careful intentional queercoding and subtext is literally SO sexy but these days people act like the only reasons a writer might choose subtext over overtly stating queerness in the text are either obliviousness (straight people creating accidental homoeroticism), malicious intent ("queerbaiting"), or externally-imposed restriction (the publisher/network/"chinese and russian markets" wouldn't approve) but have you considered that sometimes… things that are purely subtextual… are better. better and sexier and more powerful.

because intentional queercoding in the subtext of a story turns it into an active conversation. instead of a singular narrative that must be universally legible and palatable in order to be presented and consumed in a way that maintains a clear distinction between author and audience, where the Word of God creates a singular Canon that we the people must accept and adhere to, subtextual queercoding requires the audience to pay careful attention and to actively participate in the synthesis of the true full meaning of the story, tapping into a simultaneously private and communal shared knowledge and language and experience. it demands something from the audience, demands care and attention and a sharing of a part of themselves, and in return transforms what could otherwise be a process of passive consumption into a mutual and reciprocal act of co-creation

i think one of the biggest issues with social justice discourse both on this website and off is this tendency to believe in the inherent virtue of oppressed people and to insinuate that oppression is bad bc marginalized people are “innocent” or inherently morally better and not simply because they are human beings which should be enough reason in itself

Or worse, to imply that oppressed people are morally better and more innocent because of being oppressed, which kind of just feeds back into the idea that oppression is a good thing because it makes people morally better. Which is wrong and bad

was forced to watch his special when on a trip, found it aggressively unfunny. You can clearly tell that he wasn't trying to make people laugh, he wanted Reaction. Multiple "jokes" he'd set up and then eagerly await the reaction of the crowd, and if it wasn't either positive or overly negative he'd kinda quickly move on to another. Felt like watching a shitty campus preacher.

Reminder to those with a netflix account that tomorrow, October 20th, is the employee walkout in protest against the company’s consistent defense of transphobia and horrible treatment of trans employees who voiced objections.

The employee who originally organized the walkout has been fired. As part of the rally tomorrow morning at 10:30am, organizers will present a list of firm asks to co-CEO/Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos, who you might also know as the guy who sent multiple internal memos arguing that media has no impact at all on how human beings see each other and ourselves. (Arguing that you think media as a whole is fundamentally pointless is a really good argument for him not having this job anymore, I guess.)

Please support the trans employees and their allies by not using your netflix account tomorrow, Wednesday October 20th, 2021.
