the phrase “curiosity killed the cat” is actually not the full phrase it actually is “curiosity killed the cat but satisfaction brought it back” so don’t let anyone tell you not to be a curious little baby okay go and be interested in the world uwu

Blood is thicker than water The blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb.
Meaning that relationships formed by choice are stronger than those formed by birth.
Let’s not forget that “Jack of all trades, master of none” ends with “But better than a master of one.”
It means that being equally good/average at everything is much better than being perfect at one thing and sucking at everything else. So don’t worry if you’re not perfect at something you do! Being okay is better!
These made me feel better
Also, “great minds think alike” ends with “but fools rarely differ”
It goes to show that conformity isn’t always a good thing. And that just because more than one person has the same idea, doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a good idea.
what the fuck why haven’t i heard the full version to any of these
“Birds of a feather flock together” ends with “until the cat comes.”
It’s actually a warning about fair-weather friends, not an assessment of how complementary people are.
I’ve always felt like these were cut down on purpose.
I really like these phrases and plan on spreading this knowledge.
The early bird catches the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese.
I want to make designs out of these.
Funny how all the half-finished ones encourage uniformity and upholding the status-quo, while the complete proverbs encourage like…living exciting, eclectic lives driven by choice and personal passion.
NICE
The legendary thread is back
IT’S FUCKING BACK!!!!!!!!
This one is perfect for Tumblr: “A little knowledge is a dangerous thing…” ends with “drink deep, or taste not the Pierian spring: there shallow draughts intoxicate the brain, and drinking largely sobers us again.”
So, it’s not that knowledge is dangerous, the emphasis is on having just a little knowledge. Having just a cursory understanding of something causes overconfidence and potential to misunderstand, but when you really delve into a subject in depth you realize the full complexity of it.
Yeah these are DEFINITELY cut short for a reason, make no fucking mistake.
I think some of these are expansions upon shorter original proverbs because somebody disagreed with the originals. Not all, I’m positive, but some, though without poking at every single one of them, I couldn’t say with any accuracy which.
I’m most sure of that with is “blood is thicker than water”. Like. Have you met a certain flavor of abusive family member? If the answer is no, I am glad for you; a lot of us were not that fortunate. Also that one’s documented as is in English in 1737 and the longer one possibly not till 1994.
And “satisfaction brought it back” really rings like some smartass kid one-upping whoever was trying to get rid of the curious pest. Good for that kid! Both phrases are documented as is in English within a couple years of 1900, though, so while the shorter one was documented earlier and may well have come first, esp if it evolved from the phrase “care killed the cat” that turns up as early as Shakespeare, I’m not positive we know that it did come first.
The one @drgrlfriend points out, though, that is definitely longer in the original. Alexander Pope, “An Essay on Criticism”. There’s rather more than those four lines, but adding more context doesn’t really change how those four lines read—and if you only quote those four lines, at least you’re quoting the complete sentence! That first line in the original reads “a little learning is a dangerous thing”, modulo Pope being very 1700s about capitalization and spelling, but if people must misquote then I almost prefer the “knowledge” variant. (Not honestly sure which is scarier, people who think knowing things is okay and learning things isn’t, or people who think knowing things isn’t okay. Anti-intellectualism can, in any event, go hang.)
i made another quiz! find out whether you're the vampire who owns a large castle rumoured to be hunted or the mortal ingenue they invite to dine with them on the opposite edges of a ridiculously long table

rick riordan off the shits
rick riordan made his bones with pretty vanilla YA fantasy and then when he was too successful to stop hit em with the Muslim valkyries and the genderfluid homeless teenagers
Rick Riordan’s “vanilla YA fantasy” series was written for his son with ADHD and dyslexia because there weren’t any books about kids with learning disorders. He “made his bones” on representation, you just didn’t notice because disabled people don’t count.
