Bella Ramsey (Lyanna Mormont) has been in the news a lot because of The Last of Us now airing on HBO. In one recent interview she came out as nonbinary.

Ahead of the series’ debut, she sat down with The New York Times for an interview published online Wednesday and was candid about how she identifies.
“I guess my gender has always been very fluid,” Ramsey said. “Someone would call me ‘she’ or ‘her’ and I wouldn’t think about it, but I knew that if someone called me ‘he’ it was a bit exciting.”
[ … ]
As for pronouns, Ramsey said she would check “nonbinary” if it’s an option on a form. “I’m very much just a person,” she added. “Being gendered isn’t something that I particularly like, but in terms of pronouns, I really couldn’t care less.”

Hello you need to see this drag performer talking about quantum physics, queer existence, and non-binary identities.

[Video Description: A drag queen — who is credited as Amrou Al-Kadhi / Glamrou, a drag performer, writer, and filmmaker — stands in front of a microphone and explains,

“Quantum physics is this incredible sect of of physics, which basically…

With like, Newtonian physics — I think of it as heteronormative physics — where its basically ‘What are the fixed universal principles that govern the world? If I do A, will B happen? What are the formulas that’ll tell us anywhere in the universe, “What will happen if I input this?”’

Quantum physics is equally a “real” sect of physics that basically looks at subatomic particles — so the very smallest things in our universe, not the macro things — and they contradict basically everything that Newtonian physics shows us. So, the most famous experiment is the Double Slit Experiment, where you fire an electron and it should go through the left or right hole. And then every now and then, it goes through both at the same time. And we don’t really know why. And sometimes, the same subatomic particle is in different locations at the same times.

And quantum physics shows that actually reality itself is basically a majority approximation of what’s happening sub-atomically. So when people spew the biological essentialism argument on me. Like, particles themselves are non-binary, and do things that contradict each other all the time, we just can’t see them all the time. And that gives me a lot of comfort, that if subatomic particles defy constructs all the time, why should we believe in fixed constructs of gender, or any kind of reality?” END DESCRIPTION]

“Newtonian physics is heteronormative” is not the take I expected to see on my dash today, but it is 100% inspirational.

ICYMI: MTV has done away with gendered categories for this year’s Video Music Awards, with “best male video” and “best female video” combined into the category “artist of the year.” Competing for that spot are Bruno Mars, Kendrick Lamar, Ed Sheeran, Ariana Grande, The Weeknd and Lorde.

For its movie and TV awards, which aired in May, MTV decided to combine the categories of best actor and actress, doing away with distinctions between genders and opting instead to award one film and one television actor. This year’s winners were Emma Watson and Millie Bobby Brown.
At the time, MTV general manager Amy Doyle told the Hollywood Reporter: “Great acting is great acting, no matter what the gender or non-gender. And it really is reflective about the audience’s views and when you look at the culture as a whole, you had a man against a woman running for president [last year]. It just felt like a dated construct for a category.”

Love it.

This reminds me a bit of the letter nonbinary actor Asia Kate Dillon wrote to the Television Academy because they were being submitted for Emmy consideration but did not know which category they should have themselves be submitted to (Best Supporting Actor vs. Best Supporting Actress). The Academy responded saying, “anyone can submit under either category for any reason.” Apparently it’s left entirely up to whichever term the performer identifies with. So that’s neat.
