How long did Lan Wangji wander and how many towns did he canvass before surrendering to his impossible search for Wei Ying? Did it feel like a betrayal when he finally went back to Gusu? I imagine his first step after those three years was to go back to the end. Ascending the stairs of Nightless City, frozen again at the edge of the cliff, staring at the yawning darkness below, unable to stop hearing “Lan Zhan, let me go” over and over and over in an echo chamber of despair and hopelessness. But with all of his time spent isolated in Cold Pond Cave, his punishments still a dull ache on his back, he must have thought of his moment and forced himself to look there at the ground below. When he finally left, did strangers see it in his eyes as his gaze flickered to them and away again, moving quickly on to the next, hoping to recognize something. Could they see the ache for the unanswered questions left at the bottom of that precipice?
