Strung Out Photographs (A Billy Moran Fanfic)- Chapter 5

A/N: Hey look I’m not dead

BILLY’S P.O.V

She had a beautiful laugh.

She had a beautiful laugh, and she didn’t even realize it.

It was Monday now, and Rob, Stephen, Mike and I were sitting in Rob’s studio basement, trying to write music for a new song.

“Not to come off as a stalker, but do you live in California?” I asked Carver. It was around the end of the convention, and Rob and Rich were currently on stage doing their Kings of Con panel. Carver had come back to the green room apparently done with taking pictures for the weekend.

“Not stalker-ish in the slightest. Yeah, near Studio City, actually.”

Carver and I were sitting on the couch, typing to each other on my laptop as she was editing photos with hers.

“Hey, I’m not too far from there, maybe I can see you around sometime?”

“I don’t know, if you’re lucky.” She gave me a wink before turning back to her own laptop. I could feel my own face going bright red. What the hell have I gotten myself into?

“Billy! Billy! Billy! Billy!” I could hear a voice yell.

“Huh, what?”

“Dude you’ve been staring off into space with a smile on your face for like 5 solid minutes.” said Stephen, sitting back down behind the drum set.

“Sorry, sorry. Mind just all over the place today I guess.” I tried to brush it off like it was nothing, but I was apparently too easy to read.

“Someone’s thinking about Carver.” said Mike in a sing song voice. My head whipped up, just now noticing Rob had left the room at some point.

“I… I have no idea what you’re talking about.” I said, looking down at my guitar.

“Oh, come on. The two of you were attached by the hip for what seemed like the entire weekend!” said Mike. I glanced at Stephen for some help.

“Sorry Billy, gotta be with Mike on this one.” he said, laughing.

“Don’t you guys find it weird though, especially you Mike? You’ve known Rob for what, twenty years? And he never even mentions her.”

“Which is why you gotta be really careful if you decide to pursue this.” said Mike.

“What are you talking about?”

“You’re exactly right, I’ve known Rob for twenty years and he never mentions her. I just met her for the first time too. Which means, they don’t have a good relationship, or something happened between the two of them at least. If you like Carver, you need to be careful.”

“C’mon Mike, who said I even liked her like that anyway?” I asked. Suddenly I was dodging a drumstick being thrown at my head.

“Stephen, what the hell man?”

“Sorry, just thought it would knock the idiocy out of you. It was so obvious all weekend, we’re not stupid.”

“Who’s not stupid?” asked Rob suddenly, coming back into the room.

“No one.” the three of you said at the same time.

I knew I had some thinking to do.

Strung Out Photographs (A Billy Moran Fanfic)- Chapter 4

A/N: Either Chapter 6 or 7 is going to explain Rob and Carver’s fight. It’s coming soon. :D

Sunday; back to the photo opps for me.

Jensen and Jared’s panel was going on, which meant it was time for Rob and Rich’s photo opps. I had met Jensen and Jared when they had arrived that morning, and they seemed like nice people. However, every single person I had met this week, beside Richard, had one thing in common.

No one knew I existed.

And if I was being honest, I wasn’t surprised.

“I learned a different language for you, isn’t that enough?”

I closed my eyes, shuddering at the memory as the line of fans moved. You don’t see your brother in nearly four years, the memories apparently will come back up.

As I took each photo for a fan, I watched how my brother interacted with each person. He was caring, and I could tell he wanted to take his time with each and every fan that walked up.

It was like he was a different person.

As the line of people got smaller, and eventually ended, I took the camera of my neck, packing it up in my bag for now. I didn’t need it until Jared and Jensen’s photo opps a few hours later, and I had my own I could use for panel candids.

I zipped the bag up, suddenly feeling a buzz in my back pocket from my phone.

NEW MESSAGE: Billy Moran :-P

Am I making this hand shape right?

Attached was a photo, it looked like it nearly flipping off the camera. I laughed, typing back a response. I knew what he was trying to sign.

TO: Billy Moran :-P

Are you, are you trying to sign the word dog?

I got a response barely a second later.

NEW MESSAGE: Billy Moran :-P

I swear I wasn’t flipping you off.

Shaking my head, I stuffed my phone back into my pocket. Everyone was scheduled to be on a lunch break soon, so I could just show him the right sign then.

