Overview of some topics when it comes to drawing characters who are burn survivors.

DISCLAIMER. Please keep in mind that this is an introductory overview for drawing some burn scars and has a lot of generalizations in it, so not every “X is Z” statement will be true for Actual People. I'm calling this introductory because I hope to get people to actually do their own research before drawing disabled & visibly different characters rather than just making stuff up. Think of it as a starting point and take it with a grain of salt (especially if you have a very different art style from mine).

Talking about research and learning... don't make your burn survivor characters evil. Burn survivors are normal people and don't deserve to be constantly portrayed in such a way.

edit: apparently tum "queerest place on the internet" blr hates disabled people so much that this post got automatically filtered. cool!

How are people seeing this post where I specifically talk about burn survivors being normal, real people, and still tag this as "TW body horror"? Not a single one of these drawings or pictures is a fresh injury. All of them are healed. How the hell would you feel if someone tagged a photo of you as "trigger warning: gore"?

Disabled people are not your fucking body horror. Grow up.

does anyone know if i can like block sites from appearing in my google images searches??? i keep getting those awful ai generated things with a hand coming out of a man's neck and just straight up not what i was looking for, because this was in a search for "curly hair in medieval paintings". it happens every time i search for anything vaguely art-reference-like and it's so fucking annoying and it clutters my search results so much. i don't wanna add specific commands to the query every time too, what i need is like a browser extension or something

I made a list of as many ai sites i could find to block with ublacklist, just copy and paste them in ublacklist's options menu

"SOOOOO... WHAT IF WE KISSED...?" PROMPTS * assorted dialogue for tossing out the idea of being in a relationship or just kissing and seeing what happens after, adjust as necessary
  • i hear you're a good kisser.
  • are you staring at my lips?
  • how about a kiss for old time's sake?
  • maybe we could experiment a little.
  • have you ever thought about kissing me?
  • is there even an "us?"
  • a little bird told me you're a really good kisser.
  • could you see me as... more than just a friend?
  • what's a little fooling around between friends?
  • i'll admit, i have thought about you like that.
  • kissing you sounds like a very good idea.
  • i've been meaning to ask you out for ages.
  • maybe we could... see what happens.
  • there's no harm in a little experimentation.
  • did you want to kiss me back then?
  • for what it's worth, i really enjoyed the kiss and i wouldn't mind doing that again sometime.
  • could we pretend this is our first kiss?
  • maybe we could go on a date sometime.
  • you could start by coming closer.
  • just wondering what you taste like.
  • i saw you looking at me earlier.
  • could we talk about... us?
  • i'm not interested in anyone but you.
  • i bet if we tried, we could make it work.
  • a kiss won't kill us.
  • wanna makeout?
  • quick, kiss me before they walk over here.
  • i've wanted to kiss you for a long time now.
  • i never had the courage to ask you if you'd kiss me.
  • could i keep seeing you after this?
  • i really enjoyed it, by the way.
  • you're a much better kisser than i expected.
  • well, that got out of hand quickly.
  • maybe we should redo our first kiss.
  • next time, we should make it a date.
  • can i kiss you?
  • kissing sounds really fun right now.
  • have you been kissed before?
  • i never liked kissing until you.
  • you are... unbelievably good at that.
  • give me a minute to catch my breath.
  • your heart is racing.
  • are you okay? you look very flustered.
  • are my cheeks burning?
  • figured we're both about to die, so what the hell.

i just think that, maybe, its a bad idea to tell someone with intrusive thoughts that if they "keep thinking that way" theyre going to "manifest it" because uh. cant actually control that, chief, and youve just made it worse <3

Stranger on the internet here to affirm that you are not going to “manifest” anything. Intrusive thoughts suck but they are also just thoughts. They can’t hurt you/others and are not more likely to happen just because you think them.

anyways take heat waves seriously. heat strokes and heat exhaustion are real. drink water. wear sunscreen. stay covered or in shaded areas if you can. pay attention to your skin - if it’s super flushed and your face is redder than usual, get under some shade and cool down IMMEDIATELY. pay attention to kids and elders too.

Originally put this in the tags but I think it might be more useful as a reblog. Anyway short tips from someone who regularly deals with 100°F+ weather in the summer. I use these when the AC goes out or it's so hot that the max air setting still outputs warm air:

  • if you dont have blackout curtains, put tinfoil on your windows. you can use a little water on the glass to stick it on there like vinyl to reflect the sun back out. You don't need to measure it perfectly, just sticking kitchen foil over the glass is enough
  • take bowls of ice and set them around the room you're trying to keep the coolest. Ice set in front of a fan can also help.
  • dehumidifier. now.
  • if you have carpets or rugs on the floor that are removable consider rolling them up for a little while. hard floors can be cold and nice on feet.
  • cold wet bandanna around the forehead and if desperate: cold wet socks
  • Electronics Generate Heat. Maybe not a huge amount but if you have a gaming computer or laptop that outputs a lot of hot air, it will heat the room even if you think its too little or too slow to notice
  • drink water like your life depends on it because in some cases. it will.
  • you are more vunerable to heat if you take meds that are SSRIs. you need more water and more caution if you do.

