Best part: this was improv.

George wasn’t supposed to have a line there, he was supposed to brandish the sword, grab her and leave. George decided to ad-lib a line because he thought it was funny and that it was in character. So Nichelle had no idea that George was about to say anything. They start the take, George leaps over there, grabs her and says his line. And Nichelle Nichols, not Lt Uhura, looks at him with That Look on Her Face, and in two iconic words lets the world know what she and Lt Uhura are about.

this article is hilarious, from the actress playing Ortegas:

I took it super seriously from the start. Word got around to everybody, including Paramount+ publicity, that Melissa is serious about this. Like I was having Zoom calls about the way that the engines work, the way the ship is built. So I have my way to go to warp, to go to impulse. Then there’d be times when I’m like doing evasive maneuvers where it’s not necessarily playing on my screen. So I would have the graphics guys just build that for me. And they’d be like, ‘Well, it’s probably not going to play in the shot.’ And I’m like, ‘Yeah, but it plays on my face.’ And so the way I look at it is that at any point, if we’re looking at it like ‘This is all just set,’ then we might as well all go home. So for me, like when I sit down there, like I become super dorky, super serious. I am flying a starship. Sometimes I’ll miss lines and people be like, ‘What happened?’ I was like, ‘Guys, I’m flying the ship. I’m just very focused.

@wilwheaton wrote here (on tumblr, where I can’t find it of course) how he had his own patterns on the console for “going to warp”, “evasive maneuvers”, and the like. I just love this to pieces!

There’s a long history of this. George Takei reports having developed his own “helm technique”, and following it to the point where if a director told him to throw a certain switch during a shot, George would (if necessary) refuse. “If I do that,” he reports having said on at least one occasion, “it’ll blow the ship up.”

The answered ask @startrekhasalwaysbeen is referring to is located here. There’s also this informative gem that the ladies in the article also touch upon.

at the risk of sounding like a raving lunatic, i think one of my favorite trekkie memes/posts is that one where someone comments on a screenshot of tos and asks if sulu is texting, because it PERFECTLY encapsulates star trek's strange little place at the intersection of pop culture and the tech world:

like listen... 55+ years ago a bunch of actors had to use a mix of existing habits and wild imagination to come up with what they felt would be believable movements and muscle-memory for someone using completely unbelievable tech a few hundred years in the future. like tv had less than ten channels and the screen was a foot across, and they had to go "ok how would someone who's used to a tiny wireless gadget with a screen hold it and use it? how would they talk to a computer? how would the computer sound when she talked back?"

and over half a century later our own tech has surpassed the clunky retrofuture gizmos in so many ways, no doubt inspired by it, that now someone two decades into the 21st century sees an actor in the 60s holding some tiny rectangular plastic prop in both hands and immediately recognizes it as "oh, sulu's texting!" now THAT is a called shot. hell, that's putting your money on a roulette wheel in a casino that hasn't been built yet. i LOVE it. it's so star trek. sulu is absolutely texting.
