For those of you who don’t know this is Hiyao Miyazaki. Creator of My neighbor totoro, spirited away, kiki’s delivery service, howl’s moving castle and tons of other classic anime movies. Though they are only called anime due to japanese origins and art style, they follow very few anime style tropes.
To put his quote into context, he’s talking about what anime has become in japan. It’s oversaturated, flat, cliche and ultimately not up to his standard. I mean if you created some of the best, for example let’s say horror, movies of all time and were asked about the current state of horror movies, wouldn’t you be pissed at shit like Saw 6 and Moderately Successful Horror film so we made a second one? No, you’d be pissed.
Also, Japanese Otakus are so terrible. Nobody stateside has anything close to them. Even our most devout anime fans always have at least another hobby or even anime they watch. Otaku, not so much. In fact Otaku are so common in Japan and shut themselves off from the world to such a degree that if current birthrates and immigration rates occur, Japan will have nobody living on it’s islands in 900 years.
And this is coming from someone who loves anime and japanese culture. I can totally see where he comes from.