[image: tweet by camphalfblood, containing a screenshot of a comment addressed to Rick Riordan, which Riordan has highlighted portions of in yellow and marked substitute phrases in connected boxes. these are transcribed separately below:
tweet: “Here you go, random commenter. I fixed it for you! And thanks for your concern, but I am quite happy with my sales! 😀 #AllKidsDeserveRepresentation”.
original comment: “If you had less gender dysphoria in your ‘kids books’ you might sell more … remember, it is parents who buy them.”
comment with Riordan’s phrases substituted: “If you had zero acknowledgement that some kids are not straight and cisgender in your books that include marginalized people I don’t want my children to know about until they are eighteen, you might appease homophobic adults who think gender identity is contagious … remember, it is parents who model bigotry for their kids.”]
i’m not going to make movies that tell children, “you should despair and run away”. i would like to make a film to tell children “it’s good to be alive”. - hayao miyazaki
This is the way you’re supposed to do pranks!
I try SO hard not to make faces when I hear someone around me say wild shit but I just can’t stop myself
First it should be noted, you will almost definitely need to have terraforming unlocked to be able to do this, since I don’t think there’s a high probability of finding this layout naturally occurring on the map!
If you have any questions feel free to send an ask!
Enjoy!
Writing Prompt #529
In the general’s youth, the kingdom had been one; perhaps rife with troubles, but she had known a full belly and the unfettered love of another of one of her fellow soldiers. The two girls had foolishly prattled on about a future together, imagining luxury and duty and love.
But the kingdom fell to ruin, bitter in-fighting splitting not only the land apart, but the two lovers. And now, as two separate crowns battled for what each believed was rightfully theirs, each woman lead their respective army, hearts dripping with blood alongside with the bodies they slew.
i’ve been doing my homework on how to break into a writing career and honestly. there’s a Lot that i didn’t know about thats critical to a writing career in this day and age, and on the one hand, its understandable because we’re experiencing a massive cultural shift, but on the other hand, writers who do not have formal training in school or don’t have the connections to learn more via social osmosis end up extremely out of loop and working at a disadvantage.
like, i didnt know about twitter pitch parties!! i didnt know about literary agents and publishers tweeting their manuscript wishlist, in hopes that some poor soul out there has written the book they really want to read and publish!! this isnt some shit you learn about in school! you really need to know the ins and outs of the writing community to be successful!
for anyone interested, here’s what i’ve learned so far in my quest for more writing knowledge:
1. Writer’s Market 2019 is a great place to start– it gives you a list of magazines and journals that you can send your work to depending on the genre as well as lists a shit ton of literary agents that specify what genres they represent, how you can get in contact with them and how they accept query letters. this is a book that updates every year and tbh i only bought it this year so i dont know how critical it is to have an updated version
2. do your research. mostly on literary agents because if you listed on your site that you like to represent fluffy YA novels and some asshole sends you a 80k manuscript about like…gritty viking culture, you will be severely pissed off. always go in finding someone who you know will actually like your work because they’re the ones who will try to advocate for you in getting published.
3. learn how to write a query letter. there are slightly varying formulas to how you can write an effective query letter. you’re also going to want to get feedback on your query letter because its the first thing the literary agent will read and based on how well you do it, it could be the difference between them rejecting you outright and giving your manuscript a quick read
4. unfortunately, you’re gonna want to get a twitter. Twitter is where a lot of literary agents are nowadays, and they host things like twitter pitch parties, where you pitch your manuscript in a few sentences and hashtag it with #Pitmad #Pitdark, some version of pit. a lot of literary agents and publishers will ALSO post their manuscript wishlists, which is just the kind of books they’d like to represent/publish, and they hashtag this with #MSWL (it is NOT for writers to use, only for agents/publishers)
5. connect with other writers, literary agents, publishers at book events. you will absolutely need the connections if you want to get ahead as a writer. thats just kind of the state of the world.
Important info is important -.-
UPDATE: so i just got signed by an agent bc of twitter pitch parties. for any aspiring writers, you dont HAVE to go the twitter pitch party route, its just another way to get noticed a bit faster
