First episode - last episode
Happy to see @tazscripts work ‘in the wild’ here! Thank you again, volunteers!
[Images: screenshots of episode transcriptions from the first and last episodes of the Balance arc. In the first, Griffin complains that he won’t have fun DMing the game. In the last, Clint uses a magic item to compel an honest answer from the DM, and asks Griffin if he had fun doing the adventure; Griffin answers, “Yes, of course!”]
This animation took so long to do, and all because my computer wanted to crash ninety times while I was animating.
Credit for the designs goes to Carey Pietsch, content and voices belong to the McElroys. Animation is all me.
How To Validate A Child’s Work Without Swearing and Saying “Lil Dude That’s Fuckin Sick”
“Game Changer”
I've been dragging my feet on posting this, but I made some fanart! I wanted to do a quick collage to break up my frustration with another project, and here it is. It's made of clippings from various magazines glued onto mixed media paper in a few layers.
“Game Changer”
So, if I’m not mistaken, those McElboys are at the very least acquaintances of Joseph Fink, right? And they do already have all the equipment they would need to record, say, a guest appearance on a podcast??
*chanting*
INTERNS INTERNS INTERNS INTERNS INTERNS INTERNS INTERNS INTERNS INTERNS INTERNS INTERNS INTERNS INTERNS INTERNS
I don’t know if I could handle listening to WTNV, hearing Cecil introducing a new intern who will be speaking in the studio today and it being Griffin fucking McElroy
We should have, like … an event or a tag or something inspired by Magnus’s first duck carving where we’re encouraged to post art (visual, writing, handicrafts, music, whatever) that we’re nervous and uncertain about and then other people come in and say nice things about it.
It’s been almost a year since Magnus’s First Duck and I think that’s a great time to make this idea a reality.
So by the power vested in my by my own defiant self-confidence, I’m declaring June 1st-7th, this year and every year that follows to be Duck Days!
For the first week of June, this blog will be reblogging any post tagged with #duckdays2018!
There’s two ways to celebrate this event! One is by making and/or posting content you’re uncertain about. Art, writing, music, craft, cooking, programming, anything at all! It’s a great time to try something new or show off something you’ve been working on.
If you don’t have anything you want to post (and even if you do) the second way to celebrate it is even more important: reblog, reply or comment on the work and tell the creator what you like about it!
If you’re not in the TAZ fandom, don’t let that stop you from participating! It’s inspired by TAZ, but appreciating and sharing amateur work is something anyone can enjoy. Let’s spread positivity, celebrate amateurs, celebrate learning and growing and punch “cringe culture” in the face!
if you’re still doing those prompts, 7 for blupjeans?
i sure am! thank you
tw: weight is mentioned (in reference to someone not getting enough to eat while kidnapped)
Barry’s soup bowl shakes in his hands.
Lup has no problem admitting that it’s cold, but Barry’s bulk usually affords him relative warmth, at least in comparison to the group. The three months he spent in prison aren’t as visible as they were a few days ago; he’s shaved off the awful patchy beard and most of his bruises are already fading. But some of the effects aren’t so easily shaken off, one of them being the weight he lost.
Lup doesn’t like watching him. His face is thinner, which makes his brow look heavier, and his shorn hair looks off-puttingly military for the abstractly scientific mind beneath it. The firelight soothes his coloring a little, but he still looked ashen-faced in the afternoon, exhausted and anemic.
He looks so hypnotized by the fire that Lup is surprised when he glances up and catches her watching him. The smile that splits his face does him a lot of favors.
“Magnus was watching me like that earlier,” Barry says ruefully, setting down his bowl and rubbing a self-conscious hand over his growing-back hair. “Is it really that bad?”
“Nah,” Lup lies. “Just weird, that’s all. You look at someone’s face for thirty years, it’s hard to adjust when they start looking different.”
so excited for more of amnesty :D

The Adventure Zone
Title: The Adventure Zone
Persons Responsible: Griffin, Travis, Justin, Clint McElroy
Genre: Fiction, Adventure (obvs), Fantasy/Sci-Fi, Role-playing
Rating: 4.5/5, Yisss
Warnings: Mentions of death, vore jokes, general shenanigans and tomfoolery
Notes: The core premise of this podcast is that three brothers and a father play a game of Dungeons and Dragons (for the initial 69+ episodes), and then branch out to different role-playing games, characters, and narrative arcs. The first arc (Balance) is a high fantasy game following Magnus the fighter, Taako the wizard, and Merle the cleric through a campaign centered around locating a number of impossibly powerful relics. However in practice it is not nearly as serious as the synopsis makes it sound.
The McElroys are old hands and radio and podcasting, so unlike a number of role-playing podcasts there is no audio quality hump to get over in the beginning. There are cognizant of their listening audience (i.e. do not talk over each other, recognize when they are lagging on a topic, give heads ups for delays or schedule changes when possible) and are incredibly responsive and interact with their audience in very interesting ways. NPCs are named after people who mention The Aventure Zone on Twitter, they set aside entire episodes to answer questions, and as both creators and performers respond to complaints/critique in what seems like a reasonable manner.
However what really makes this podcast one of my favorites is the writing for the first arc. It very obviously started out as a creative project that wasn’t expected to go as far as it did, but by the end of the Rockport Limited story (episode 16) Griffin McElroy truly hits his stride as a writer. And it only gets better from there, the overarching plot is incredible and fits in with its humble beginnings, the music for the show (especially for the Crystal Kingdom) is Quality™, and by the end of the Balance arc you end up much more invested than you ever thought you would be.
Now for the characters. Griffin McElroy is a good DM and runs a well-constructed campaign, but the players (Clint, Justin, and Travis) really bring the whole thing home. All three make fascinating characters with fulfilling progressions, come up with creative solutions to problems Griffin puts forward, and are all-around wonderful.
Also it’s hilarious. And periodically gay. Jiminy Christmas just listen to it please.
If you’re not ready to commit to such a long campaign, the McElroys have recently put out a few non-D&D miniature arcs as they plan their next large arc. These arcs are Commitment, Amnesty, and Dust which are superhero, cryptid, and supernatural Western themed respectively. These are also very good and funny but since they are a new system each arc they do set aside a considerable amount of time to explain the rules. This is a little startling given that the Balance arc played very fast and loose with rules and system explanations.
I was a little hesitant to review this podcast seeing how large its fandom is, but I hope that if anyone reading this was hesitant to start listening to it, they will take the plunge.
