‏Today's vetted fundraisers

Sarah, the mother of a child named Amir, shares his story. Amir was born with a lack of oxygen, which caused muscle weakness and a deficiency of white matter in his brain. Due to this condition, Amir cannot move any part of his body, requires a special diet of ground food because of weak jaw muscles, and needs special medication. The family currently lives in Deir al-Balah after being displaced from Rafah.

The war in Gaza has reversed Amir's progress in physical therapy. Due to the lack of medicine, therapy, and worsening living conditions, he can no longer walk. His family's repeated displacements and the harsh environment have further harmed his health.

there's a lot to be said about how the average person indulges in delusions far more than anyone is really comfortable grappling with. every now and again, a poll comes out that reveals some sort of number of people who believe they have magical powers, usually pretty high, and everyone takes turns making fun of it and affirming their own Sanity

this is more observational than scientific, but it really does seem like writing off delusional thinking as the realm of the "insane" creates this valley where the "normal" person's thinking (especially a person who considers themself normal, but that's a whole other kettle of fish) must be more empirical, because, categorically, they are not insane

I betray a bit of a tendency towards criticising pop-psychiatry here, but I really don't think it's entirely fair to treat "hallucinations" and "delusions" as these incomprehensible eldritch states of the Other when the most stable person you know is a few nights of bad sleep and one day of unreturned phonecalls away from saying something that would qualify them for a pretty severe diagnosis

most people won't admit to having any kind of hallucination at all for fear of being locked up and yet the occasional weird fucking nighttime ones that you know aren't real are, to my knowledge, one of the most common and universal human experiences

there's an interesting thing I've noticed pretty often when someone first makes friends with schizophrenic people, which is that they undergo this period where they get anxious about whether or not they're a little schizophrenic (I'm guilty of doing this too) before either shutting down entirely or becoming more open to engaging with their own internal concept of sanity

it's so universal that it really brings into sharp focus just how much effort social norms encourage in rejecting everything that could make you seem even a little bit similar to groups that have been written off as morally defective, which makes them seem even more alien and incomprehensible in turn

you're only really allowed to acknowledge these experiences if you're making jokes about them, which I think is a big reason why shadow people and sleep paralysis demons are such an enduring topic of memes. you're only allowed to acknowledge you experience distressing sensory phenomena when it's part of a socially affirming in-joke

The vast majority of mental illness symptoms are completely typical functions and behaviours, but occurring frequently or severely enough to become a problem. They're not some Unique Thing Only Those Insane People Have.

yes I am always saying that.

mental illnesses are almost always "you do something that everyone does, but REALLY BAD or REALLY OFTEN"

like, ADHD: Basically every ADHD symptom is something that everyone does. fidgeting? having trouble focusing? getting distracted? hyperfocusing? time blindness?

Everyone does those from time to time and for one reason or another. We call it ADHD when you do it so much that it causes you problems, and it can't easily be fixed by things like "drink less coffee" or "get rid of distractions".

And the same goes for delusions and hallucinations. Everybody can get them, it's not a fundamentally different thing that only People With Delusion/Hallucination Disease get.

[ID: What you don’t know until you carry a tomato seedling through the airport and onto a plane is that carrying a tomato seedling through the airport and onto a plane will make people smile at you almost like you’re carrying a baby. A quiet baby. I did not know this until today, carrying my little tomato, about three or four inches high in its four-inch plastic starter pot, which my friend Michael gave to me, smirking about how I was going to get it home. Something about this, at first, felt naughty—not comparing a tomato to a baby, but carrying the tomato onto the plane—and so I slid the thing into my bag while going through security, which made them pull the bag for inspection. When the security guy saw it was a tomato he smiled and said, “I don’t know how to check that. Have a good day.” But I quickly realized that one of its stems (which I almost wrote as “arms”) was broken from the jostling, and it only had four of them, so I decided I better just carry it out in the open. And the shower of love began.

It was a shower of love I also felt while carrying a bouquet of lilies through the streets of Rome last summer. People, maybe women especially, maybe women my age-ish and older especially, smiling with approval. A woman in a housedress beating out a rug on a balcony shouted Bravo! An older couple holding hands both smiled at me and pulled into each other, knitting their fingers together.[…]

And the flight attendant asked about the tomato at least five times, not an exaggeration, every time calling it “my tomato”—Where’s my tomato? How’s my tomato? You didn’t lose my tomato, did you? She even directed me to an open seat in the exit row: Why don’t you guys go sit there and stretch out? I gathered my things and set the li’l guy in the window seat so she could look out. When I got my water I poured some into the li’l guy’s soil. When we got bumpy I put my hand on the li’l guy’s container, careful not to snap another arm off. And when we landed, and the pilot put the brakes on hard, my arm reflexively went across the seat, holding the li’l guy in place, the way my dad’s arm would when he had to brake hard in that car without seatbelts to speak of, in one of my very favorite gestures in the encyclopedia of human gestures. /end ID]

Dudes healthcare is so fake. My ADHD meds are $940 without insurance. But they gave me a website of "coupons" which straight up looks like a scam website, and I got it today for $60! Just a coupon from a random website and it was $900 cheaper. America, I am confusion!! America explain!!

