The sand was fine and black and gritted between her toes. She didn't understand why there were so many warning signs along the roads to this beach; the horizon was beautiful, fine and spotlessly blue. The waves lapping at the shoreline were frothy and sweet, not even reaching her bare feet.

He ached and burned all over, and she fussed over him. She did it as naturally as if she’d been doing it since day one. She’d pulled his shirt over his head, wincing along with him when the blood made it stick, and cleaned him up, gently dabbing warm water over his skin. He calmed immeasurably under her gentle hands and even felt his eyes begin to get heavy, the lack of sleep finally getting to him. Then she prodded a particularly tender spot on his left shoulder and he hissed awake, blinking narrowly at her.

A/N: A character introduction for something paying no rent in my head.

The waters were black and pitching. The only light came from the moon as it reflected off his blade, the point of it centered beneath the chin of a defiant female creature, blue eyes blazing and fearless. A thick plait joined the shadows at her back, hair pulled back from her face to reveal arched cheekbones and black kohl around her eyes, only adding credence to the legend that went before her everywhere she went.
