Weird peeve time. Calling lab grown gemstones “fake” is stupid because it’s the same shit just not formed naturally. An artificially grown diamond is the same shit as a natural diamond it is the exact same material bro it’s all fuckign carbon

It’s carbon it’s pretty and it didn’t involve slave labor what’s not to love??? Hi I’m having geology opinions tonight apparently. And I’m right

There is so much bullshit in the diamonds industry to be mad about tbh. It also ties into the bullshit of the wedding industry as a whole but we don’t have the time to unpack all that

not even going to lie, the day i learned i could get like 15 lab grown rubies the size of dimes for $20 is the day i spent $20 on rubies, and i have never once said to myself “man, i wish this cost $1,600 and the lives of eight children to produce”

We are a pro-lab-grown mineral blog here, not only is it massively cheaper but massively more ethical as well in many cases.

another very cool lab grown gem is Moissanite. It has a 9.25 on the mohs hardness scale where diamond is a 10. Moissanote also has a 2.69 refractive index in comparison to diamond’s 2.419 and here is the difference

and the best thing about moissanite? It is all lab grown and it costs only a fraction of what diamond costs. So fuck the diamond indsutry and buy lab grown gems which cost significantly less

Also it’s just cool to think of some mad scientist lookin person doing shit against the law of the universe and making pretty gems for you. Like cmon. This shouldnt be allowed probably. But humans really be like on gOD i want some shiny an just started MAKIN em

for years people wanted alchemy, well now we have alchemy and we’re making gemstones out of it and suddenly “it doesn’t count” anymore

4) we get excited when our date buys us an appetizer, we don’t even comprehend people buying us rocks that would force us into debt for ten years

5) They aren’t actually that rare and the price is artificially inflated.

Pro tip from a former Jared’s salesperson: You want a sparkly white rock that will look like a diamond to the untrained eye and will literally cost the price of a nice dinner for two? Created white sapphire. They’re lab grown and cost *pennies* to make, so you can get a 1 or 2 carat white sapphire for like… $30-80 probably. You can get one as huge as you like, perfectly clear, perfectly flawless. And no one will ever be able to tell the difference except a professional appraiser. Also, sapphires are the second-hardest gemstone (right after diamonds) so they are very durable! Very unlikely that they’ll chip or crack. Get that bitch set in sterling silver and you are GOOD TO GO. Whole thing should cost you less than $200 unless you get a fancy band with a lot of extra stones. Of course, created sapphires come in every color of the rainbow, so if you want something more exciting than plain white, you TOTALLY CAN.

Created sapphires and silver: The poor Millennial’s engagement ring.

THANK YOU EX-JARED’S BASED GOD.

engagement rings: HACKED

Get a ring from an antique store. They’re usually less than $100, you know they hold up over time, no one else will have one like it, and it comes with the bonus of being haunted by the spirit of some old woman named Edith probably.

Tiger’s eye: $47 bucks on etsy. Propose to your elderich horror with a ring she deserves.

Rose quarts rose ring? 43 bucks. Symbol of love. Looks like a ring pop. Win-win.

Druzy quartz 40 bucks. Cant pick a color? Go with all of them. Neat texture.

Snowflake obsidian? 20 bucks. Made from the fires of the Earth’s molten core. Pretty dope conversation starter.

Jade 15-30 bucks. Literally has a history of inner peace and spiritual awakening. Good gentle reminder not to kill your spouse.

SO PRETTY

Could give me a rock u found on the floor and thought I’d like and I would genuinely be ecstatic

This

i have a friend who puts pebbles from gravel driveways and parks through a rock tumbler and makes jewelry out of them. They’re all really pretty-

the quartz ones are so pretty oh my gods

Moonstone

May I suggest:

Opals.

Rainbow
Unique
Inexpensive
Certain places let you pan for your own and you can keep them

always reblog for opals. its a mini galaxy you can carry with you on your finger

The quartz ones are beautiful but they will shatter if your intended talks with their hands and accidentally backhands a doorframe while wearing it.

And I am absolutely not speaking from experience

A tip on the opal jewelry: Be wary of sudden temperature changes, like going from inside of a warm house into cold winter air, they’re very sensitive to temperature change and may crack or shatter.

Anyway, do you guys want to see my Cool Rocks?

This is my grandfather’s rock.  It is Probably a Garnet, which he mined out himself when he was in college studying to be a geologist.

Though you may assume this is a Small Rock, it is in fact a very Large Rock, and also a very Heavy Rock, but most especially a very Square Rock, which is what makes it particularly cool.

Here we have a rock which used to be a tree.  This rock is petrified wood!  It was one of my very first Cool Rocks!

Speaking of rocks that used to be things that were not rocks, this rock is Petoskey stone!  This rock used to be a coral.  Let’s get a good look at those patterns.

Now that’s a Cool Rock!

Amethyst?  It’s an Okay Rock.  If you are looking for an inexpensive rock to start your collection, amethyst is the way to go.  It’s a quartz with a deep purple color.  A very nice, if average, rock.

Now citrine… Citrine is a Cool Rock!  It’s a smoky quartz with a lovely honey color.  The druzy on my chunk of citrine has a wonderful sparkle.

This is my Amazonite!  It grew that hexagon shape all by itself!!  This specimen is from Colorado.

Look at this shiny little slice of rock!  This rock is Tiger Iron, and those bands of red and orange glow beautifully with some light behind them.  These different colored bands are made from Hematite (the dark silver), Jasper (the red-orange), and Tiger-Eye quartz (the yellow-orange).

Here’s a rock you’ve probably seen before!  This Cool Rock is Malachite.  The patterns and rings are from the stalagmites this little egg was carved from.

Whoa, look at this giant slab of Extremely Cool Rock!!!  These crystals formed in the cracks of fossilized mud, to make the awesome patterns in this geode of Septarian!  This is my second best rock.

This is my Best and most Favorite Cool Rock.  In this dark room it’s a dull little grey rock, but if I move it closer to the light…

Those glints of gold!  Those veins of blue!  This rock is most certainly Labradorite, which changes color spectacularly when the light hits it just right.  Let’s put it in direct sunlight.

Yes!!  YES!!  There it is!!  The Best and Coolest Rock!!!!!

If you create multiple gemsonas you probably don’t want every single character’s name to end in “-ite” (the suffix derived from the Greek word for stone, lithos). I combed several lists of gems and minerals to compile this list of non-ite names. Note that some of these are synonyms, trade names, or outdated names, so purists beware.

if you want to buy moonstone jewelry like…please be aware that half the people on etsy and wherever selling “moonstone” jewelry are actually selling you opalite which is just….glass with added effects. moonstone and opalite are not the same thing lol….so many people are getting ripped off on etsy because of this and it kind of bothers me

this is real, natural “rainbow” moonstone:

this is opalite, which is synthetic opalised glass:

I’ve been trying to warn people about this for years! It’s such a huge issue, just like heat-treated amethyst being sold as ‘citrine.’

Obsessed with these labradorite coffins that the wonderful @earthandbone cut for me! I already have a few pieces lined up with these beauties that I’ll be working on tomorrow. Can’t wait to show you all what’s in store, but for now I’m curling up with a book and hitting the hay early. Back at the bench before sunrise tomorrow! Goodnight, everyone. 🌙🔮💎
