I finally watched Possession after avoiding it for years because people talked about it like it would scar me for life, and perhaps it's the tumblrina in me, but I did not find it anywhere near as weird as people made it seem. It is undeniably weird as hell, but I think just calling it that kinda undersells it.
A better way to describe it, I think, is that it is one of those films you're gonna need at minimum 3-5 business days to figure out if you liked it or not and why, and the reason for that is a combination of unhinged subject matter, and actors who are insanely committed to it.
The script is like if you tore out the pages of someone's diary from the day their partner told them they want a divorce, gave those pages to actors, and those actors just fucking ceased to be people. Just full-on embodied these illogical, disconnected bits of raw, live wire emotion instead.
I kept skipping back to rewatch certain moments simply because I was fascinated by the performances. I've never seen a person express themselves like that? Like what the fuck did this director say to them to get them to that place? What fucking place even is that??
Also sometimes it's funny? That's another thing people don't seem to talk about much, maybe that reaction isn't universal - and other parts, to be clear, are not funny at all - but I was pleasantly surprised to be laughing at times.
I don't know, just throwing this out there for anyone who is in the boat I was in, confused at what the vibes of it are, wondering if they should actually watch it or not. It's possible none of this helps you make a decision on that. But I tried!