Billy and I had been texting all morning, and it was the easiest of conversations I’d ever been able to have with someone.

The dude was growing on me, I had to admit.

I felt a tap on my shoulder, and I turned around to face my brother.

“Hey, Rich and I are going to the green room for lunch. Want to walk with us?” asked Rob. He was using the sign name I had given Rich the first time I had met him; an “R” going across his upper lip and down his chin. He had had quite the beard.

“Yeah, sure. I was heading there anyway.” I signed back.

“So, how’s your first convention treating you?” asked Rob as Rich, him, and I were walking down the hotel hallway.

“Pretty great actually. I was happy to take a photography job, but it’s been really fun to meet all of you guys.”

Rich suddenly stopped, his lips moving way too fast for me to be able to lip read. I looked at my brother, seeing him laughing as he lifted up his hand.

“Sorry.”

I nudged him on the shoulder, having no idea what just happened.

“What did he say?” I asked, signing to my brother.

“He asked if I could voice what we were saying.” signed Rob, now voicing as it went along.

Oops.

“Anyway, what have you been up to lately, Carver? What’s it been, two years?” asked Rob.

I sighed, expecting nothing less if I was being honest with myself.

“Nearly four years, actually.”

Richard reached his arm out, stopping Rob and I in our tracks, his lips moving as he talked. I quickly looked at Rob.

“You two haven’t spoken in four years?” asked Rich, obviously surprised. It had been at least six since I had met Rich that one time.

Rob and I shrugged, nearly at the same time. No one knew what happened between us, not even our mother. It was a silent decision to keep it to ourselves.

As the three of us walked into the green room, I spotted Billy sitting at a table eating a sandwich. Danny had left about a half hour ago to get him and me lunch. The convention was serving turkey sandwiches and both he and I were allergic.

Billy lifted his head up, a smile appearing as he saw me approach. I slid in the seat next to him as he put his sandwich down. I grabbed his hand, forming it in the right shape to sign the word dog, then showing him the motion on my own.

“My bad.” signed Billy, laughing as he realized how off he was in the first place.

“Amateur’s mistake.” I signed. Billy tilted his head.

“I understood mistake.” I pulled my phone out.

TO: Billy Moran :-P

Amateur’s mistake

Feeling someone slide into the chair next to me, I turned to see Danny sit himself down, plopping a Subway sandwich and a coke bottle in front of me, it was my usual order of meatball.

“Thank you, sir.” I signed to him, opening up the bag.

I saw Billy raise his hand a bit, getting the two of our attention.

“Why, two of you, not eat muffin?” asked Billy, doing his best to sign. I turned to Danny, indicating for a translation.

“I’m impressed Billy, but the sign for sandwich is this.” Danny paused, showing the correct sign. “You just signed the word muffin.” said Danny, signing too.

“We’re both allergic to turkey.” I signed. Danny voiced for me.

“Damn, so close.” said Billy.

I laughed, enjoying the fact that I’ve known this guy for three days, and he was putting in so much effort to just talk to me. I’ve never had that before. Danny glanced at me, I could tell he was thinking the same thing.

I didn’t know Rob and Rich were sitting at the table behind us, Rob staring at the three of them with the utmost surprise.

“Four years, Rob? Really?” asked Rich, not recognizing this behavior that his best friend was showing. Rob was so open and loving to his mother and your two other sisters and brother. But everyone noticed this weekend that he never even mentioned you.

 “I didn’t even notice.”

Strung Out Photographs (A Billy Moran Fanfic)- Chapter 3

*BILLY’S POINT OF VIEW*

“So, Rob, why didn’t you tell any of us about this photo taker sister of yours?” asked Briana. The band, Jason, Rich, Rob, Briana, Ruth, Matt, and Kim sat at a restaurant for dinner before some of the others would head back for karaoke.

“Yeah, am I seriously the only one who’s met her?” asked Rich, shoving Rob a bit. Rob pushed back, obviously annoyed.

“Look, Carver and I aren’t the closet of siblings in the world. Rich met her once when he visited Missouri a few years back.”

“Any reason why she kept to herself all day?” asked Kim.

“Because she was in work mode.” said a voice. We all looked up to see Danny walking towards us.