What to do if you suddenly find yourself homeless

FOOD

  • Find your nearest food bank or mission, for food
  • grocery stores with free samples, bakeries + stores with day-old bread
  • different fast food outlets have cheaper food and will generally let you hang out for a while.
  • some dollar stores carry food like cans of beans or fruit

SHELTER

  • Sleeping at beaches during the day is a good way to avoid suspicion and harassment
  • sleep with your bag strapped to you, so someone can’t steal it
  • Some churches offer short term residence
  • Find your nearest homeless shelter
  • Look for places that are open to the public
  • A large dumpster near a wall can often be moved so that flipping up the lids creates an angled shelter to stay dry

HYGIENE

  • A membership to the YMCA is usually only 10$, which has a shower, and sometimes laundry machines and lockers.
  • Public libraries have bathrooms you can use
  • Dollar stores carry low-end soaps and deodorant etc.
  • Wet wipes are all purpose and a life saver
  • Local beaches, go for a quick swim
  • Some truck stops have showers you can pay for
  • Staying clean is the best way to prevent disease, and potentially get a job to get back on your feet
  • Pack 7 pairs of socks/undies, 2 outfits, and one hooded rain jacket

OTHER

  • first aid kit
  •  sunscreen
  •  a travel alarm clock or watch
  •  mylar emergency blanket
  •  a backpack is a must
  •  downgrade your cellphone to a pay as you go with top-up cards
  •  sleeping bag
  •  travel kit of toothbrush, hair brush/comb, mirror
  •  swiss army knife
  •  can opener

There's a group of Sudanese refugees who were under the 'care' of the UNHCR's Ethiopia chapter after having been displaced to Sudan's Ethiopia borders by RSF ethnic cleansing. Once settled in the refugee camp at the border, not only were they constantly at an unresolved shortage of food and water, but they were frequently attacked and robbed of what little they had by militias. The refugees repeatedly appealed to the Ethiopian government and UNHCR for help and relocation to a safer area to no avail. Sara here explains this situation in full. They were forced to relocate on their own, but the Ethiopian government wouldn't allow them further inland, so they were forced to settle in the wilderness near the borders. These conditions are extremely unsafe and unsanitary and there are pregnant woman in the camp, some of whom have just given birth.

What you can do to help them: If you have Twitter, if you have IG, shame the UNHCR, tag UNHCR_ethiopia tag the U.N., shame the U.N. Make a social media storm. Pressure them and shame them into acting in the interests of these refugees and countless others. Follow the account I've linked twice. Follow who she tells you to follow. Stay up to date and stay active and reactive. No complacency for Sudan.

Donate here to help them out! They're so close to their goal!

I'm just gonna slide this on in here for anyone that is interested in preserving old games. They take it very seriously too, they want an archive of every single game. Like, they have lists of every game ever released for a system, and once that system gets old enough, they add it to their archive and start collecting. Their latest addition was the Xbox 360, they opened that vault up in September 2022, and proudly announced they'd finished their collection of games for it back in April.

Also, while their game archives are almost entirely complete, they've got another project of archiving the manuals that came with those games, and that is... considerably less well filled out. Their collection of Xbox 360 manuals is especially rough, they've only gotten manuals for three games. So if you've got some Xbox 360 games kicking around, and the manual's still with them, please consider scanning them and submitting them to the site!

Game preservation is important, but people rarely consider preserving the manuals as well; I really respect Vimm's Lair for being so thorough in their archival work.

I've been using Vimm's Lair for years, I have yet to see a single bad link or virus on the entire site. It's arguably the safest and most comprehensive archive of video games in existence. Preserved history

Movie: Jenin Jenin

I think about her every day.

Please take some time and watch Jenin, Jenin. It is available with English subtitles on YouTube.

The film documents the aftermath of the 2002 Israeli operation "Defensive Shield" in which Israel invaded the Jenin camp, killing its people and levelling its homes to the ground.

This documentary is a must watch for everyone, but especially if you are in the initial learning stage of understanding the Palestinian struggle.

I've had this little idea in my head for a while now, so I decided to sit down and plot it out.

Disclaimer: This isn't meant to be some sort of One-Worksheet-Fits-All situation. This is meant to be a visual representation of some type of story planning you could be doing in order to develop a plot!

Lay down groundwork! (Backstory integral to the beginning of your story.) Build hinges. (Events that hinge on other events and fall down like dominoes) Suspend structures. (Withhold just enough information to make the reader curious, and keep them guessing.)

And hey, is this helps... maybe sit down and write a story! :)
