I don't know why the writers are hinting towards Nandor having romantic interest in The Guide but honestly, I'm not too worried.

May I remind you that Nandor has a pattern of romanticizing people and briefly settling in toxic relationships when he is lonely and depressed.

  • He liked Meg simply because she gave him good customer service.
  • He adored Gail who strung him along for decades and tossed him aside like he was nothing as soon as she was turned.
  • He joined a cult and slept with Jan who was manipulating and brainwashing him when he was most vulnerable and emotionally unstable.
  • He selected Marwa to marry because she was the wife that least threatened his ego and then wished her to have zero free will, changed her personality and transformed her into an entirely new person.
  • He became obsessed with Freddie simply because he was Guillermo's boyfriend and since he was miserable in his own relationship, he sabotaged Guillermo's relationship.

My point is Nandor's coping mechanism for his eternal loneliness and losing Guillermo is seeking out shallow relationships. We only have 5 episodes left and the writers must be planting seeds for a reason. I just can't imagine the writers being this careless and pairing Nandor with The Guide last minute. Keep in mind, the writers were green lit for seasons 5 and 6 at the same time. If they were really going to scrap Nandermo and push Nandor and The Guide, then it would have made more sense to plant seeds of a budding relationship between the two at the beginning of season 5. So why now?

As much as I like The Guide and Kristen Schaal, her character has always been a plot device. In my opinion, her entire story arch in season 5 was for the writers to have a reason as to why Nandor would be in a cage when Guillermo confesses to betraying him. Nandor needed to be restrained somehow in that moment to prevent him from killing Guillermo right then and there.

My prediction is that if Nandor makes a move on The Guide then she will be the one to call him out for only showing interest in her because he's lonely. I'd like to think that The Guide has enough self-respect to not reciprocate (I admit that I haven't watched 6x06 yet) since he was so aloof and rude to her all last season and barely had any memorable or meaningful interactions with her in earlier seasons. Maybe if Nandor is called out, he'll realize the error of his ways and admit that what he truly wants is Guillermo.

nandor seeing guillermo being praised by jordan and deciding to tell guillermo he’s proud of him, that jordan is right to like him so much, as a desperate attempt to show him he can be like jordan too. he knows guillermo is pulling away and has been for a while now

nandor choosing scarborough fair to be played on the radio, a medieval song about unrequited love where the man expects the woman to perform impossible tasks, and then she’ll be his true love. simon and garfunkel’s version also heavily features war imagery, referencing a general giving orders to his soldiers who fight for a cause they long ago forgot. he then later plays a classic breakup song by jojo, which is a fucking hilarious gag for starters and very nandor, but it is about a spurned lover who believed her partner’s lies and were promised forever only to be let down. it’s also specifically about being cheated on, which says a lot about how nandor feels about guillermo and jordan

nandor being so hurt that he regressed back into his former self, the warlord, wearing literal armour to block out everything, ordering guillermo away as he’s the enemy. he becomes cold and brutal in the face of heartbreak. he took this blow so hard and felt it was the only way to protect himself and lash out in the process, wanting to make the company pay for taking guillermo away from him and also causing him to lose his job which had genuinely given him purpose and enjoyment

guillermo saying that their purposes are leading them in different directions and that’s okay, but neither acknowledging that they’re just grasping at straws because they don’t know what they want anymore. or rather they do, but they don’t know how to face it, how to discuss it, how to begin to unpack it. guillermo wanted vampirism until he realised what he’d have to do and give up, and nandor really did want guillermo by his side until he had to show guillermo a kindness and let him keep his humanity — a choice we know nandor wishes he could have, given his past pursuits of humanity himself

if they stepped back and looked at it, their paths are conjoined, and though they’re diverted now they will merge again because they both have what the other wants if they’d just open their fucking eyes and figure out where they go from here, how they make it work

fuck me man

not to mention their argument being paralleled by nadja and laszlo’s argument where nadja tells him she doesn’t always need him to be the hero, and she’s pissed off because he didn’t communicate with her. they sort it out so fast because laszlo listens and apologises, and they end up back on the same page. laszlo also remarks in this scene that it’s been ages since they had any time alone together, which mirrors how nandor and guillermo have been drifting and gaining more “space”. i do love it when they use the married vampires as a direct mirror for nandermo lmao it always hits so much harder 🥰

The thing I think Guillermo doesn't fully get and Nandor can't quite say is that it wasn't about the JOB. Not really. It's about Nandor's place in Guillermo’s life. He feels cast aside! He and Guillermo didn't talk for months after the ceremony. He invited Guillermo into the house as an equal and by the way they all treat him now, that was never rescinded. But Guillermo didn't want to stay with them, he wanted distance. Then he went out into the big wide world and got a job, and Nandor followed because he just wanted to be close to him again. To be allowed to exist in his periphery. To still have a place in his life, even if it was different now. To spend whatever time he can around him.

After all, he once thought they would have eternity, and now they only get a few more decades.
