Fun facts about lipstick!!!
- Lipstick might have implied that you were a prostitute: During early greek empire wearing lip paint or red lipstick suggested that you were a prostitute since women commonly didn’t wear makeup during that time period. (x)
- There was almost a ban on lipstick: In 1650, Parliament attempted to ban lipstick as it was seen as a “vice to painting,” but inevitably the bill did not pass. (x )
- Lipstick was an indicator of social rank: During the roman empire, lipstick was used to indicate social status. Even men wore it to suggest rank. (x)
- Some thought that wearing lipstick should be punishable by law: In 1915, a bill was introduced into Kansas legislature that would make it a misdemeanor for women under 44 to wear lipstick because it created a “false impression.” (x)
- During the European dark ages, lipstick was said to stop natural circulation of blood to the face, thus deeming it unhealthy. It was also seen as un-religious by the christian church. (x)
- Cosmetics was used in ancient egypt not only as a form of making one more beautiful, but as a way of protecting themselves from the sun. (x)
