also, while we’re at it?

and not only that, but the first RECORDED WRITER IN HUMAN HISTORY? was a woman.

trust no one who tells you that we haven’t always been here

At your battle-cry, my lady, the foreign lands bow low. When humanity comes before you in awed silence at the terrifying radiance and tempest, you grasp the most terrible of all the divine powers. Because of you, the threshold of tears is opened, and people walk along the path of the house of great lamentations. In the van of battle, all is struck down before you. With your strength, my lady, teeth can crush flint. You charge forward like a charging storm. You roar with the roaring storm, you continually thunder with Iškur. You spread exhaustion with the stormwinds, while your own feet remain tireless. With the lamenting balaĝ drum a lament is struck up.

My lady, the great Anuna gods fly from you to the ruin mounds like scudding bats. They dare not stand before your terrible gaze. They dare not confront your terrible countenance. Who can cool your raging heart? Your malevolent anger is too great to cool. Lady, can your mood be soothed? Lady, can your heart be gladdened? Eldest daughter of Suen, your rage cannot be cooled!

This is slightly off topic for a non-themed week, and of course, it’s literature, but I couldn’t resist sharing this little history snippet with you all.

Has your cat ever walked across your keyboard? Well, it’s not a new problem. Medieval book historian Erik Kwakkel recently Tweeted this photo of a 15th century book with… you guessed it… cat paw prints in ink on the pages! We’re part of a long and glorious historical movement, friends. (Source: Dr. Marty Becker)

Not sure if this will help anyone like it helped me, but I think this is a good image for today.

Life will go on.

Goodness will be found.

And the good guys will always, always outnumber the bad. Even if it doesn't always seem that way.

I promise.

Maria Lokke looks into “A Secret History of Women and Tattoo”: “Though tattoos are an increasingly common, and visible, element of personal style these days, it’s some of the more hidden and historic examples—from Victorian women to circus attractions—that are the most surprising.”

Books were expensive during the Middle Ages: they cost as much as a small cattle of cows. So to avoid thieves in the colleges and universities’ libraries, books had to be chained to the bookshelves, which also enabled it to remain at the good place.

What the fuck - GIVEAWAY?

That’s right, my darlings, your old pal Grendel is hosting a Giveaway! I’ve accumulated an impressive number of followers here on WTFhistory, and I’m so, so glad you’re all here. So I just had to do something to show my appreciation.

General info:

  • A Grand Prize winner and two runners-up will be chosen via a randomizer.
  • I will ship anywhere that’s under, like, $20. I’m shipping from the U.S. so I’ll leave it to you to check on that. (Does it get that high? I don’t know. I’m just tossing it out there.)
  • You must be willing to give me your address… ya’ know, so I can give you your stuff.
  • Winners will be notified via askbox, so be sure that’s open.
  • If you win and do not respond within a week, a new winner will be chosen.

Rules:

  • Must be following WTFhistory. This is a gift to the loyal wonderful people who have been with me for a while. And to reflect this I will be weighting the contest - people who were following me before I posted this giveaway have each like and reblog count for two, while people following me after this count for one each.
  • That doesn’t mean don’t try it if you want to. Hey, maybe you found WTFhistory that way and like it for its own sake, and then you’ll be in the weighted group for the next giveaway! And you could still win this one. Worth a shot.
  • Reblog as many times as you wish. But please tag it so that anyone who doesn’t want to see it doesn’t have to get spammed.
  • Likes count.

So what could you get?

  • Grand prize winner will receive a Medieval Knights papercraft fighting game. It’s new but has already been opened because I’ll be using it as a graphic in an upcoming rant. Sorry about that. (If you don’t want it I’ll just keep it because it is fucking awesome like you don’t even KNOW, so… yah.) I’ve only made two of the crafts though, and I’ll unfold them for you so you can have them back. The others are untouched.
  • Grand prize winner will also receive first pick of three fabulous history books, seen above.
  • First runner-up will get the second pick of the books.
  • Second runner-up will receive the last (still undoubtably awesome) book.
  • All books will be annotated by Grendel herself, chock full of annoying commentary, vulgarity, and random off-topic doodles!

Winners will be chosen on March 1st!

Go forth my children. Go forth and reblog!

Boosting for anyone who missed it (late) last night.

Anonymous asked:

Hi, what are some of your favourite books? (fiction or non-fiction) And where did you learn all you know about history?

Good question!

I actually don't read a ton of non-fiction for pleasure. If I do they tend to be kid's books... I like the pictures and the more accessible way they go about teaching. Also I think they're funny. (I worked for six years at a children's library and now I work at a school, and a big chunk of my job is sorting the library. So I blame all that.)

Though I am reading a delightful non-fiction book right now all about the rise of Anonymous.

My favorites are fiction, mostly fantasy. Neil Gaiman and Holly Black are my favorite writers. My favorite books are American Gods by Neil Gaiman, Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett, and Valiant by Holly Black. I'm also a big fan of a writer named Brom who does great artwork along with his books, some of which seem like twisted children's books. I also read a ton of graphic novels. Minx and Dark Horse are my favorite graphic novel publishers.

As for where I learned it all, it's a big variety of sources. I'm still learning in fact! I was always interested in history. I was one of those "dino kids" growing up (ask me anything about dinosaurs; anything! I'm not kidding), but my interest slowly shifted to humans.

I never much cared for history classes in school. I got great marks, but that was mostly for lack of anything better to do. I found the classes boring and repetitive. But I went to school online (long story) so I had a lot of free time to research things in history that I liked better.

I just pick things up as I go along, really. It's mostly research binges. I find someone or something I like and I read about them until I can't find another scrap of information. Then I rant!

For me, Wikipedia is usually a good jumping-off point. A nice overview and some source links to lead me on to more info. I also all but live in my library.

Thanks for asking! Sorry it turned into a whole lotta' blah blah.
