NEW Bella wrote a letter in 2023, to support Choose Love's LGBTQIA+ Refugees. And part of her letter is now printed on a hooded sweatshirt that you can purchase. As worn here by both Bella & Pedro. Via Bella's IG. 🖤

"You don't have to know. You can just be and be proud. (What sweet, sweet relief) Take a breath now. You're allowed..."

I was worried this documentary would be a lot, because the synopsis made it sound like it was focused on the controversy and right-wing protesting of the play Corpus Christi by Terrence McNally (a reimagining of Jesus Christ as a gay man in Texas,) but it actually focuses more on the cast and how being in this play profoundly changed them. Initially it talks a bit about and interviews some of the original cast (who had to deal with a stupid amount of protesting and threats in NYC) but then centers mostly on a different group of actors who were brought together for a revival of the play at a small church in North Hollywood, for free. The production received such a positive response that it ended up touring nationally and internationally, and even made its way to a small church in Texas. So much of the cast is very candid in interviews about their own upbringings, what they came to the show with and what the show gave them in return. (Many are queer and grew up in religious households that did not accept them.) It is very cathartic to see them take back a space of trauma and turn it into a space of healing and acceptance, the kind of space it should have been for everyone this entire time.

An excellent hour-ish watch if you're in the mood to feel things. 👍

Holy shit, Dr. Tingle, go OFF!!!!

been trotting through and looking at old posts about old chuck on here and it is SO MOVING i appreciate this love and kindness so much. i will probably reblog a few that i find moving every once in a while but dang really appreciate this one.

if you trot along the LGBTQIA SPECTRUM then your identity is VALID and you are welcome in the tingleverse bud. come on in we got chocolate milk and spaghetti for everyone

as all proud BI BUCKAROOS know gatekeeping can be such a big problem with purity tests telling you THEY know who you are more than you know yourself. guess what bud, YOU know yourself and your identity is yours alone. obviously this is big issue from OUTSIDE the community but dang does it sting a little more from inside. this is why i have said many times:

the one person WHO NEEDS A HOME that you keep out with your gates is not worth the devils you filter. when a buckaroo says ‘this is my way’ it is so important to say ‘okay bud love is real come on and trot with us’

Following an attack on a queer business is EXACTLY when you should have Pride.

It's not just a celebration. It's defiance.

it wasn’t exactly spontaneous, activists from doubly marginalised groups like Salam (queer muslims), Skeiv verden/Queer world (queer immigrants), and other groups like PKI/POGI (trans people) organised through chat messages

I’m watching that documentary “Before Stonewall” about gay history pre-1969, and uncovered something which I think is interesting.

The documentary includes a brief clip of a 1954 televised newscast about the rise of homosexuality. The host of the program interviewed psychologists, a police officer, and one “known homosexual”. The “known homosexual” is 22 years old. He identifies himself as Curtis White, which is a pseudonym; his name is actually Dale Olson.

So I tracked down the newscast. According to what I can find, Dale Olson may have been the first gay man to appear openly on television and defend his sexual orientation. He explains that there’s nothing wrong with him mentally and he’s never been arrested. When asked whether he’d take a cure if it existed, he says no. When asked whether his family knows he’s gay, he says that they didn’t up until tonight, but he guesses they’re going to find out, and he’ll probably be fired from his job as well. So of course the host is like …why are you doing this interview then? and Dale Olson, cool as cucumber pie, says “I think that this way I can be a little useful to someone besides myself.”

1954. 22 years old. Balls of pure titanium.

Despite the pseudonym, Dale’s boss did indeed recognize him from the TV program, and he was promptly fired the next day. He wrote into ONE magazine six months later to reassure readers that he had gotten a new job at a higher salary.

Curious about what became of him, I looked into his life a little further. It turns out that he ultimately became a very successful publicity agent. He promoted the Rocky movies and Superman. Not only that, but get this: Dale represented Rock Hudson, and he was the person who convinced him to disclose that he had AIDS! He wrote the statement Rock read. And as we know, Rock Hudson’s disclosure had a very significant effect on the national conversation about AIDS in the U.S.

It appears that no one has made the connection between Dale Olson the publicity agent instrumental in the AIDS debate and Dale Olson the 22-year-old first openly gay man on TV. So I thought I’d make it. For Pride month, an unsung gay hero.

As an aside, ‘Before Stonewall’ is an all-around excellent documentary (if you want to learn more about LGBTQIA+ history it’s a great place to start!) and is available to watch in on YouTube, or if you live in the US and have a library card you can watch for free on Kanopy.

aromantic and asexual (and aspec in general) people belong in my community.

transgender and nonbinary people who present as their agab (for any reason - it's none of my business) belong in my community.

gender non-conforming (including pronoun non-conforming) individuals belong in my community.

people who are questioning, haven't labeled themselves, or haven't quite figured themselves out yet belong in my community.

if you fit in one or more of these categories, you belong, and i welcome you with open arms.
