WIP Intro: Below These Wicked Waves

A sapphic retelling of The Little Mermaid
“What the fuck is that?” demands Khris.
“A tsunami?” suggests Tephen.
“A storm?” inquires Stewart.
Worse, I think, grinning. It’s her.

Category/Genre: Young Adult Fantasy Romance (15+)

Status: Outlining (*This is a side WIP; most of my writing time is going towards my main project*)

Project Type: Stand alone

Writing style: First person, present tense (Dual POV)

Tropes: Arranged marriage, "touch-her-and-I'll-kill-you", mermaids, HEA (Sorry, Hans Christian Andersen), villain pov, slow burn romance, morally grey characters

Synopsis: Echo, the youngest daughter of King Aquarius has been betrothed to the Sea Witch: a terrifying necromancer with tentacles in place of a mermaid tail. As an engagement gift, Echo is offered the opportunity to dance on land — temporarily exchanging her tail for legs to fulfil her childhood dream.

Yet all spells come at a cost; on land, mermaids cannot speak and must return to the sea before the next moon phase, unless they wish to forget their merfolk lives forever.

After an argument with her fiancée, Echo uses the spell alone and ends up trapped on land, having forgotten the reversal spell. Now in the hands of a freak-show owner, a man who believes Echo is the key to his dying company's future, she must fight to find her way home or risk losing more than her memories.

...the media’s coverage of these new kinds of prosthetics is so focused on the initial joy or incredulity — on the idea that “lives are changed” — that they forget to ask if these hands are actually useful and what happens in the weeks and months after the unboxing.
The media narrative, says James Young — husband of Ashley and a cyborg himself — is designed to be reassuring to people: If you happen to, God forbid, lose your arm, “they” can replace it. “People want to make sure that the technology is out there that can remake you as you are right now,” he says.
For Alexis Hillard, the creator of the YouTube channel “Stump Kitchen,” the obsession with cyborgs is “continuing to drive that wedge between disenfranchised disabled people and those with money and power, creating a new ‘desirable disabled person.’”

A good read for our followers writing amputee characters in contemporary or speculative fiction settings.

As always, take this not as a message to "stop writing cyborgs/advanced prosthetics ever," but rather to read and center disabled perspectives, understand your motivations, and trace your logic.

When the death toll for Gaza goes up from disease, Israel will claim deniability, that those deaths were not deliberate and calculated. You see it with how settlers will talk about the genocide of Natives, that most of us "just died from disease then colonizers 'accidentally spread'". It is NEVER an accident. Famines and Diseases and always used as tool for genocide by colonizers
