I'm convinced it was a tragedy that tumblr learned the phrase "bury your gays" at the exact same time it decided that any fictional media darker than Landlord White was pearl-clutchingly problematic. Pouring one out for every creator of earnest LGBT+ media wanting to explore the themes of grief loss and tragedy who then got subsequently hounded by mobs of terminally online users brainrotted on nothing but conflict-free coffee shop AUs.

What Bury Your Gays actually is: queer characters brought in and killed only for shock value and to further the journey of the straight protagonist

What Bury Your Gays is NOT: any story with a queer death

And Elnor has my entire heart because they wrote a character who follows a code of honesty so stringent that he does not lie, and yet he is the sweetest person you will ever meet (occasionally he does decapitate people though.)

"filler" is so misused bc anime filler is a really specific phenomenon where the animators can't fill their allotted episode count with material from the manga so they invent side stories or pad existing plots out. if something isn't an anime that was adapted from a manga it literally can't have that kind of filler. then people start to apply the concept to simply "episodes of a show that don't move the plot forward" and I don't even know why that's a problem bc if done well theres nothing wrong with those. having episodes with low stakes makes the ones with high stakes more impactful, and breathing room between major developments makes them more exciting when they do happen. some people seem to have this idea that filler = boring, plot = good, and I wish they would lose that mindset

Me talking about Thirteen: She’s baby. she’s a serial killer. she’s intelligent beyond imagination she’s the dumbest character I’ve ever encountered she’s intensely moral and also those morals are entirely conditional she’s so sweet and happy she’s utterly miserable and full of rage she has done nothing wrong in her life she’s a genocidal maniac she’s very small and deserves to commit murder but she wouldn’t unless she would. You feel me

Everyone else in the chat: No yeah that’s literally it

One of my favorite moments of Buffy’s is when she tells Joyce that she and Spike are in a band together: Spike says she plays the triangle, and Buffy immediately corrects him to say she plays the drums.

At this point, Kendra is dead, Buffy has been wrongly accused of her murder, Willow is still in a coma, Giles has been kidnapped, and Angel might destroy the world at any moment. And yet, it is still deeply important to Buffy that she plays a real instrument in this fake band, while trying to sell her mother one of her worst lies (which is saying something).

I find this both hilarious and incredibly endearing.

the worst fictional deaths are actually the ones you see coming, where there is enough foreshadowing that you have time to hope, against all odds, that the character will survive, even as you realise that there’s no way out this time, they’re not going to make it, this was always how it was going to end
