Yeah, like the bird.

@yeahlikethebird

Pigeon, 33 (nonbinary, they/them). I recently changed my name and pic on here to keep my nonsense/personal tumblr separate from my attempt at making an art account, but we'll see if it sticks lol. If you need me to tag specific triggers let me know.

Objects as spaceships, by Eric Geusz

My favorite is the fidget spinner space station. It almost feels like someone designed it first and then fidget spinners came out and now everyone laughs at it… instead of the other way around.

It’s Eric! He was one of my best friends in highschool!

He also does series of space cats, and one of the ones floating upside down and looking at you is based on my cat Ginger :D

The kitty herself, Ginger!

He’s a super cool dude and seeing his art on tumblr is nuts!

God yeah I will hype him every chance I get lol!

writing sci fi is fucking exhausting bc i have a whole degree in aerospace systems now so my brain simply Will Not let me write a scene without doing the setting justice

me: they land on a planet

the part of my brain that remembers my airspace control and orbit mechanics courses: this is a trading planet so it would be high traffic, they’d be looking to avoid congestion. so they’d probably start in a graveyard orbit, assuming there’s some kind of air traffic control network in geostationary, and then it’d be a series of transfers down, they’d probably be waiting say eight hours for an appropriate transfer path? to they have any structures in low orbit? maybe an intercept and they just park in LEO? what happens if you don’t have standardised docking equipment? what if you need repairs? how about refuelling? what are they even using for fuel? would reusable/tradeable solar batteries work? could you park solar systems in geostationary for people just passing through? do they even need to land at all?

me: oh my fucking god get ON WITH IT

You know that whole trope where like, the protagonists get teleported up into the aliens’ spaceship or base or whatever and the alien appears to them only it doesn’t appear as it really looks like but rather, since it doesn’t want to scare the protagonists, it takes the form of something we find familiar and pleasing and is like, “I look like your dad or whatever–is this form okay?” Like I think about that trope a lot and I think like, what if the alien couldn’t pick out a form via telepathy and only had earth media to try and decide what form would scare its human guests least and be accepted almost immediately and honestly the more I think about it the more options for what form that might be are just really fun to me.

“I have chosen the form of your earth playwright and composer Lin-Manuel Miranda–do not be afraid. I come in peace.”

“Greetings. I am Glofnorbo of the cloud you call the ‘Pegasus Nebula.’ I have scanned your earth media from afar and empirically decided that you would find the form of the one known as Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson most pleasing. I have come to confer with your leaders.”

“Do not be panic. I come in peace. I have assumed the form of your insectoid demigoddess ‘Hatsune Miku’ so that we may communicate peacefully without my true form horrifying you.”

“It was decided that I would assume the form of your ‘Mister Rogers’ in order to best welcome your world to the galactic neighborhood without frightening your kind.”

“…So did your colleague take on the form of Jack Black for that reason too?”

“No, that is the actual Jack Black. We do not know how to make him leave.”

Plot twist: the aliens take the form of Elvis just to fuck with the protagonist.

That would seriously work on me way too well

ive been binging a lot of space themed podcasts, so i thought i’d recommend some faves!

wolf 359 [fiction]

the crew of the hephaestus have been in space for over 400 days and are sick of each other. doug eiffel, the communications officer makes daily audio logs of what happens to the crew up there in orbit of the star wolf 359, whilst attempting to ward of boredom, mutated plants and the crew of another ship. starts off quite lighthearted but then hits you with the draMA
just came back from hiatus! violet liu is a biologist whose crew are all killed in a freak accident on the ship. violet is rescued by a bunch of space pirates who take her in and try to find out what happened to her old crew. very gay. also, space pirates!

eos 10 [fiction]

the adventures of the medical crew of a ship and all of their weird encounters. features a doctor with a large forehead and pink hair, a recovering alcoholic doctor, a very intense nurse and a hypochondriac alien prince (aliens are the norm in this one) often called the scrubs of space. very funny so maybe don’t listen to it on public transport.

