so when straight people ask me why I say I’m “queer” or “gay” instead of sharing my actual identity as a panromantic demisexual non-binary sapphic queer I just tell them “ok look, when you’re talking to someone who isn’t local and they ask you where you’re from and you either say the name of the largest city nearby or ‘town name, suburb of large nearby city’ so they can get some geographical context of where you’re located right, bc they’re probably not going to know the name of the little town you actually live in.”

but if you’re talking to a local you can say the name of your actual town bc they have a greater chance of knowing where/what that is.

ok well when I’m talking to a straight person I start with queer bc chances are they aren’t as familiar with the context of all the little towns in that big queer city and need gps (gay positioning system) to find me.

if I’m talking to another queer person and I say I live in a suburb of gay city in a town called panromantic on the demisexual side of the tracks which is in the county of queer and I live off the intersection of non-binary and sapphic, they’d probably be able to find me with little to no problems, make sense?

the types of media i like can be placed in one of two categories:

type 1: oh my god this thing is amazing, i love it, i could go on hours long rants about how well executed it was. it has its faults but overall it's excellent.

type 2: i didn't say it was good, i said i liked it

to be honest there has never been a fictional character i’ve actually wanted to date. like. i want them to date each other. i don’t want myself as a person to be involved in this scenario whatsoever. what would i add to this narratively? what’s my thematic purpose in the narrative? immersion breaking.

Me: That “ooh squirrel!” stereotype with ADD and ADHD is offensive and undermines all of the actual struggles that come along with the disorder

Also me: *sees any kind of animal in the middle of any conversation* HOLY SHIT

It’s about prioritization of urgency!!! The conversation stays in front of me but the animal will walk away in a minute! You won’t get to see it if I don’t say something NOW!!!

Say what you will about magical shapeshifters being a lazy plot device, but I Have literally never seen an actor doing the “me pretending to be this other person pretending to be me” bit who wasn’t clearly having a great time.

more disabled mad scientists. you’re telling me that this bitch follows perfect lab safety and has never injured themself? are you sure? no brilliant flash of eureka and then realizing that actually that was just a normal kind of flash and now they are blind? they never experimented on themself? they put on that psychic helm and it didn’t give them brain trauma the first time? i want the wizard who invented the fireball spell to have also invented prosthetic hands

there's a difference between a bad episode of star trek, a bad episode of star trek and a bad episode of star trek

there's times when they hilariously overlap in a venn diagram (a few come to mind) but to clarify:

1. bad episode of star trek: it's so bad, it becomes funny and a work of art. (NOT including purposefully funny episodes)

2. bad episode of star trek: the structure of the episode and general execution is so sloppy that its just really fucking boring. often also narratively confused.

3. bad episode of star trek: this ones just not okay, folks

I refuse to make things that are “too pretty to be used.” If I make you something, it’s because I want you to use it! The worst thing you could do to me is say “oh this blanket/scarf/hat you made me is too pretty to use, I’m gonna fold it up and look at it and never ever touch it again.” No!!! I made that to be be used and touched and cuddled and snuggled and, yes, worn out!! I want you to use it so much it falls apart!! It’s like I went to give you a hug and you were like “Ooh, thanks! Go sit on that shelf so I can look at your outstretched arms forever!” No!!! Hug the thing I made for you to hug!!!

tumblr is a website where you can see posts like “gender roles are a social construct and they’re not real” and “the stock market is just astrology for men” followed by “he is my boy girlfriend” reblogged by the same person in a span of two minutes. like how do you not see the irony of it all

OP it’s actually very simple. gender isn’t real except for when it’s funny.

One thing Murderbot Diaries does that i really like (and would like to see more of) is demonstrating the differences and interplay between digital communications and talking face to face. It’s interesting because it feels like the way me and my friends use messaging apps today (ie flicking a message to someone across the room, and responding by swearing at them outloud), and because its used to show a lot about Murderbot’s (and ART’s) character.

To start off there’s about three ways people communicate in murderbot diaries, face to face, comms (which seem to be audio comms) and the feed. The feed being a general purpose internet with brain access, because hell yeah.  (which for the purposes of this discussion is probably most close to the way i use messaging apps)

One particularly great exchange that shows the difference between the modes of communications is Mensah shutting down Murderbots attempt to hack the gunship during Exit Strategy, which switches from the feed for reasons of privacy and comfort to Mensah gripping it’s jacket and saying “No”. There’s an additional layer of urgency from communicating physically, where Murderbot can’t ignore it.

In Home the weapons request forms are the same as my friend sending me shitty memes and cursed food pictures while im in a meeting. In Network Effect Murderbot uses and stops using some of the modes of communication with ART, to express how hurt it is while still using others.

The internet has opened up new opportunities for the way people communicate, and I just think the way that the Murderbot Diaires uses it is Neat. (insert marge simpsons meme here)

(This has been sitting in my drafts since some point last year and while i edited it a little, i havent updated it for Fugitive Telemetry which has some really interesting stuff about bot language. @grammarpedant has written some cool meta about that though)

on one level, supernatural is a bad tv show. on another level, it is the best soap opera ever made. on a third, different level, it is an intricate tragicomedy about generational trauma. and on a fourth level, it is a true story in which the characters are real people actively affecting the plot. i could keep going. the media experience of all time.