For all my uninsured judys out there it's for Walgreens only: walgreens.rxsense.com

as a pharmacy technician i can share with you some websites that give you those "coupons" for your meds!

goodrx is the most well known one, but if i'm trying to find the cheapest price for a patient i compare it to scriptcycle, and use whichever is offering the best price. you just type in the medication (PLEASE make sure you're getting the right drug, dosage, and quantity) and your zip code and they will spit out some offers for you

some pharmacies may have their own discount card to compare to as well!

if you are getting a name brand medication, you can also look at the manufacturer's website to see if they offer any evouchers for you to use too

good luck out there 👍

Excerpt from "Original Plumbing" publication for and by transmasculine people:

"In San Fransisco overall we have great access to hormones and primary care. Most guys aren't in SF, so some of their main health concerns may be access to competent primary care and getting on T. I really do think a primary issue for us is mental health, and I see access to hormones and surgery as mental health issues because you can feel so crazy when you need those things and can't get them. Then there is the isolation a lot of us feel and body image stuff, depression, anxiety, and a lack of family support. Also harassment when you aren't passing and you're living somewhere not all that hip to the queers, the harassment on a daily basis can sure give you mental health issues if you didn't have them already! I say that from experience. Poverty and lack of access to jobs and education and housing prevent a lot of trans guys from being able to be healthy, too, and of course those issues disproportionately impact trans people of color."

Image 1: Pixel art of a person in a white shirt with long green hair and black over-the-ear headphones pointing at the viewer. The caption reads, "Autistics? Are you aware?"

Image 2: With an open smile, the person gestures upwards to a graphic with an open smile. The graphic is seven gray ovals with black text inside, encircling a dark gray circle captioned, "Autism spectrum Disorder". The text within the the ovals:

  1. Motor dysfunction, connective tissue and movement disorders
  2. Seizure disorders and epilepsy
  3. Sensory dysfunction and pain reactivity
  4. GI impairment: Inflammation; small intestine bacteria overgrowth; celiac and non-celiac gluten sensitivity; food intolerances; digestive insufficiencies
  5. HPA dysfunction and abnormal stress response
  6. Immune impairment: Neuroinflammation; allergic disease; auto-immunity; infection
  7. Metabolic disorders: Methylation issues; sulfation and detoxification issues; inborn metabolic disorders; mitochondrial dysfunction; oxidative stress

Beneath the graphic is text next to the person, as if they were speaking. "I've seen a lot of good comics about mental health and autism and the social issues with autism," it reads, "but I'm worried that haven't seen anyone talk about this... Autism is associated with a range of physical conditions as well! Honestly... I'm asking if you are aware because I wasn't..."

Image 3: The person points at themselves. The text reads, "I, uh! Actually had no idea. I neglected to my physical health for decades. I didn't realize, but I was having seizures nearly daily. Seizures can often look very different from how people would guess..."

Image 4: The person, drawn without colour, is lying down on their back, crying and shaking. The caption reads, "I worry that people don't know what seizures look like. My whole life I'd have these random shivers, but no one ever really thought anything of it. A pretty normal sign of a seizure, but they were only once or twice a week. However, I was actually having seizures daily! But it didn't look like that at all -v-."

Image 5: The top half of the image shows the person, still without colour, staring blankly into space. The caption reads, "I'd just space out? Or that's what I assumed it was my whole life, since that's what everyone told me I was doing! It never hurt so I didn't want to complain, but these were actually Absence Seizures. They're my lease favourite because people just think I'm ignoring them :( also I look dumb."

The bottom half of the image shows the person giving a thumbs up with a wide open smile. The caption reads, "I never though to even look up seizures or talk about it with a doctor because it all seemed so normal! And no one told me I was at risk."

Image 6: The caption reads, "Ignoring your health has consequences. Such as feeling suddnely extremely strange in the middle of a cool EDM concert and waking up on the floor, then the medical tent, then the ER -v-." Underneath the text, the person is shown lying down. They have bags under their eyes. Their arms are spread out. Their headphones and phone are on the floor as well. There is a fallen energy drink spilling liquid near their head.

Image 7: The caption reads, "When I went to the doctor, I was hit with, "Uhm, yeah it makes sense you have seizures with this Aspergers diagnosis."

Beneath the text, the person, back in colour with their head phones on, is shaking and pressing the the fingertips of their index finger together. Their eyes are closed. They look tired. "I guess that would have been nice to know before the brain damage and flunking high school," they say.

A hamster standing upright with a nurse's hat and red barrette and holding a clipboard and a pen says, "You wouldn't have been able to understand it because you're autistic! :)"

"Oh," the person replies "Okay cool I guess."

Image 8: The caption reads, "It makes me really worried when I see my autistic peers have these issues too but don't know they might link to autism.. And I don't think allistics are aware of this in the slightest either. Did you know?"

Beneath the caption is the same image from image 3. "I've also always suffered from a low immune system, GI issues and constant infections," the text beside them reads.

Image 9: The caption reads, "If you have an autistic friend, please be aware they might have medical needs. Be transparent about your vaccine status, don't keep your illnesses secret, explain the physical strain of activities you want to bring them on. If you're autistic, be your biggest health advocate. Be aware of your body and your disability. And even when you are told you are confused or over exagerrating, ask for tests if you think you need them."

The image beneath the caption is the same image from image 1, except their eyes are closed. The text beside them reads, "Okay, thank you!"
