My Prince Charles/Princess Leia and CS in Camelot custom Funkos are here! 😍
“The realm of fairy-story is wide and deep and high and filled with many things: all manner of beasts and birds are found there; shoreless seas and stars uncounted; beauty that is an enchantment, and an ever-present peril; both joy and sorrow as sharp as swords.”
In which Killian faces his punishment in purgatory. He is cursed to a life alone, with no memory of a lass with golden hair and eyes as green as the sea. That is, until she starts showing up at his little shop on the edge of town every day.
I suppose this is spec fic? Lord knows where it came from.
I ain’t done much healing.
Twining fishing hooks with lures has never been a particular skill of his, but Liam has just purchased the last three and he’s fresh out. He has half a mind to think that his brother does it on purpose - intentionally buying him out of the one thing he has no desire to make.
But that would be too direct for Liam’s tastes. Instead his brother prefers a more passive form of aggression. Liam stops by his shop weekly, but doesn’t utter a word, doesn’t even bother with a glance. He takes his wares and leaves money on the counter often before Killian can do as much as make his way to the front of the shop.
He supposes he is the only maritime supply store in town. It’s not as if Liam has a choice.
He isn’t sure if that makes him feel better or worse.
aside from everything else, can we appreciate killian’s handwriting? like???
Once Upon a Time: Elliot Knight on Merlin's Humanity and Unexpected Twists (Plus whether Merlin will stick around.)
Once Upon a Time finally peered into the origin of Merlin in Sunday’s episode “Nimue,” revealing that the first Dark One was none other than the woman Merlin fell in love with. That revelation sets up a big two-hour special for the series, airing on November 15th, which will delve into what Emma did in Camelot.
After Merlin’s big backstory episode, I hopped on the phone with Elliot Knight to talk about what we learned about his character. He also opened up about whether Merlin has more going on than is apparent, and whether he’ll be sticking around past the midseason finale. Even better, he promises a “lot of twists and turns, a lot of which are unexpected,” in the upcoming two-hour special.
IGN: What did you think of the revelation that the Dark One’s magic comes from the same place as Merlin’s magic?
Knight: I think it’s brilliant, because it acknowledges in the show that there is a link between good and evil, and it’s very, very, very thin line that divides the two – which for me is choice. That’s what determines the two different things. I also like the fact that we saw that Nimue became the first-ever Dark One, because she’s the best choice to do an act that, even though for her it was justice and it was right, there is sort of this overarching, universal law of things you can’t do, you know? It’s almost like, in Harry Potter, magic can be wonderful and it can be used for good or evil, but you do have those three forbidden curses. There are some acts you can’t do, but it’s the same power that is yours to choose how you use it. I really like that theme. I think it’s very smart.
IGN: For being a guide for some of these main characters on this show this season, Arthur and Emma, Merlin is not doing the best job in getting them to be good people and make the right choices. I’m curious if you think that he has another goal that’s maybe under the surface, different than what we’re seeing; if he has some other endgame beyond the one that he’s saying?
Knight: I think Merlin does have his own – not his own agenda, but I think of him more like a messenger, if you will. There is a bigger picture that he is a part of, and it’s not that he is out for himself to get something further beyond these characters. It’s more that he feels a duty to maintain and restore balance in the world, which I really like. And then, again, like I said, the main ingredient for good or evil, the power you have, is choice. So of course you see that Arthur has gone a bit wayward and is not what he expected. It’s not simple with Emma, but it does have to come from that person and their own heart, which, again, the theme of this series is – for me, the theme of magic in general is what you choose to do with it. It defines the person that you are. Not necessarily the preconceptions you have with these characters. “Oh yeah, they’re like this all the time,” one way.
What the show has done is expand on the dimensions that they have and make them much more interesting, more human, characters – which I would include Merlin in as well. He’s just as human as everyone else. I really enjoyed this episode because you get to see some of his emotional roots. Even though he may be technically immortal, he still has those human instincts and desires. I think he’s one of the most sensitive characters we’ve seen on the show, which also makes him one of the most powerful – in my understanding anyway, because power is so completely tied to emotion. I really like the idea of having a Merlin that isn’t just an all-powerful, stoic, unmoving hero. He’s actually one of the most sensitive humans with a very, very delicate side to him because of his ties to the woman that he loves.
IGN: You talk about choice, and to me I think one of the main themes of this show from the beginning has been, you can choose the light or choose the darkness, which for me has made this whole plan to destroy the darkness seem a little bit ill-conceived because it seems so at the core of these characters and this show. I’m sure you’re farther ahead than I am in terms of shooting versus what we’ve seen, but what can you say about this plan to destroy this whole draw of darkness, and what are your thoughts on whether that is a good plan or a bad plan?