“Hey, Danny right?” asked Briana as Danny leant himself against Rob’s chair.

“Danny Bracker. Sorry I hadn’t gotten the chance to introduce myself properly earlier. I’m Carver’s interpreter.” said Danny; he reached over, shaking Briana’s hand.

“Nice to meet you, Danny.” I said. He looked over to me.

“Billy, right?” I nodded.

“Hey, thanks for taking the time to actually sign to Carver earlier, even if it was just finger spelling.” Rob whipped his head over to me in shock and confusion; I could just feel my face going red.

“Uh, no problem.” I said, scratching the back of my neck nervously.

“Yeah, just don’t tell her that came from me, it just doesn’t happen often. She appreciated it.” If only he saw the amount of ASL videos in my search history right now.

“What do you mean she was in work mode?” asked Rob.

“When she’s taking photos she tends not to sign to anyone, even me to be honest. Help’s her concentrate.”

“Wanna join us for the rest of dinner?” asked Rich, gesturing to the empty chair at the end of the table.

“Would, but I’m just hear picking up food myself. Carver’s locked herself in our hotel room editing photos so she doesn’t have to worry during karaoke.”

All of a sudden, a notification went off on my phone. I looked down to see it was from Twitter.

@StrungOutPhotos tagged you in a photo

I unlocked my phone, assuming it was just another fan and photographer at the convention.

Whoa

I looked at the photo of me; it was during the intro this morning. It was a picture of me playing, and ego aside it was one of the best photos of me I had ever seen.

“Um, Danny? What’s Carver’s photography company called?” I asked, still in awe of the photo.

“Strung Out Photographs, why?” I turned my phone towards him so even everyone at the table could see.

“Whoa.” said Rob, looking at my phone. Danny just smirked.

“2 Cheese Burgers. Bracker!” called someone from the counter.

“And I’ll see you guys at karaoke.” said Danny. He winked at me, walking away.

“You alright there, Bob-O?” asked Rich. I turned to Rob, seeing he was still staring at my phone.

“Yeah, yeah. Sorry… It’s just I’ve never seen one of her photos before.”

I took my phone back, immediately retweeting the photo and following her account, photo and personal.

There was something special about this girl, and I was definitely going to find out what.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Saturday Night Special- Carver’s P.O.V

“Danny, I can tell by your face that you don’t want to be here.” I said, signing to my friend as we stood against the wall of the convention hall. Fans were filling in as the Saturday Night Special was about to start. Chris had left hours ago, photography was up to me for the rest of the weekend.

“No, no it’s fine. It’s just a little loud in here. I can live with the headache.” signed Danny. I gave my best friend the look. In the 20 years we’ve known each other he still wasn’t able to lie to me.

“Go. I promise I’ll be fine. All I’m going to do is take photos, and I’ll be up in the hotel room in no time.”

“You sure?” he asked.

Hanging my camera on my neck, I turned Danny around, pushing him to the exit. As much as I loved the dude, him and his headaches were not a pretty sight. I could see him hold up surrender hands as he walked away.

I turned to the crowd, taking in the sight before me. It was 9:30ish the last I checked, and people were crowding in inside. People were coming in to see my brother, they were coming in to see Rob. He had made it, the dream he had his entire life had come true.

And no matter how long it had been since we had even spoken to each other, I was proud. So. Damn. Proud.

“Just because I can’t hear it doesn’t take away my ability to appreciate it, it doesn’t take away my ability to appreciate you.”

I closed my eyes, trying to get the memory of the fight out of my head. That was then. I was here now, this was a chance to start over.

All of a sudden, a felt a tap on my shoulder. I turned around to see the one and only Billy Moran standing before. It wasn’t hard within the past 2 days to learn his last name.

“Nice shirt.” signed Billy, laughing I assumed. My eyes widened as I looked down, seeing the new Louden Swain shirt I had bought at the merch table earlier. However, my eyes widened for a different reason, because all of a sudden Billy here knew more ASL than he did yesterday.

I tilted my head.

“Learned something new I see.” I signed, curious if he’d get it.

Billy’s eyes lit up, a smile appearing wide on his face.

“I understood that!” he signed. It was my turn to laugh.

“I’m impressed.” Billy tilted his head in confusion, which made me laugh just a little bit harder.

