“Stolas is too much! Stolas is cringe! Stolas is acting self-absorbed!”

Yeah he is. Because his development stalled out in childhood. He’s a giant people pleaser (“Well, if it’s what you want to play.”) who spent all his teenage years being a dutiful son and future spouse to Stella. He’s in the throes of finding himself; he’s coming of age, but he’s doing it in adulthood. Coming of age stories are messy, and yet: the process these characters go through is necessary!

He’s put himself on hold for too long and his needs are bursting out of him: to be sexually fulfilled, to experience the joy of acting on a crush, to finally tell Stella to get the fuck away from him they are having The Divorce! These needs don’t come out sanitized and smoothed out and calm. Who could expect them to? He’s been starving himself; he’s ravenous.

Stolas is doing his best trying to explore himself while balancing Octavia and Blitz’s needs. And sometimes it’s extra difficult because Octavia and Blitz tend to be close-lipped about their concerns until they hit a breaking point. He truly cares for these people in his life; he’s devastated to hurt them. He doesn’t know how to navigate the world, because his absentee father never taught him and actively stifled him by laying out his entire future.

This man is flying blind—no positive experience to fall back on and no friends or family he can process his feelings/life circumstances with. He’s incredibly resilient and emotionally open despite this. The fact that he can reflect by himself and come to some of the mature understandings and decisions he does (getting the crystal for Blitz, realizing he was leaning too hard into a romantic fantasy, apologizing to Octavia for his unintentional missteps, validating her fears while expressing his love) is beyond impressive.

So many people in this fandom have ZERO empathy for repressed adults and it shows. I mean, good for you, you never got to experience half the shit that Stolas did. But arrested development isn't just a quirky TV show, it's an actual psychological phenomenon. Also the fact that Stolas is coded autistic just heaps on more ableism, yay!

YESSS THANK YOU!!! For 20 years his strategy has been to just survive, to let himself go numb and take whatever abuse is thrown at him so he can be the man everyone expects him to be, and so that Via can grow up happy. He shields her from knowing the full extent of Stella's cruelty, which also means switching at a moment's notice from being screamed at to a sunny "Good morning, darling!" The poor man is exhausted and still relearning what it means to have any desires and feelings outside the expectations on him.

This post and Stolas’s whole deal also resonates for me bc going away to college was like flipping a switch that finally allowed me to identify as queer!!! And a few years later, to come out as trans! Like I had these feelings and thoughts before, but I didn't even allow myself to put a name to them until I was in a safer place to explore. And from an outside perspective, it doubtless seemed that several key things about me changed overnight, even though I'd been wrestling with them for years.

When you finally get to express those things after 18, 20, 30 years of not acknowledging them, you sort of WANT to be too much! You want to wear all the clothes you didn't get to before, you want to kiss a lot of people and have all those milestones your peers had years ago. You want to TALK about it, all these weird and wonderful new things you're discovering, and sometimes it's hard to rein it in.

So yes, Stolas absolutely hurt people he cared about bc he was overwhelmed with all the new things he was experiencing. He pushed too hard, lost sight of others' feelings (which, as OP pointed out, were hard enough for him to figure out in the first place), and disregarded boundaries he should have seen or accepted because he was thinking about the wants and needs he could finally express. He isn't perfect, but his actions, his mistakes, the ways he hurt people are certainly understandable.

I am such a huge horse nerd and I apologize. :( But I’m really tired of seeing girths that are halfway down a horse’s stomach. This may not be interesting to anyone who is not me, but I like to draw fancy saddles and ridiculously long shanks on bits. Also, horses are the only animal I can draw, so I take advantage of that.

I hope this helps some frustrated non-horsey artists in at least some small way. Remember, when in doubt, add some buckles and some rings. :)