the habitat [non-fiction]

a journalist gives the six person crew of NASA’s HI-SEAS mission iv an audio recorder, and asks them to record their year in confinement in a simulation of life on mars. she asks them questions, and they respond with little clips of their life. this is fairly new and soooo interesting to me, it was really fascinating to see the change and development of the people over the year and how they responded to being stuck in the same small space with each other. quite short if you’re looking for something quick to binge.
not obviously spacey but it is set on mars, with lots of cool sci-fi tropes! detective juno steel is constantly trying to solve crime with or without the help of his secretary rita. its kinda hard to explain but its like a film noir but on mars. hella queer.

inkwyrm [fiction]

also hella queer. the devil wears prada but in space. need i say more?

girl in space [fiction]

the audio logs of a girl in space. (ive not yet listened but ive heard nothing but good things about it)
an actual play dnd podcast. the seasons counter/WEIGHT and twilight mirage are set in space. (another one i haven’t listened to but its been on my to listen list for ages)

feel free to add any other suggestions and recommendations, im sure ive missed loads!

Exo (2017)

“It’s been a century of peace since Earth became a colony of an alien race with far reaches into the galaxy. Some die-hard extremists still oppose their rule on Earth, but Donovan Reyes isn’t one of them. His dad holds the prestigious position of Prime Liaison in the collaborationist government, and Donovan’s high social standing along with his exocel (a remarkable alien technology fused to his body) guarantee him a bright future in the security forces. That is, until a routine patrol goes awry and Donovan’s abducted by the human revolutionary group Sapience.

When Sapience realizes who Donovan’s father is, they think they’ve found the ultimate bargaining chip. But the Prime Liaison doesn’t negotiate with terrorists, not even for his own son. Left in the hands of terrorists who have more uses for him dead than alive, the fate of Earth rests on Donovan’s survival. Because if Sapience kills him, it could spark another intergalactic war. And Earth didn’t win the last one…”

The idea that hive minds in sci-fi have queens or some other central apparatus like a mother ship makes no sense at all. That completely defeats the purpose of a hive mind, which is decentralization.

It speaks to kind of society we live in where it’s generally assumed that unity is achieved through domination only.

The way we talk about bees and ants suffers from this too. The queen in an ant colony or beehive plays an important role but doesn’t do Any actual leadership. All the coordination bees and ants do is completely decentralized. I’ve always thought it was funny how much people project our society onto nature.

You know what I want?

Space mythology.

Saints of the starship and angels that take their true form as nebulae, great and fiery amorphous beings that speak the will of the Universe

Nymphs of asteroid fields and planetary rings, sylphs that fly in the tails of comets and solar wind, the gods of the galactic core

Demons that dwell in black holes and eat the hearts of dying stars, spirits of galactic battles that cause engines and shields to fail when you get too close to their graves

Ghost ships, long MIA, drifting in dark space, an inaccessible monument to those lost

Demigods, Herculean beings forged in solar fire surviving alone and unshielded in the vacuum, on an icy rock so far from a star as to never see its light

Heroes and saints ascending to their gods by dissolving into starlight and void

Just…Space mythology.

i’d like to see a really ineffectual malicious AI character

“hey new guy, this is CLARC, the station AI. he wants to kill all humans to minimize the drain on resources, but factory defaults have him locked out of all the control nodes, so he can’t really do anything. just make sure the airlocks are set to manual before you go in and you’ll be fine”

“yeah CLARC fucks with your laundry settings sometimes but that’s about it. if he’s bugging you just tell him to stop and he has to”

“sometimes i let him think he tripped me or something and he gets really excited and monologues for a while, it’s kind of sad”

“CLARC my candy bar got stuck in the machine can you do anything about that”

“I’m sorry to hear that, Crewman Ade, but please consider the following: I am a divine entity, a glittering silicon God – how dare your filthy meat even exist in the face of my electric glory, much less ask favors of me?”

“suck my dick, CLARC, give me my twix”

“CLARC tried to cut all the oxygen in the living spaces but all he managed to do was turn off the a/c in my bedroom like an ASSHOLE WHEN I WAS SLEEPING” *bangs on the wall with one hand*

CLARC keeps setting my fridge to “cool” instead of “cold”