“I-m-p-r-e-s-s-e-d.” I repeated the sign so he could match it together.

“Thank you.” signed Billy, the happiness evident.

Billy pulled out his phone, quickly pulling something up to show me the screen. It was a blank text message screen; ah. Billy Moran’s asking for my number.

I smiled, taking the phone and typing the nine digits. I handed him back his phone and watched him type something, feeling my own phone buzz in my pocket; I pulled it out.

MESSAGE: Unknown I just thought it would be an easier form of communication until I got better at ASL.

I typed my response back.

TO: Unknown What makes you so intrigued to learn a new language?

NEW MESSAGE: Unknown I may or may not have just met an intriguing girl.

Whelp. I didn’t expect that.

I looked up to the guy in front of my, one of my brother’s best friends, who was, well attempting to flirt with me. And frankly? I found myself wanting him to.

Billy looked down at an old calculator watch on his wrist. I looked at my phone.

9:50PM

NEW MESSAGE: Unknown I gotta go. *hey look up*

“See you later?” signed Billy.

I smiled, raising my own hands.

“Definitely.”

Billy smiled himself, mouthing the word bye to me before taking off to head backstage. I took a look around the room, trying to get back into focus so I could do the job I was paid to be here for. But, my mind couldn’t leave the thought of Billy.

I took my phone back out quickly, entering his contact name in. Maybe I was right about before.

I am here now, and it’s a chance to start something over.

Little did I know a certain rock star would play a big part in that.

Strung Out Photographs (A Billy Moran Fanfic)- Chapter 2

A/N: THIS TOOK SO LONG I’M SO SORRY AHHHHH.

*CHAPTER IN BILLY’S POINT OF VIEW*

I sat at the same table, a bit dumbfounded. Who was this girl? Why was she so intriguing?

The girl raised her hands, signing something way too quickly for me to understand with my limited knowledge of the language. I held my hand up to stop her.

“I o-n-l-y k-n-o-w t-h-e a-l-p-h-a-b-e-t.” I finger spelled. The girl smiled, I could tell she was surprised either way.

“O-n-e s-e-c.” said the girl, catching on to the only finger spelling. She turned to her computer, pulling up a word document.

“Hi! I’m Carver.” she typed, turning the computer to me. I laughed, she was smart.

“Nice to meet you, Carver.” I typed, pushing the computer back to her.

Carver looked the words I typed. Reaching her hand up, she pointed to each word, doing a sign after it.

“Is that how you sign ‘nice to meet you’?” I asked. She nodded. Gosh, she was really beautiful.

“Can I ask what you’re doing here? I’ve never seen you around before.” I said, typing again.

Reading the computer screen, Carver lifted her hands up, miming the action of taking a picture. Then it clicked, Chris was leaving early this weekend and Creation had given the choice on whom else to hire.

Before I could type anything else, a guy walked up behind her, tapping her on the shoulder before looking towards me.

“Sorry to interrupt.” said the guy, signing and speaking. Carver watched every move, so I assume he was her interpreter.

“Carver, Chris is here.” said the guy. He pointed to Chris standing by the door, he had just walked in. Carver turned and looked, nodding. She turned back to me.

“D-u-t-y c-a-l-l-s.” she finger spelled, signing with one hand and using the other to close her computer.

“Nice to meet you, B-i-l-l-y.” I recognized ‘nice to meet you’ by now.

“Nice to meet you, C-a-r-v-e-r.”

With another smile, she walked away.

“Earth to Billy?” I jumped, surprised at the sudden voice. I must have zoned out a bit too long. I looked up to see Richard standing above me, waving his hand in front of my face.

“Oh, hey Rich. What’s up?” I asked.

“You’ve been staring at your guitar pic for like 10 minutes.”

“Oh, have I?” I asked, not really paying attention. My eyes glazed over to Carver, she stood on the other side of the green room, talking to Chris. Rob and her, I assume, interpreter stood with her.

Richard followed my gaze.

“Why are you staring at Carver?” asked Rich.

“Wait, you know her?” I asked, slightly confused yet surprised.

“Dude, you don’t? You’ve known Rob longer than I have, hell I only ever met her the one time, but…” I gave him a confused head tilt. I’d known Rob for years and he never even mentioned someone named Carver.

