so back in the day, the soviet union made an anti-aggression treaty w/ nazi germany complete with a secret protocol covering which european countries were in the two's sphere's of interest and poland fell in germany's and finland (who was a former part of the ussr) fell in the ussr's and when the ussr kept trying to get finland to move their borders to the ussr's advantage finland was just "what no," and then russia blamed an assassination of one of their people on finland (although historians think that russia actually killed him themselves so they could have a reason to get mad at finland hi and welcome to history =v=) and finland of course was just "what no where are you even getting this shit from," again but out of the blue the ussr attacked which violated not one, not two, but three non-aggression treaties between itself and finland which not only got it kicked out of the league of nations but also started the war they were waiting for and okay
the soviet union outnumbered finland like three to one bUT stalin decided to go batshit crazy as usual and kill a bunch of 'suspect' citizens in the great purge (the government sort of required that the people were in fear in order for it to function so they made up some reason to kill more than a million people to keep their people in order mein gott it's just like the book 1984) which left their army with less experienced and less competent (but more loyal!) officers and decreased the russian armie's morale even before the fighting began and of course boosted finland's morale and the conquest that the ussr thought would take two weeks tops took three months because finland wouldn't go down as easy as they thought and eventually it was settled with a peace treaty where finland moved it's borders but significantly less so that was first desired and that is the rough summary of the Winter War between Finland and the USSR from 1939-1940!