Knight: As far as Merlin goes, I think just like all classic, ambiguous characters things can often be more than they seem. And just because somebody says something doesn’t mean it’s true – but still with the good intentions, like I said, with the bigger picture. I think there’s always going to be that struggle between good and evil. There was a scene where Merlin says to Emma that hopefully one day there might be someone who is strong enough to harness power and not be corrupted by it. But at the same time, if we continue to battle the evil, then we won’t have to ask that much of anyone ever, which is the overall goal. But I don’t know, we’re going to have to wait and see what happens. I mean, I know what happens, but…
IGN: [laughs] We have to wait and see what happens. You already know what happens.
Knight: Exactly! Everyone else is going to have to wait and see. We already know that it’s a constant battle and a constant struggle of choice and then human weaknesses. It’s what makes this push and pull, this tug of war, so gripping for the next few episodes. And there are going to be a lot of twists and turns, a lot of which are unexpected – maybe not just to the viewers but perhaps to the characters as well. Things might go in a direction that they don’t expect.
IGN: There was one scene in Sunday’s episode where Zelena casts the curse to bind Merlin to Excalibur. That seemed like it was very easy for her to do considering how powerful Merlin is. Can you talk at all to that? Is there more than meets the eye there, or is he actually fully bound?
Knight: Well, in terms of – the technicality of the magic, yes, we didn’t actually see the spell that was performed or what happened. So we don’t actually know the cost that was paid, the price that was paid, to perform that spell, to tether Merlin to Excalibur. But like in the scene where Merlin sits down with Emma and he says to her, “Yes, I am immortal, but the Dark One does have the power to kill me. There are always exceptions to magic. Always.” And no one magical person or being will ever be all-powerful or not have a weakness. Again, that’s what I liked about this episode; you see that Merlin does have a huge weakness. He has a huge soft spot. What we don’t see, the sort of preamble in Camelot with Arthur – and Merlin was basically there to guide Arthur. But again it has to be free will and choice, so he cannot force things upon him, but he tried to guide him. But once he was imprisoned in the tree, it was very difficult for him to do so in a direct manner.
Then, through choice, Arthur’s gone on his own little deranged mission, but still he remains one of the closest people to Merlin. He still remains that person, probably aside from the Apprentice, who had the closest access to Merlin, who Merlin trusted. So who knows? There are any number of secrets that Arthur could have access to and be aware of. That could maybe be weaknesses of Merlin’s. He might know certain ways to deal with him or keep him out of the way. Also, we see him in Merlin’s tower, in last night’s episode, making spells and doing magic. So I think it’s a mix of him breaking in and just sort of smashing around and seeing what ingredients he can put together to do stuff, and reading spells – but also knowing, having this knowledge from Merlin, he’s been around Merlin. He’s seen him do spells and make potions and all of this stuff. So I don’t think we should underestimate the power that Arthur or Zelena have, especially when they’re combined.
IGN: Next week we have the big two-parter, and it seems like that might be the episode where we find out what happened to Emma that made her embrace her Dark One abilities. What can you say to tease those episodes?
Knight: In terms of battles with good and evil, there are going to be some very exciting moments in the two-hour special. Yet, we will definitely come to a pinnacle, of sorts, of this story and Emma’s journey with the darkness. Not to say it will be the end, but it will definitely be a very, very important point. Also, one of my favorite scenes will be coming up too.
IGN: Can you give us a clue, so we’ll know it when we see it?
Knight: Uh… no. But you will know it when you see it. Like, there is no mistake. You will know. It’s a huge moment. It might even be one of the biggest moments in this series so far.
IGN: Oh, nice! That is a high bar.
Knight: Yeah, it is. So I hope it beats it now. [laughs] Then the episode airs, and I find they cut out the scene. Then I’m like, “Oh, OK. Well.”
IGN: For the premiere we did a Q&A with Adam Horowitz and Eddy Kitsis, and they said Emma’s struggle with the darkness will sort of stretch over the entire season. It won’t be something that’s wrapped up in the midseason finale. I know I am not alone in really enjoying your depiction of Merlin.
Knight: Thank you!
IGN: So I was wondering if we can expect to see you throughout this whole season or if you have plans to stick around or come back farther down the road.
Knight: Hey, I mean, that’s really a question for the boys. They haven’t told me anything that I am not supposed to know. But also I do understand that – look, let me put it this way. Putting my ties to the show aside, looking at the character of Merlin – who he is, what he represents – I wouldn’t rule him out of any situation. But we’ll have to wait and see. Also, for a lot of it, I don’t know as much as everybody else knows. It’s not like we know everything that’s going to happen from the very beginning to the very end of this season. The guys, they like to keep a lot of things under wraps while they work on it and they develop it. It’s a very collaborative environment in Vancouver, where they’re shooting it. Everyone knows their characters so well now, and I think that they are trying to do the best that they can. It’s a very complex process trying to blend in everyone’s journeys and stories, overarching with so many characters, so we will see. (x)
WELP. OFF THE NEAREST CLIFF I GO.