“You really don’t know who she is? Dude, that’s Carver Benedict, Rob’s little sister.”

My eyes widened, shooting my head back over to her. Rob had another sister?

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A/N: So I don’t have to type the interpreting anymore, whenever Carver is in a conversation with someone and she responds automatically, assume it’s because Danny is interpreting for her unless stated otherwise. Cool? Cool.

“Okay, so your job for now before I leave tomorrow afternoon is to shadow me, watch the routines of the photo opps and things like that. You following me?” asked Chris. Chris, Danny, and I were in the photo opp room, waiting for the day to begin.

I nodded at Chris.

“Whenever we’re not in here or you have free time, feel free to take pictures of whatever you want.”

“Cool, and again, I appreciate this opportunity Chris.” I said, signing back.

“No problem, I loved your portfolio. Can’t believe I didn’t make the connection that you’re Rob’s sister though! Guess talent runs in the family.”

I smiled at Chris slightly, a bit uncomfortable at the comment. Rob and I were nothing alike.

Chris turned, completing the set-up of his camera equipment. Apparently Rob’s photo opps were first, so we’ll see how this goes.

A/N: Never been to a convention, forgive me if I get the order of photo-opps wrong.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“How’s she doing?” asked Rob to Chris later in the afternoon. Chris had left Carver to handle the Kim and Briana photo opps for practice. Rob and him stood in the back of the room, watching Carver and Danny work.

“Dude, she’s fantastic. I’ve never seen anyone understand what to capture so easily, especially without having to be told. Danny’s barely done any interpreting.”

“Yeah, she’s always been like that. I’m pretty sure Danny’s only here for emergencies.” said Rob, staring at his little sister in awe.

Here’s the truth, Rob and Carver Benedict were nothing alike. Rob was 8 years old when Carver was born, so the age difference was hard enough.

But then it was discovered that Carver was deaf, and the Benedict family’s entire world changed.

Rob’s a musician; music had been his life for as long as he could remember. It was really hard for him to make a connection with someone, who he thought, couldn’t appreciate one of the things he loved.

If he was honest with himself, it took him years to finally buck down and learn American Sign Language. Years went by with communications being made with just a pencil and paper.

If he was honest with himself, he didn’t even realize Carver had moved to Los Angeles.

If he was honest with himself, there was a reason none of his band mates even knew she existed.

If he was honest with himself, Rob didn’t even know Carver had started a photography business.

But, if he was really honest with himself, he had no idea that a guitarist in a room on the other side of the convention hotel was using his free time to look up basic ASL lessons on YouTube. A musician that was willing to do all the things that Rob hadn’t.

Strung Out Photographs (A Billy Moran Fanfic)- Chapter 1

A/N: I can’t believe I actually wrote this oh my lord. I would SERIOUSLY appreciate feedback on this friendos. I tagged anyone who sounded interested in the fanfic, but please tell me and I’ll tag you in any future chapters!

NOTE: As someone who is conversationally fluent in American Sign Language, I am aware of the grammatical differences between ASL and English. For the sake of it being a written story, ASL is written as if it were English.

“You alright, Carver?” asked Danny, signing to me as we walked through the busy hotel that was holding this weekend’s Supernatural convention.

“Fine, I’m fine.” I said, signing back. Danny was my best friend, as well as my ASL interpreter. Both his roles were definitely going to be needed this weekend.

I looked down at my badge on my lanyard.

Carver Benedict Assistant Photographer All Access Reference- Chris Schmelke

Danny tapped my shoulder. “It’s just I know how long it’s been since you’ve seen your brother.”

“I know. I just don’t know how he’s going to react to seeing me. You know how iffy our relationship has been.”

“Ah, the classic case; the musician doesn’t know how to handle having a deaf sister.” I shoved him on the shoulder.

This was going to be a long weekend.

I took in my surroundings as we walked towards the direction of the green room. Thousands of people, girls mostly, surrounding the walls and room. Rob and I may not see each other as much as I wish we would, but I was sure damn proud of him.

Danny and I finally reached the green room, a man stood outside the door. I’m assuming Clif. Danny and I raised our badges. Clif nodded, letting us in.

“See Chris?” signed Danny.

