the Vox Machina campaign in mid-December (although I recently re-embarked on the second half of the Chroma Conclave arc hoping season 3 of TLVOM will be announced (released?? 🤞) by the time I reach "A Bard's Lament"). Predictably, I bawled, AGAIN, but by then I'd already been scribbling and sketching ideas for this for... a couple of weeks? Hence the little WIP preview last month.
I'll never shut up about this moment. It's just as beautiful as it's heartbreaking, in- and off-game, especially taking into account all the context of characters/people involved.
Also, bonus, because after I finished sketching that 6th frame I thought a hug was needed.

#look there's been many incredible moments in cr. but in my opinion nothing has topped the sheer weight of this one.#like. sam had a secret plan bc sam always has a secret plan#he's a really clever player and scanlan thrives on being able to pull out something crazy in the nick of time#and throughout this fight he is SO careful and SO clever#he's constantly maneuvering himself to perfectly block vecna's attacks without matt realising#but he uses his 7th level countering vecna's feeblemind on marisha - bc if they lose keyleth they lose the fight#his 8th counters vecna's banishment on pike and grog#bc if they lose grog they don't have all the trammels and their ability to banish vecna goes way down#and then there's the teleport. and sam hasn't even told everyone his secret plan but he knows he can't use his 9th#bc he needs to use that wish after this fight but before the raven queen comes for vax for this to work - he cannot wait another day#but teleport is 7th level. if he counters with any other remaining spell slot it's gonna come down to a dice roll#a single roll where if you lose vecna wins the whole world. and even then he asks. is it worth it.#they don't know the actual question they're answering but it's 'is saving the world worth losing vax'. and of course vax would say yes#but there's a moment where everyone is celebrating that scanlan still had a 9th level. and no one's realised yet why sam is mourning#and it KILLS me#cr1#scanlan shorthalt#vax'ildan#c1e114#art

We traveled into the fucking Nine Hells to get Pike a suit of armor. We went and battled a city of vampires so Percy could feel good about his name. We fought goliaths for Grog. We’ve traveled across planes of existence so you could fix your fucking daddy issues. But you’ve never done anything for me. Ever! You’ve never risked anything, you don’t know me, you don’t know anything about me. What’s my mother’s name?
#once more the differences between the campaign and the show fascinate me#like with percy being much darker last season and more willingly going along with it all#here it feels like the show is trying to validate scanlan's perspective#and like. sam sure made an impression in 85 but scanlan in c1 was wrong#vox machina had repeatedly offered to help him or to talk and every time he turned them down or dodged the question#he deflected and deflected and deflected and then blamed them for never reaching his heart#and he does eventually realise he was wrong#it's part of why he comes back#but if scanlan in the show is actually right - if they do deserve everything he has to sling at them - does he have any reason to return?#im so curious#scanlan shorthalt#cr1#gifs
so scanlan's stuff in lovm made me think of 109 again, and, are people who haven't seen c1 aware of sam's fucking insane rap he wrote in literally two minutes on stream?
like, i can't clip this entire scene and how funny it is (it's at least half an hour long and full of gems start to finish, i highly recommend it if you don't mind the occasional spoiler), but suffice to say in this part vax is attempting to prank scanlan by dropping a love potion in his drink and seeing what happens (sam is very aware of this and loving the dramatic irony but scanlan is not)
and you can watch sam write it, once liam has the idea he starts penning stuff, checks back into the scene about two minutes later, and then once vax returns to the group gives us this
and you can see the cast all going what the fuck too, because sam has some kind of demon pact for music talent i swear
and just. this episode man. highlight of c1

ohhhh i have so many emotions now
because this is one of those scenes where i see it and immediately go "oh i've been there!"
but the mental scene it's matching is not from this part of c1
it's grog and percy, doing this same thing, in this exact place, after scanlan leaves
(also known as one of the top five tear my heart out percy moments, with him just quietly but anxiously going "you know you're family, right? it's... nice, having an older brother again")

cr2 and cr3 only people really have such a skewed view of vox machina. why do you keep talking about them like theyre dignified all powerful heroes and goofiness is beneath them? one of them canonically takes shits on peoples beds in order to spy on them. another is a half-giant with an intelligence of six who eats mayo out of a keg and got his soul sucked out of him, NOT ONCE, NOT TWICE, BUT THRICE. the other jumped off a cliff and turned into a goldfish just to splatter on a rock. one got given a witch hat when she obtained her broom as a joke but she was so endeared by the gift she wears it every time she's on the broom.