“Nope. How about Rob and Rich?” I asked, signing back. I had had the opportunity to meet Rich in the past and we had gotten along pretty well.

Danny shook his head. He pointed to the bathroom on the other side of the room. “I’ll be back.” I nodded, turning my attention to my camera that was still in my bag strapped to me.

Rob and I had a rough relationship to say the least. With me being significantly younger, and well, deaf, it was just hard to find a common ground. Normal, I guess.

I was a photographer, and I was getting pretty good as well. I liked pictures. You could tell a story without having to hear any words. Chris Schmelke hired me to help him this weekend because he had to leave Saturday afternoon. I was honored he had asked and immediately took the job.

All of a sudden, a hand was being waved in front of my face as I had been looking down at my camera. My eyes went wide and I looked up. A blonde woman stood before me, Briana I think her name was?

Her lips were moving, but of course I couldn’t hear anything.

I pointed to my ear, shaking my head quickly, trying to indicate my inability to know what she was saying. Thank God Danny opened the bathroom door just in time. He ran to my side. He started signing and speaking at the same time, I watched his hands.

“Sorry about that, Carver here is deaf. My name’s Danny, her interpreter. What were you saying?”

The woman’s eyes went wide as she turned back to me. She spoke, but I continued to watch Danny.

“I’m so sorry for my ignorance! My name’s Briana, we were all just wondering why someone we didn’t know was standing in the corner of the room, not talking to anyone.”

“No need to apologize,” I signed. “I’m looking for either Christ Schmelke or Rob Bene-.” Before I could even finish finger spelling the name Benedict, I was engulfed in a hug, I stumbled back a bit.

It was Rob.

“What are you doing here?” signed Rob quite excitedly. Realizing it was my older brother that I hadn’t seen in years, it was my turn to engulf him in a hug.

“Chris hired me to help him this weekend.” I signed, I showed him my badge. Rob’s smile just grew bigger, giving me another hug.

“Hey, Danny!” signed Rob, using Danny’s sign name. He shook my best friends hand in a greeting. Rob and Danny turned to Briana as she started speaking again. I turned back to Danny.

“What’s going on here?” asked Briana. Rob answered, signing and speaking for my benefit.

“Briana,” finger spelled Rob, “meet my little sister. Carver Benedict.”

“Nice to meet you.” I signed, Danny voicing.

“Are you the photographer taking over for Chris after Saturday?” asked Briana. “He said he has a family thing or something.”

I nodded, looking from Danny to Briana.

Rob tapped me on the shoulder.

“The convention is going to start soon. I have to introduce Briana here and Kim with Rich, who’s going to be very excited to see you by the way. Chris isn’t going to be here till later. You and Danny going to be alright till then?” signed Rob.

“You underestimate me big brother.”

Rob smiled, ruffling my hair as he walked away. Briana tapped my shoulder.

“It was nice to meet you!” she said with a smile. I looked back at her from Danny, smiling as well.

“Nice to meet you as well.” I signed, Danny speaking again for me.

Danny and I were left by ourselves again.

“Hey Carver, I’m going to go get our stuff from the car and put it in our room. Are you going to be alright here by yourself?” signed Danny.

“Yeah, I’ll be alright. I’m just going to make sure that my memory cards are all set up.” I gestured to an empty table I planned to sit at. All that was there was a dark orange guitar, left abandoned.

Danny nodded at me, leaving the room. I went and sat down in the chair next to the guitar.

I grabbed my computer out of my bag, making sure everything was in order. Chris was going to have me shadow him for the first day and a half before leaving me on my own for the last day and a half. He had given me a list of things to have and I just wanted to make sure I had everything on his list.

After a while, a felt someone moving the guitar, sitting down in the chair next to me. I looked up, expecting to see my brother, but not. A younger guy with black curly hair and glasses sat next to me. Not wanting to deal with the struggle of a language barrier, I quickly looked back down to the laptop.

Until he tapped me on the shoulder.

Looking up, the guy’s lips started moving, indicating he was saying things I obviously couldn’t hear. I quickly pointed to my ear, shaking my head; trying my best to indicate my deafness. But the guy caught me by surprise.

“O-h,” he began finger spelling, “M-y n-a-m-e i-s B-i-l-l-y.”
